Otto von Guericke University admissions run on the German public university model, where applications from Indian students are pre-checked by the uni-assist e.V. platform before OVGU makes the offer decision. Bachelor’s applicants need a Class XII certificate plus at least one year of recognised undergraduate study in India, while master’s applicants need a four-year Bachelor’s in a related field along with the mandatory APS certificate from the German Embassy in New Delhi.
- Next live deadline: Winter 2027/28 primary intake closes 15 July 2027, portal opens 15 April 2027
- Base tuition and fees: No tuition for most programs, only a semester contribution of €311.30 (₹33,997) per semester, and a uni-assist application fee of €75 (₹8,189) for the first course
- Eligibility floor: UG needs Class XII at 65 percent plus one year of Indian bachelor study, PG needs a four-year Bachelor’s around 65 to 70 percent, with IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 85 iBT for English-taught programs

Otto von Guericke University Application Deadlines for Indian Students
Otto von Guericke University runs two intakes: Winter Semester with an October start and Summer Semester with an April start. The Winter Semester is the primary intake, and most master’s and bachelor’s programs open only for Winter. Summer Semester carries a limited subset of programs, mostly in economics and management. Deadlines below are taken per the official OVGU uni-assist page.
Otto von Guericke University’s primary intake for Indian students is Winter Semester, since most STEM master’s programs open only in Winter.

Program-specific deadlines apply for certain master’s tracks, so verify the individual program page before uploading documents. The uni-assist opening date shown is OVGU’s published start, not a separate uni-assist calendar figure.
Otto von Guericke University Eligibility for Indian Applicants
OVGU is an access oriented public research university, which means it admits most applicants who meet its stated academic thresholds and language cut-offs. Indian applicants must clear three checks: academic equivalence at uni-assist, an APS certificate from the German Embassy in New Delhi, and the English or German language floor for the target program.
Otto von Guericke University Bachelor’s Eligibility
A Class XII pass alone from India does not equal a German Hochschulzugangsberechtigung. Indian applicants must show one year of recognised undergraduate study in India, or complete a one-year Studienkolleg (preparatory college) in Germany.
- UG general entry: Class XII at 65 percent or higher, plus one year of Indian Bachelor study in a related subject
- Studienkolleg route: completed only if Indian schooling does not meet HZB, needs German B2 plus an entrance test
- Language for German-taught UG: DSH-2, TestDaF 4 or Goethe C2
Otto von Guericke University Master’s Eligibility
Master’s programs need a first degree in a related subject that is equivalent to a German Bachelor’s, typically a four-year Indian Bachelor’s around 65 to 70 percent or a three-year Bachelor’s with a one-year add-on.
- Academic floor: Bachelor’s with 65 percent or higher in a directly related subject, verified via the Relevance of UG Studies form
- APS certificate: mandatory for all Indian applicants, obtained from the German Embassy in New Delhi before applying
- Subject prerequisites: STEM master’s need proof of specific credits in mathematics, programming or engineering, listed on each program page
Otto von Guericke University English and German Language Requirements
Language cut-offs are set per program. Most English-taught master’s programs at OVGU accept a B2 floor (IELTS 6.5), while a few technical tracks such as M.Sc. Digital Engineering ask for a C1 floor (IELTS 7.0).
| Test | B2 Minimum | C1 Minimum |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 | 7.0 |
| TOEFL iBT | 85 | 95 |
| PTE Academic | 70 | 76 |
| Cambridge English | FCE Grade A | CAE Grade B or C |
| TOEIC (all four sections) | Listening and Reading 865, Speaking 170, Writing 160 | Listening and Reading 945, Speaking 180, Writing 180 |
OVGU does not offer an IELTS waiver for Indian applicants. The published exemption list covers only school or university degrees completed in Australia, Canada (excluding Quebec and New Brunswick), the USA, Britain, Ireland or New Zealand, plus IB Language A or B HL. English medium instruction (MOI) letters from Indian universities are not accepted, so plan an IELTS or TOEFL test before applying.
Reality check: An Indian three-year B.Sc. or B.Com without a Master’s is often flagged as not equivalent to a German four-year Bachelor’s, so plan on either a completed four-year B.Tech or a one-year add-on qualification before the master’s application.
Otto von Guericke University PG Programs and English Score Requirements
Otto von Guericke University offers most master’s programs in the Winter intake, with English-taught tracks concentrated in engineering, computer science and business. Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Otto von Guericke University page for your chosen program before applying.
Otto von Guericke University UG Programs for Indian Students

Otto von Guericke University PhD Admissions
Otto von Guericke University admits doctoral candidates through two routes: an individual doctorate under a professor at one of the nine faculties, and structured doctoral programs run by graduate schools. Doctoral study is largely research based, and most students hold research assistant contracts that pay a monthly salary rather than a stipend.
Otto von Guericke University Individual Doctorate Route
Applicants must first find a supervising professor whose research aligns with the proposed topic. Once accepted, the candidate registers with the relevant faculty and applies for admission to doctoral study.
- Prerequisite: a completed Master’s degree (or four-year Bachelor’s plus master’s-equivalent qualification) in a related field
- Supervisor confirmation: written acceptance from a professor before registration
- Language: English is accepted in most STEM faculties, German may be needed in humanities
Otto von Guericke University Structured Doctoral Programs
Structured PhD programs run under graduate schools such as the Cognitive Sciences graduate school and the Faculty of Natural Sciences programs. These follow a fixed curriculum with coursework, seminars and a defended dissertation, usually over three to four years.
Planning note: PhD applications at OVGU do not run on the uni-assist calendar. Positions open through faculty listings across the year, so track the OVGU jobs page and individual chair websites rather than waiting for a semester deadline.
Otto von Guericke University Application Process via uni-assist
Indian applicants apply to Otto von Guericke University through uni-assist e.V., a central pre-check body used by most German public universities. uni-assist validates academic equivalence, checks documents, and forwards a Vorprüfungsdokumentation (VPD) to OVGU for the final admission decision. The steps below run in order from portal creation to final upload.
- Create an account on my.uni-assist.de once the OVGU cycle opens (15 October 2026 for Summer 2027, 15 April 2027 for Winter 2027/28)
- Select Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and choose your target program from the list
- Pay the application fee of €75 (around ₹8,189) for your first course on the my.uni-assist portal, then €30 (₹3,276) for each additional course in the same semester
- Upload your Class XII marksheet, Bachelor’s transcripts, degree certificates, English test scorecard, APS certificate and passport bio page
- Upload sworn German or English translations of any Indian documents that are not in English
- Track your application on the uni-assist dashboard and expect a VPD notice within four to six weeks
- Once uni-assist forwards the VPD, OVGU issues its admission decision through the myOVGU portal in three to five weeks
Applicants already holding a German Bachelor’s degree or those in a double-degree partnership can apply directly through the myOVGU portal and skip the uni-assist fee. Most Indian applicants coming from Indian universities cannot use this direct route.
Documents Required for Otto von Guericke University Admission
Otto von Guericke University follows the standard German document set, with two extra requirements for Indian applicants: the APS certificate and sworn translations of any documents not originally in English or German. Missing the APS certificate is the single most common reason Indian applications are rejected at uni-assist screening.
- Passport: bio page scan, valid for at least 18 months past the intended arrival date
- Class XII certificate and marksheet: original plus sworn English or German translation
- Bachelor’s degree certificate and consolidated marksheet: original plus translation
- APS certificate: mandatory, issued by the German Embassy in New Delhi after academic verification
- Relevance of UG Studies form: mandatory for Indian PG applicants, verifies subject fit with the target Master’s
- English test scorecard: IELTS TRF, TOEFL iBT report or PTE Academic report
- Statement of Purpose: 500 to 1,000 words, program-specific
- Curriculum vitae: European CV format, listing academics and any internships
- Letters of recommendation: one to two academic LORs, program-dependent
- Motivation letter or program-specific forms: as listed on each program page
- Passport-size photograph: recent, matching biometric passport standards
All Indian documents must be submitted as scanned copies during the online application, with certified hard copies posted separately to uni-assist if requested during processing.
Otto von Guericke University Acceptance Rate for Indian Students
Otto von Guericke University does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Based on competitive-intake program patterns and the mid-band public university profile, the overall admit rate is estimated at 30 to 40 percent for international master’s applicants who meet the stated eligibility thresholds. Rates for individual programs vary widely.
Otto von Guericke University Admit Rate by Program
Master’s programs in Digital Engineering and Data and Knowledge Engineering tend to run tighter than the institutional average because of small cohort sizes. M.Sc. Computer Science and M.Sc. Electrical Engineering carry larger cohorts and are usually more accessible for well-prepared Indian applicants with a four-year B.Tech background.
Otto von Guericke University Selectivity Compared with Peers
OVGU sits at a ranking band around QS World 646 and QS Germany 33 of 38, which puts it in the same competitive tier as other mid-range German public technical universities. Indian applicants with strong subject-specific credits, an IELTS score above the floor, and a clean APS certificate typically receive an offer within one to two months of uni-assist forwarding the VPD.
Insider note: Applicants who miss subject credits on the transcript but meet the CGPA cut-off are often waitlisted at OVGU rather than rejected outright. Add a course-mapping sheet with your SOP that lines up each Indian subject with the OVGU program’s prerequisites to strengthen the file.
Germany Student Visa for Otto von Guericke University Applicants
Indian students admitted to Otto von Guericke University apply for the Germany National Visa (Visa Type D) for Study Purposes at the German Consulate in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata or Bengaluru. The visa allows stays over 90 days and converts to a residence permit for study after arrival in Magdeburg. Applicants must show admission letter, blocked account funding, health insurance, and proof of language proficiency.
The current blocked account minimum for German study visas is €11,904 per year (₹12.99 Lakhs), deposited with a provider such as Fintiba, Expatrio or Coracle. Book the visa appointment as soon as the OVGU admission letter arrives, since Consulate slots fill fast for the September and April travel windows. After arrival, register your address at the Magdeburg city office within two weeks and apply for the residence permit within 90 days.
2026 update: The Auswärtiges Amt continues to prioritise study visa slots for STEM applicants at German public universities, so OVGU admits usually clear visa within six to ten weeks. Missing an APS certificate at the visa stage blocks issuance regardless of the OVGU offer, so treat APS as a prerequisite for both admission and visa.
Otto von Guericke University Admissions Tips and Checklist
The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Otto von Guericke University, with a focus on the time-consuming APS and translation stages that trip up first-time applicants.
- Start APS 4 to 5 months early: the German Embassy in New Delhi processes APS certificates in about 3 to 4 months, so start the moment your Bachelor’s transcripts are final
- Book IELTS 6 to 8 weeks before deadline: IELTS scores take 13 days to release, and OVGU accepts the TRF as a soft upload initially
- Request transcripts 8 weeks before deadline: Indian universities issue consolidated marksheets slowly, and sworn translation adds another 2 to 3 weeks
- Verify subject prerequisites: map each Indian course to the OVGU program prerequisite list, especially for M.Sc. Digital Engineering and Data and Knowledge Engineering
- File the Relevance of UG Studies form correctly: Indian PG applicants must complete this form for uni-assist, and any mismatch delays the VPD
- Pay the €75 (₹8,189) uni-assist fee only after final review: the fee is non-refundable regardless of the admission outcome
- Send hard copies only if uni-assist asks: most cycles run fully online, and posting unrequested documents just delays processing
- Track myOVGU after uni-assist forwards VPD: OVGU issues the final decision through the myOVGU portal, not by email
- Read peer perspectives: the student reviews from earlier Indian intakes cover housing, language and campus logistics that admissions pages skip
Otto von Guericke University rewards well-prepared Indian applicants who plan the APS and translation timeline early, meet the subject prerequisites, and clear the IELTS or TOEFL floor for the target program. The public-university cost profile, semester contribution of €311.30 (₹33,997), and access to strong engineering research make OVGU a strong-value option for STEM master’s aspirants targeting the Winter 2027/28 primary intake.

- I like everything about the university like academics, curriculum, teaching methods by the professors.
- The exam difficulty is of high level which I personally enjoy.
Dislikes
- The only drawback is the professors want the students to do their master thesis only in the university and reject all offers from the company.
- The topics available in the university are too advanced and takes 1-2+ years to complete. This will have a great impact on any students life as it delays their MS degree and face issues for full-time job search, monthly expenses, and visa extensions.
- Therefore, I would suggest anyone to prefer other universities.
