The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education follows a semester-based system for Class 12. The WBCHSE Exam Pattern 2027 varies as per the subject selected. Most subjects in the WBCHSE Exam Pattern 2027 carry a total of 100 marks. The total marks are split across semesters and divided into theory components (70 or 80) and practical or project components (20 or 30), depending on the specific subject. In the WBCHSE Board Exam pattern, 50% of the questions will be MCQ-based, and the other 50% will be short answer and application-based.

Students have to select three Compulsory Elective subjects & one Optional Elective subject from any one of the Sets of the subjects;

  • SET 1: Science Stream
  • SET 2: Commerce Stream
  • SET 3: Arts (Humanities) Stream

Based on WBCHSE Exam previous year trends, Calculus holds the highest weightage (approx. 36 marks) in Mathematics. Vectors and 3D Geometry (around 20 marks) also carry high weightage for long answers.

Electrostatics (8 marks), Current Electricity, and Optics (14 marks) dominate the Physics section.

In Chemistry, p-Block Elements and Chemical Kinetics can carry 7-8 marks each. Genetics and Evolution (18–20 marks) has the highest weightage in Biology, followed by Reproduction (14-15 marks) and Biology & Human Welfare (10-12 marks).

If you are a commerce student, Accounting for Partnership Firms holds the highest weightage of around 40 marks. In Business Studies, focus areas usually include Nature & Significance of Management, Principles of Management, and Business Environment (10-15 marks each).

What is the West Bengal HS Exam Pattern 2027?

  • West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) started the semester-based system from 2024–2025 for Class 11, extending fully into Class 12 for the 2025–2026 academic year.
  • The West Bengal HS Exam Pattern 2027 will have 50% of the questions as MCQs, and the others will be application-based.
Class Semester Question Type Paper Format
Class 11 Semester 1 50% MCQs (objective) OMR-based paper
Semester 2 Short Answer + Descriptive Written paper
Class 12 Semester 3 50% MCQs (objective) OMR-based paper (S-shaped seating)
Semester 4 Short Answer + Long/Descriptive Full board-style written paper

The WBCHSE shifted from a single annual final exam format (active since 1978) to a modern semester-based evaluation system. Before 2024, the exam was conducted in a single comprehensive annual board examination held at the end of Class 12. In 2024–2025, the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education announced the split structure (4 Semesters). Since then, Class 12 students are assessed across four distinct semesters split over Classes 11 and 12.

  • The only exception is Music and Visual Arts, with 50 marks in Theory, which is divided into 20 MCQs and 30 short answers.
  • If you select first language as English (ENGA), you will have the option of selecting Bengali (BNGB) or Hindi (HINB) or Alternative English (ALTE) or Nepali (NEPB) as second language and vice versa.
  • Students who opt for the Vocational subject cannot opt for Physical Education (PHED)/ Music (MUSC)/ Visual Arts (VISA)/ Economics (ECON) as an elective subject.
