Technical University Ilmenau Admission 2027
Technical University Ilmenau runs Winter (October) and Summer (April) intakes for master programmes, and a single Winter intake for bachelor programmes. All 2027-cycle applications for non-EU candidates are processed through uni-assist rather than the older direct portal.
Technical University Ilmenau Application Deadlines for Indian Applicants 2027
Deadlines vary sharply by degree level and intake. Indian applicants should also budget four to six weeks for APS certificate issuance in New Delhi before submitting.
| Milestone | Date | Notes for Indian Applicants |
|---|---|---|
| Master Summer 2027 application window | 1 August 2026 to 15 November 2026 | Applies to all English-taught master’s tracks accepting a Summer start |
| Master Winter 2027/28 application window | 16 January 2027 to 15 May 2027 | Primary intake for most Indian master applicants |
| Bachelor Winter 2027/28 application window | 16 January 2027 to 15 July 2027 | German B1 certificate required at application; C1 for enrolment |
| APS certificate lead time | Start 6 to 8 weeks before deadline | Mandatory for all Indian applicants; issued by the German embassy in New Delhi |
| Programme start | April 2027 (Summer) or October 2027 (Winter) | Orientation week runs one week before formal classes begin |
Planning note: Book the APS interview slot at the German embassy before you finalise the uni-assist application. APS delays are the single most common reason Indian offers are rescinded because the certificate must reach uni-assist before the university’s deadline, not just be applied for.

Technical University Ilmenau Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Requirements at Technical University Ilmenau are set at the programme level, with a single set of baseline academic and language conditions all Indian applicants must clear.
Technical University Ilmenau PG Requirements for Indian Applicants
- Academic: Recognised 4-year bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline with 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 (recommended); 3-year bachelors accepted only with an additional bridging qualification
- English: B2 CEFR minimum, evidenced by IELTS with Reading 24, Listening 22, Speaking 25, Writing 24, or TOEFL iBT with Reading 4, Listening 4, Speaking 4, Writing 4 (1-6 band scale, effective 21 January 2026); certificate must be issued within the past two years
- APS certificate: Original APS document from the German embassy in New Delhi, mandatory for all Indian applicants
- German B2 required for programmes taught in German, plus C1 for direct enrolment
Technical University Ilmenau UG Requirements for Indian Applicants
- Academic: Class 12 with 60% (recommended); no fixed grade cutoff, but subject prerequisites apply for STEM programmes
- Language: German B1 for application, C1 for direct admission; all bachelor programmes are German-medium
- APS certificate: Same requirement as PG applicants
Note: The IELTS or TOEFL certificate is waived if your bachelor’s degree was taught fully in English and English is the official medium in your prior institution. Indian applicants from English-medium engineering colleges can invoke this waiver by submitting a medium-of-instruction letter with the application.
Technical University Ilmenau Acceptance Rate 2027
Technical University Ilmenau does not officially publish an aggregate acceptance rate. Based on programme capacity and application-volume patterns, competitive English-taught masters admit an estimated 30-40% (estimated) of applicants, while bachelor programmes operate under open admission with no fixed grade cutoff.
The Data Science and Biomedical Engineering by Research masters, both launched in Summer 2026, are the most competitive because seats are capped and applications outrun capacity. Older tracks like Micro- and Nanotechnologies typically clear applications where the academic and language floor is met.
Reality check: The acceptance rate at Technical University Ilmenau is closer to a threshold check than a percentile funnel. If you meet the 60% bachelor’s benchmark, IELTS floor and APS timeline, your offer probability is materially higher than the raw rate suggests.

Technical University Ilmenau Campus, Facilities and Student Life
Technical University Ilmenau sits on a compact single campus in the town of Ilmenau, a 40-minute train ride south of Erfurt, the Thuringian capital.
- Location and transport: Campus is a 10-minute walk from the town centre; the semester contribution includes the state-wide Thoska transport pass covering trains across Thuringia
- Housing: Studentenwerk Thüringen offers dorm places to roughly 40% of incoming international students, allocated first-come-first-served after confirmation of enrolment
- Facilities: Central Humboldtbau building houses the Faraday clean-room, a modern makerspace, and the Fraunhofer IDMT audio-lab affiliation for media programmes
- Indian community: Active Indian Students Association organising Diwali and Holi events; roughly 350 Indian students currently enrolled across master programmes
What Indian students say: The small-town setting means rent stays low and lab access is easy compared to Berlin or Munich. Weekend social life is limited to the campus bar and student clubs, and most first-years travel to Erfurt or Weimar for a wider night-out scene.

[Source: QS Quacquarelli Symonds, Times Higher Education, US News, ShanghaiRanking, Collegedunia Study Abroad]
THE 2026 subject rankings place Technical University Ilmenau in the #601-800 band for both Computer Science and Engineering, and #801-1000 for Physical Sciences. Collegedunia Study Abroad also ranks the university #56 of 80 in Germany for 2026.
Key insight: Technical University Ilmenau’s world-rank position is not the buy signal for Indian applicants. The subject-level standing in Engineering and Computer Science, plus recognition by the German university list for post-study work visas, matters more than the global tables for employability outcomes.
Technical University Ilmenau Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
Technical University Ilmenau does not publish a centralised placement report, and career outcomes are tracked through the Career Service and Fraunhofer research partnerships rather than a formal placement cell.
- Median starting salary in Germany (STEM master): € 48,000 (₹ 52.8 Lakh) per year (market median; source: Federal Employment Agency salary atlas)
- Typical recruiter sectors: Automotive engineering, semiconductor and microelectronics, telecom equipment, media technology, industrial research institutes
- Named research partners: Fraunhofer IDMT, Fraunhofer IIS, Bosch, Siemens, ZF Group, Deutsche Telekom (partnership disclosures, not confirmed placement figures)
- Post-study work visa: 18-month job-seeker visa available to all master graduates; Blue Card issued at annual salary of € 45,300 (₹ 49.83 Lakh) or higher
- Career support: On-campus Career Service runs the annual inova industry fair each May, bringing in 130+ recruiters from Thuringia and Bavaria
Insider note: Indian graduates of Technical University Ilmenau typically job-search inside Thuringia and Bavaria first because Fraunhofer and Bosch have research plants within a 2-hour train ride. Language matters: a working B2 German raises interview conversion by a wide margin, even for English-medium engineering roles.
Technical University Ilmenau vs Peer Universities
Indian applicants comparing Technical University Ilmenau usually weigh it against other public technical universities in Germany with a similar STEM focus and low-cost profile.
| University | QS World 2027 | Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 | Avg PG Semester Contribution | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Technical University Ilmenau | Not ranked | #499 | € 271 (₹ 29,854) | Cheapest cost of living among German technical universities |
| TU Dresden | #284 | Verify at CD profile | € 288 (₹ 31,680) | TU9 member with broader English-taught catalogue |
| TU Chemnitz | Not ranked | Verify at CD profile | € 267 (₹ 29,370) | Larger Indian student community in Saxony |
| TU Braunschweig | #651-700 | Verify at CD profile | € 340 (₹ 37,400) | Automotive research strength; Volkswagen recruiting pipeline |
| RWTH Aachen | #99 | Verify at CD profile | € 320 (₹ 35,200) | Elite research status; harder admission, larger cohort |
[Source: QS Quacquarelli Symonds, Collegedunia Study Abroad, respective university websites]
Technical University Ilmenau stands out on total cost-of-attendance rather than headline rank. A two-year master closes at roughly ₹ 26 Lakh all-in against ₹ 32 Lakh to ₹ 35 Lakh for the same degree in Dresden or Aachen, without a tuition tradeoff because none of these institutions charge tuition.
Technical University Ilmenau is the right fit for Indian applicants who want a focused STEM master in Germany at the lowest total cost, and who are willing to trade a big-city campus for lab access, small class sizes and a straightforward admission bar. Total spend of roughly ₹ 14 Lakh per year against a market median starting salary of ₹ 52.8 Lakh gives one of the strongest ROI positions among mid-tier German technical universities, backed by the standard 18-month post-study job-seeker visa for universities in Germany.
It is not the right pick if you need a top-100 world brand for employer signaling in India, or if you plan to skip German entirely; RWTH Aachen or TU Munich fit the first profile, and English-medium tracks at TU Munich cover the second better than Ilmenau’s smaller English catalogue.

Ques. How does the APS certificate process work for TU Ilmenau applicants?
Ans. Indian applicants must obtain an APS certificate from the German embassy in New Delhi before submitting to uni-assist, and it is mandatory for both bachelor and master programmes. - English taught programmes are very less, so the choice of selection will be less for those who understand only English, Even though there are lots of programmes for study , job opportunity/research opportunity for some courses after graduation are not very shiny.
Overview
University experience in abroad was unique and I really enjoyed it , There are lots of opportunities to find your talent and nourish it.

- To be honest, I filtered some Universities for me and applied to all of them, I didn't receive replies from all but I got accepted at TUI which was also unbelievable for me as it was a Technical university and it has more importance in regards if one wants a career in Research.
- As I got an admission to the university, it was covid period. The classes were online. Still, teachers supported very well in all aspects, we used to have presentations, projects, research papers and reports. So, study was not compromised at all.
Dislikes
- I didn't find anything as such, that I did not like about Technical University of Ilmenau. Also, I am aware that students are concerned about Racism, but personally I never experienced such things. And still if any student does face it, then there are organizations in the university where it can be reported.
Overview
It was awesome as I learned a lot there. Especially living alone and managing everything. University went very well and I did participate in various events, exhibitions and parties too.
Campus Life
It was a campus with WiFi access, and also in the dorms. There used to be various events in which one can participate and volunteer.
