NEET SS 2027 is a computer-based test (CBT) conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) for admission to DM, MCh, and DrNB super-speciality courses across India. The exam lasts 2 hours 30 minutes and comprises 150 multiple-choice questions carrying 600 marks in total. NBEMS has not yet released the official 2027 notification; the pattern below is based on the stable structure established from 2024 onwards and is expected to continue unchanged.

NEET SS 2027 follows the three-section, strictly time-bound CBT format that NBEMS introduced in 2024. The exam is designed for postgraduate doctors (MD/MS/DNB holders) seeking admission to DM, MCh, and DrNB super-speciality programmes. Each section is locked after its 50-minute window ends — you cannot revisit a completed section or carry over unused time.

NEET SS 2027: Detailed Exam Pattern

The NEET SS 2027 question paper has 150 single-correct MCQs divided across three strictly timed sections. Section A tests basic science knowledge from your feeder broad speciality; Section B tests clinical knowledge of the feeder speciality at PG exit level; Section C is specific to the super-speciality course you applied for. NBEMS automatically moves you to the next section after each 50-minute block — completed sections cannot be reopened.

Note: The question paper you receive depends on the super-speciality group selected during the application. Each group has a unique paper tailored to that speciality’s feeder and super-speciality subjects. The official information brochure confirms the precise topic distribution across sections.

Important: You cannot proceed to the next section until the current section’s 50 minutes are over — plan your time carefully within each section.

NEET SS Marking Scheme 2027

NEET SS 2027 uses a uniform +4/-1 marking scheme across all three sections. There is no differential marking — all 150 questions carry the same weight. The negative marking of 1 mark per wrong answer applies to every MCQ regardless of the section it belongs to.

Unlike some postgraduate medical entrance exams, NEET SS has no numerical type or multi-select questions. The entire paper is single-correct MCQs, so there is no scenario where negative marking is waived for a question type. Each wrong attempt costs 5 marks in net effect (you forgo +4 and lose 1 additional mark).

NEET SS Subject-Wise Exam Pattern 2027

NEET SS covers multiple super-speciality groups, and the question paper differs by the group you choose at the time of applying. Every group follows the same three-section structure (50 questions × 50 minutes per section), but the subjects tested in each section are tailored to that group’s feeder speciality and super-speciality course. Medical Group

Feeder speciality: General Medicine / Paediatrics. Section A and B cover General Medicine at basic and clinical PG-exit level. Section C tests the specific DM course applied for.

Surgical Group

Feeder speciality: General Surgery. Section A and B cover General Surgery fundamentals and clinical topics at PG-exit level. Section C is specific to the MCh course applied for.

NEET SS Question Types 2027

All 150 questions in NEET SS 2027 are single-correct MCQs with four options. NBEMS does not include numerical/integer type, multi-select, assertion-reason, or descriptive questions. You answer each question by clicking one option using the mouse on the CBT interface. Clinical vignette-style questions — where a patient scenario is described — are common in Sections B and C, but they are still answered as standard single-correct MCQs.

Clinical vignette MCQs present a patient scenario and ask you to identify a diagnosis, investigation, or management step. The answer is still a single selection from four options — the vignette format does not change the marking or attempt rules.

NEET SS Exam Pattern: Changes in 2027 vs Previous Year

NBEMS has made no announcements about changes to the NEET SS 2027 exam pattern as of August 2026. The pattern is expected to remain stable from the 2024-onwards structure. The last major structural change was the introduction of three time-bound sections in 2024, followed by the addition of dedicated paper groups for Medical Oncology and Critical Care Medicine in 2025. Both of these continue into 2026 and are expected to continue in 2027.

How to Prepare Based on NEET SS Exam Pattern

The three-section, time-locked structure of NEET SS 2027 demands section-specific strategies. You cannot borrow time from Section A to finish Section C. Build your preparation around the 50-minute block rule and the layered difficulty across sections.

1. Strengthen feeder speciality basics first. Section A tests basic sciences from your feeder speciality — Pathology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Microbiology, Anatomy, Biochemistry. These are often underestimated. A strong Section A score (40+ out of 50) gives you a buffer before Section C’s harder super-speciality questions.
2. Drill 50-question timed blocks regularly. Practice attempting exactly 50 questions in 50 minutes to internalise the pace of about 1 minute per question. Use a stopwatch and simulate exam conditions — you must stop when the 50 minutes end, regardless of where you are in the mock set.
3. Build clinical vignette fluency for Sections B and C. NEET SS relies heavily on patient scenario questions. Practice reading a clinical vignette and extracting the key diagnostic clue within 30–45 seconds. Speed here determines how many Section C questions you finish within the time limit.
4. Go deep into your chosen super-speciality for Section C. Section C is the differentiator — it is entirely based on the DM/MCh/DrNB course you applied for. Invest the largest share of your preparation time here. Use subspecialty textbooks and recent journal updates relevant to your chosen course.
5. Apply the negative marking filter strictly. With 1 mark deducted per wrong answer, each wrong attempt costs you a net 5 marks (forfeiting +4 and losing 1 extra). Leave a question blank if your confidence in an answer is below 60%; this strategy protects your score in Section C where questions are the hardest.
6. Solve previous year NEET SS question papers. PYQs from 2020 onwards reveal recurring clinical scenarios, high-yield pharmacology topics, and the level of super-speciality depth tested in Section C. Pattern familiarity also reduces the time you spend reading each question during the actual exam.
7. Revise selectively in the two weeks before the exam. Focus your final revision on the 20% of topics that appear most frequently in PYQs — typically core clinical medicine, key surgical indications, and super-speciality-specific management guidelines. Avoid starting new topics in the final week.
