Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich fees for Indian students range from EUR 2,000 per semester (INR 1.90 Lakhs) for a Bachelor’s to EUR 3,000 per semester (INR 2.85 Lakhs) for a standard Master’s, with MSc Computer Science, MSc Theoretical and Mathematical Physics, and MSc Business Administration the three PG programmes Indian applicants file into most often. LMU is a public research university, so tuition sits far below UK or US private-university rates; the cost pressure sits on Munich living, not on the fee itself.
Your realistic entry is Winter Semester 2027/28, starting October 2027, with the non-EU application window opening in April 2027 and closing 15 July 2027. Summer Semester 2028 (April 2028 start) opens after it, but most LMU Master’s admit into Winter only, so plan the Winter cycle as your primary target.
A standard two-year MSc at LMU with tuition and Munich living comes to roughly INR 34-38 Lakhs total, and a three-year BSc to roughly INR 48-54 Lakhs. All INR figures on this page use one exchange rate applied consistently.
Exchange rate used: 1 EUR = INR 94.85.
Winter Semester 2027/28 Intake: Planning Window
Intake: Winter Semester 2027/28 (October 2027 start) is the open cycle for non-EU applicants, with the deadline of 15 July 2027. Summer Semester 2028 (April 2028) opens after it and is Master’s-restricted, most programmes accept only Winter admits. The Winter 2026/27 window has already closed on 15 July 2026.
Fee update: Bavaria’s non-EU tuition law from Winter Semester 2024/25 applies: EUR 4,000 per year (INR 3.79 Lakhs) for Bachelor’s and EUR 6,000 per year (INR 5.69 Lakhs) for Master’s, plus EUR 170 semester contribution per year (INR 16,124).
When to pay: LMU takes no upfront tuition deposit; the semester contribution and tuition are billed together after admission, due before the enrollment date (Immatrikulation) in October 2027 for Winter starters.
Scholarships: DAAD Study Scholarship for Winter 2027/28 typically closes November 2026, plan the application well before then. Indian awards (Inlaks, JN Tata, KC Mahindra) open in the January-March 2027 window.

LMU’s tuition sits on the Bavaria state non-EU fee scale that took effect from Winter Semester 2024/25: EUR 2,000 per semester (INR 1.90 Lakhs) for Bachelor’s and EUR 3,000 per semester (INR 2.85 Lakhs) for standard Master’s. On top, every enrolled student pays a semester contribution of EUR 85 (INR 8,062) that covers student services, part of the transport ticket, and student union support.
Bachelor’s programmes at LMU run six semesters (three years) and are almost entirely taught in German, so B2 or C1 language proficiency is a hard prerequisite. All standard BSc and BA courses charge the same non-EU tuition, so the differentiator for Indian applicants is language of instruction and programme fit, not fee.
| Programme | Duration | Annual Tuition (EUR) | Annual Tuition (INR) | Total Programme (INR) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BSc Business Administration | 3 years | 4,000 | 3.79 Lakhs | 11.38 Lakhs |

Master’s programmes are the primary route for Indian students at LMU, and the majority of the popular options are English-taught. Standard consecutive Master’s follow the state non-EU tuition of EUR 6,000 per year (INR 5.69 Lakhs). Executive and specialised professional programmes such as the Munich School of Management MBA sit outside this scale and are priced separately.
| Programme | Duration | Annual Tuition (EUR) | Annual Tuition (INR) | Total Programme (INR) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MSc Computer Science | 2 years | 6,000 | 5.69 Lakhs | 11.38 Lakhs |

Source: LMU International Office non-EU tuition schedule (Bavaria state law, effective Winter Semester 2024/25). Semester contribution of EUR 170 per year (INR 16,124) additional. Course names verified on LMU’s official programme catalogue; individual programme pages confirm identical state fee for all consecutive Master’s listed.
Uni-assist processes many LMU international applications and charges a review fee of EUR 75 (INR 7,114) for the first programme and EUR 30 (INR 2,846) for each additional in the same term. Programmes that admit directly through LMU’s Student Office charge no separate application fee, only the standard tuition and semester contribution on enrollment.
Note: The Munich School of Management MBA is the exception to the state fee scale, priced at approximately EUR 13,320 per year (INR 12.63 Lakhs) for a two-year full-time programme, more than double the standard MSc. If your target is an MBA rather than a consecutive Master’s, budget the full programme at roughly INR 26-28 Lakhs in tuition alone.
LMU charged non-EU international students zero tuition until Winter Semester 2024/25, when Bavaria reintroduced fees under a new state law. The trend line below is short by design: for four decades before 2024/25, only the semester contribution applied, so year-on-year growth is measured off a low base and jumps sharply on the policy change.
| Academic Year | Master’s Tuition (EUR) | Master’s Tuition (INR) | YoY Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2023/24 | 0 + EUR 170 semester fee | 16,124 | Baseline (no tuition) |
| 2024/25 | 6,000 + EUR 170 semester fee | 5.85 Lakhs | Bavaria fees introduced |
| 2025/26 | 6,000 + EUR 170 semester fee | 5.85 Lakhs | 0.0% |
| 2026/27 | 6,000 + EUR 170 semester fee | 5.85 Lakhs | 0.0% |
| 2027/28 (your intake) | 6,000 + EUR 170 semester fee | 5.85 Lakhs | 0.0% |
Source: LMU International Office fee archive and Bavarian Ministry for Science and the Arts (StMWK) announcements. The Bavarian state fee has held at EUR 3,000 per semester since the 2024/25 rollout with no scheduled increase for Winter 2027/28.
Key Insight: The Winter Semester 2027/28 intake is billed at the same EUR 6,000 per year (INR 5.69 Lakhs) as the current 2026/27 cohort, so a review of the fee mid-cycle is unlikely. Lock your budget on that number; the risk of a Bavaria law revision that resets fees higher exists only after this intake completes.
Note that a legal challenge to the Bavaria fee law has been filed by student groups in the state administrative court, but no ruling has changed the current rate. Plan on paying EUR 6,000 per year (INR 5.69 Lakhs) for the full two years of a Master’s, unless a court decision reverses the law during your enrollment.
Munich is Germany’s most expensive city; rent is the single largest line item for any LMU student. The federal government’s blocked account minimum of EUR 992 per month (INR 94,091) is the visa floor for financial proof, but real cost of living in Munich sits closer to EUR 1,100-1,300 per month (INR 1.04-1.23 Lakhs) once shared-flat rent, groceries, and health insurance are added.
| Expense | Monthly (EUR) | Monthly (INR) | Annual (INR) | Notes for Indian Students |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rent (shared flat or Studentenwerk dorm) | 500-750 | 47,425-71,138 | 5.69-8.54 Lakhs | Studentenwerk dorms cheapest but waitlisted 12-18 months; apply on offer receipt |
| Groceries and food | 200-250 | 18,970-23,713 | 2.28-2.85 Lakhs | Cook at home; Aldi, Lidl, and Turkish supermarkets in Neuperlach cheapest |
| Public health insurance (TK, AOK) | 120 | 11,382 | 1.37 Lakhs | Mandatory for enrollment; private plans EUR 30-50 cheaper but risky if you fall ill |
| Public transport (MVV) | 30-49 | 2,846-4,648 | 34,146-55,776 | Semester ticket partially covered by the semester contribution |
| Utilities, internet, phone | 80-100 | 7,588-9,485 | 91,056-1.14 Lakhs | Often included in shared-flat "Warmmiete"; check before signing |
| Books, study materials, personal | 100-130 | 9,485-12,331 | 1.14-1.48 Lakhs | Library scan copies save 60-70% versus buying textbooks |
| Total (typical Indian student) | 1,030-1,309 | 97,696-1.24 Lakhs | 11.72-14.90 Lakhs | Munich sits 30-40% above Berlin or Leipzig on rent |
Source: LMU International Office cost-of-living estimate, Studentenwerk München accommodation rates, and the German Federal Foreign Office blocked account minimum of EUR 992 per month for the National Type D student visa.
Note: Munich rent has risen 40% since 2020 and vacancy sits below 1%. Do not wait for admission before beginning the housing search; join Studentenwerk waitlists (studentenwerk-muenchen.de) as soon as you have applied to LMU, since the queue often exceeds one full semester.
The Studentenwerk operates over 11,000 subsidised beds across Munich and pricing runs EUR 280-550 per month (INR 26,558-52,168), roughly half the private-market rate. Private flatshares (WG) usually cost EUR 550-800 per month (INR 52,168-75,880) in accessible neighbourhoods such as Schwabing, Sendling, or Neuhausen. Central Maxvorstadt near the LMU main campus commands a premium of another EUR 100-200 per month.
Currency Tip: Your blocked account of EUR 11,904 (INR 11.29 Lakhs) is opened before the visa interview, well ahead of the October 2027 enrollment. Fund the account through a specialised provider (Fintiba, Coracle, or Expatrio) rather than a bank wire, forex spread runs 0.5-1.0% cheaper. Once in Germany, use a Wise or Revolut card for daily spend to avoid the 2-3% mark-up international ATMs charge.
Total first-year cost for an Indian MSc student at LMU runs approximately INR 17-20 Lakhs, split between tuition, semester contribution, mandatory Munich living costs, and one-time visa and setup charges. Bachelor’s students see roughly INR 15-18 Lakhs in Year 1, reflecting the lower EUR 4,000 tuition.
| Scenario | Tuition (INR) | Living (INR) | Mandatory Fees (INR) | Total Year 1 (INR) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BSc, 3 years (Year 1, 12 months) | 3.79 Lakhs | 11.72-14.90 Lakhs | 36,543 | 15.87-19.05 Lakhs |
| MSc standard, 2 years (Year 1, 12 months) | 5.69 Lakhs | 11.72-14.90 Lakhs | 36,543 | 17.77-20.95 Lakhs |
| MSc + Excellence scholarship (net Year 1) | 3.79 Lakhs | 11.72-14.90 Lakhs | 36,543 | 15.87-19.05 Lakhs |
| Munich School of Management MBA (Year 1) | 12.63 Lakhs | 11.72-14.90 Lakhs | 36,543 | 24.71-27.89 Lakhs |
Mandatory fees for Year 1 include semester contribution EUR 170 (INR 16,124), National Type D visa fee EUR 75 (INR 7,114), and APS certificate for Indian applicants approximately EUR 130 (INR 12,331). The blocked account of EUR 11,904 is a returnable deposit, drawn down monthly, not counted here as an additional cost.
Across a full two-year MSc, budget approximately INR 34-38 Lakhs for tuition and living combined; a three-year BSc runs approximately INR 48-54 Lakhs. If you fund the two-year MSc entirely on an education loan of INR 35 Lakhs at 10.5% for 10 years, the EMI works out to approximately INR 47,300 per month.
Key Insight: The single largest controllable saving on Year 1 for the Winter 2027/28 intake is securing a DAAD Study Scholarship, which covers full tuition plus EUR 992 monthly living (INR 94,091), effectively bringing your out-of-pocket to zero. The DAAD deadline falls in November 2026, apply before other Indian scholarships open in January 2027, since DAAD is the highest-value award for LMU.
LMU’s own scholarship pool is modest for international students; the Deutschlandstipendium is the primary in-house award. The high-value funding for Indian applicants sits outside the university, with DAAD, Erasmus+, and Indian foundations providing the bulk of Master’s tuition and living cover.
| Scholarship | Amount (EUR) | Amount (INR) | Eligibility | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deutschlandstipendium (Germany Scholarship) | 300 per month for 12 months | 28,455 per month / 3.41 Lakhs per year | Enrolled LMU student, academic merit and social engagement | Application after enrollment; annual cycle typically opens January |
| LMU Munich Excellence Scholarship | Partial tuition waiver | Case-by-case | Top 5-10% of admitted Master’s cohort in select programmes | Faculty nomination; no separate form |
| STIBET Contact Scholarship (DAAD via LMU) | 300-750 per month | 28,455-71,138 per month | Non-EU international students in financial need | Apply through LMU International Office after enrollment |

The DAAD Study Scholarship for Winter Semester 2027/28 is currently open, with a deadline in November 2026. Indian foundation awards open in the January-March 2027 window; treat DAAD as your priority target because it stacks the largest single funding package for Germany.
| Scholarship | Amount (EUR / INR) | Coverage | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|
| DAAD Study Scholarship for Foreign Graduates | 934-1,300 per month + tuition waiver | Full living, tuition, health insurance, travel | November 2026 (annual, for the following academic year) |
| Erasmus+ (for LMU exchange partners) | 350-550 per month top-up | Living support for exchange semester | Faculty-specific, usually February |
| Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation Scholarship | Up to USD 100,000 total (INR 84 Lakhs) | Tuition, living, travel for Master’s | Mid-March 2027 (typical annual close) |
| JN Tata Endowment Loan Scholarship | INR 1-10 Lakhs (interest-free loan) | Partial tuition support, needs-based | January 2027 (opens January, closes March) |
| KC Mahindra Scholarships for Post-Graduate Studies Abroad | INR 4 Lakhs top award, up to INR 10 Lakhs for Top 50 | Tuition top-up for Master’s abroad | January-March 2027 |
| Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship | Interest-free loan up to INR 20 Lakhs | Master’s / PhD support | Applications typically open February 2027 |
| Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship | 50% grant, 50% loan for full tuition and living | Full costs for Master’s | 31 March 2027 (rolling annual) |

Tip for Indian Students: Target the DAAD Study Scholarship first for this Winter 2027/28 intake, deadline November 2026 gives you roughly four months to prepare. If DAAD does not come through, Inlaks (mid-March 2027) and Aga Khan (31 March 2027) are the highest-value fallbacks, both potentially covering full Master’s costs. Applying to all three sequentially costs nothing but effort, and any one of them removes the loan pressure entirely.
LMU takes no upfront tuition deposit for its admission letter (Zulassungsbescheid). Tuition and the semester contribution are billed together after you accept the admission, and the full amount is due before your enrollment date (Immatrikulation) in October 2027 for Winter starters. This is a Germany-specific model that differs from UK or US universities that require CAS or I-20 deposits weeks or months in advance.
Semester instalments recur every six months: EUR 3,085 (INR 2.93 Lakhs) for a Master’s student, due before the start of each new semester. There is no full-payment discount, LMU bills strictly per semester, so budget for the second Winter and Summer semester instalments in April 2028 and October 2028.
Source: LMU Studentenkanzlei (Student Office) tuition and payment page, and the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and the Arts non-EU tuition regulation.
Tip for Indian Students: The visa appointment queue at the German Consulate is your critical path, not tuition payment. Book the appointment the day your Zulassungsbescheid arrives, since Mumbai and Bengaluru slots for the Winter 2027/28 intake fill up 8-12 weeks in advance. Delay by two weeks and you may miss the October enrollment window entirely, forcing a deferral to Summer 2028 for programmes that admit both semesters.
The most time-sensitive hidden cost for the Winter 2027/28 intake is the APS certification through the German Embassy’s Academic Evaluation Centre, mandatory for every Indian applicant and taking 3-4 weeks to process. Miss the timeline and you cannot submit a full LMU application by 15 July 2027.
Total first-year hidden costs (excluding the returnable rent deposit) run approximately INR 60,000-90,000. Add the rent deposit and one-time flight from India (INR 40,000-70,000 economy), and Year-1 setup lands closer to INR 2.5-3.5 Lakhs on top of tuition and monthly living.
Note: The cost most Indian families forget is the APS certificate, mandatory since 2022 for every Indian applicant to a German university. Book the appointment in Delhi 8-10 weeks before your target LMU application deadline; the fee itself is trivial at EUR 130, but the process gate means no APS equals no LMU application accepted.
The most urgent saving lever for the Winter 2027/28 intake is submitting the DAAD Study Scholarship application before its November 2026 deadline; success there removes both tuition and living from your loan requirement.
Tip for Indian Students: The single highest-value lever for the Winter 2027/28 intake is the DAAD Study Scholarship. A successful DAAD covers full tuition (EUR 12,000 across two years, INR 11.38 Lakhs) plus living stipend (EUR 22,416 across two years, INR 21.26 Lakhs), a total gross value of roughly INR 32-34 Lakhs, converting your entire funding equation from a loan to a grant. Every hour spent on the DAAD application pays a higher rate of return than any part-time work in Munich.
An LMU Master’s totalling approximately INR 34-38 Lakhs across tuition and Munich living, followed by a Munich starting salary of EUR 55,000-65,000 per year (INR 52-62 Lakhs) for STEM graduates, delivers a payback horizon of 3-5 years on an education loan of the same amount, one of the strongest cost-to-outcome ratios among globally ranked universities.
LMU sits at global rank 34 in Times Higher Education 2026, 61 in QS World 2027, 42 in ARWU 2025, and 57 in US News Best Global Universities 2026-27. On Collegedunia’s Study Abroad Ranking 2026, LMU is ranked 2nd in Germany and 34th globally out of 824 institutions. That places it in the top 5% of universities worldwide at a fee of EUR 6,000 per year (INR 5.69 Lakhs), less than one-fifth what a comparably ranked UK or US university charges.
The post-study route is a further differentiator: Germany grants LMU Master’s graduates an 18-month job seeker visa after programme completion, valid to search for full-time work in a graduate-relevant field. Munich hosts BMW, Siemens, Google, Microsoft, Allianz, and Munich Re; STEM and business Master’s placement into these firms is direct, not distant. Financing an INR 35 Lakh loan at 10.5% for 10 years yields an EMI of approximately INR 47,300 per month, which sits comfortably within a Munich graduate net monthly salary of EUR 2,800-3,300 (INR 2.66-3.13 Lakhs).
Key Insight: Net cost after a DAAD Study Scholarship falls to near zero for two years, and net cost after LMU’s Excellence Scholarship or the Deutschlandstipendium (INR 3.41 Lakhs per year) drops the two-year Master’s outlay to approximately INR 27-30 Lakhs total. The intake decision that makes LMU financially optimal is applying for DAAD in the November 2026 window before you apply to LMU itself in April-July 2027.
The Winter Semester 2027/28 intake at LMU costs approximately INR 17-20 Lakhs in Year 1 and INR 34-38 Lakhs across a full two-year Master’s, with tuition fixed at EUR 6,000 per year (INR 5.69 Lakhs) and Munich living the larger and more variable cost. A successful DAAD Study Scholarship application before November 2026 reduces the net cost to near zero; Inlaks and Aga Khan applications in March 2027 remain strong fallbacks. Prioritise APS certification by March 2027, book the German Consulate visa slot the moment the LMU admission letter arrives, and treat Studentenwerk dorm applications as an immediate action once you apply, not a post-admission task.
Ques. What is the total cost of studying at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich for Indian students?
Ans. A two-year Master’s at LMU costs approximately INR 34-38 Lakhs in total, comprising EUR 12,000 tuition (INR 11.38 Lakhs), EUR 340 semester contributions (INR 32,249), and EUR 22,000-27,000 Munich living costs (INR 20.87-25.61 Lakhs). A three-year Bachelor’s runs approximately INR 48-54 Lakhs total.
Ques. Does Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich charge tuition fees for international students?
Ans. Yes, from Winter Semester 2024/25 onwards under Bavaria state law. Non-EU international students pay EUR 2,000 per semester (INR 1.90 Lakhs) for Bachelor’s and EUR 3,000 per semester (INR 2.85 Lakhs) for Master’s. EU and EEA students continue to pay only the semester contribution.
Ques. What is the semester contribution fee at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich?
Ans. Every enrolled LMU student pays a semester contribution of approximately EUR 85 (INR 8,062), covering student services, part of the public transport ticket, and student union support. This is separate from tuition and applies to both EU and non-EU students.
Ques. How much money do I need in a blocked account for Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich?
Ans. The German federal government sets the blocked account minimum at EUR 11,904 for one year (INR 11.29 Lakhs), equivalent to EUR 992 per month (INR 94,091). This is a returnable deposit drawn down monthly for living expenses, not an additional cost. Use Fintiba, Expatrio, or Coracle to open the account before your visa appointment.
Ques. Are there scholarships for Indian students at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich?
Ans. Yes. The highest-value award is the DAAD Study Scholarship for Foreign Graduates, covering full tuition plus EUR 934-1,300 per month (INR 88,590-1.23 Lakhs) in stipend. LMU also offers the Deutschlandstipendium (EUR 300 per month, INR 28,455) and the Excellence Scholarship. External Indian awards include Inlaks, JN Tata, KC Mahindra, Narotam Sekhsaria, and Aga Khan Foundation.
Ques. What is the application fee for Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich?
Ans. LMU does not charge a direct application fee. Programmes routed through uni-assist incur a review fee of EUR 75 (INR 7,114) for the first programme and EUR 30 (INR 2,846) for each additional programme in the same semester. Direct-to-LMU applications carry no fee at all.
Ques. Do I need to pay any deposit before enrollment at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich?
Ans. No, LMU does not require any tuition deposit at the offer stage. Tuition and semester contribution together (EUR 3,085 per semester for Master’s, INR 2.93 Lakhs) are billed after you accept admission and pay only before your Immatrikulation (enrollment) at the start of the semester in October 2027 for Winter starters.
Ques. Is Munich expensive for Indian students studying at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich?
Ans. Yes, Munich is the most expensive German city. Typical monthly living for an Indian student runs EUR 1,030-1,309 (INR 97,696-1.24 Lakhs), 30-40% above Berlin or Leipzig. Rent alone consumes EUR 500-800 per month (INR 47,425-75,880) even in shared flats. Studentenwerk dorms are the main cost-saving lever if you can secure a spot.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time to cover Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich costs?
Ans. Yes, non-EU students on a National Type D visa may work up to 20 hours per week during term and 40 hours per week during vacations. At the Bavaria minimum wage of EUR 13.90 per hour, 20 hours yields approximately EUR 1,100 per month (INR 1.04 Lakhs), sufficient to cover rent plus groceries in a shared flat.
Ques. Are MBA fees at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich different from regular Master’s?
Ans. Yes, the Munich School of Management MBA sits outside the state fee scale at approximately EUR 13,320 per year (INR 12.63 Lakhs), more than double the standard consecutive Master’s fee. Executive and specialised professional programmes are similarly priced, so budget the full two-year MBA at approximately INR 26-28 Lakhs in tuition alone before Munich living costs.
Ques. How does Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich fee compare to other German universities?
Ans. LMU tuition matches every public university in Bavaria under the state law: EUR 2,000 per semester for Bachelor’s and EUR 3,000 per semester for Master’s for non-EU students. Universities outside Bavaria (Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Heidelberg) still charge zero tuition for most non-EU students, only the semester contribution. Munich’s higher cost of living, though, evens the total-cost gap for those cities.
Ques. What is the post-study work visa duration after a Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich Master’s?
Ans. Germany grants an 18-month job seeker visa after Master’s completion, valid to find full-time work in a graduate-relevant field. Once employed, this converts to an EU Blue Card, giving permanent residency eligibility in 21-33 months. Munich’s tech, automotive, and finance employers actively recruit LMU STEM and business graduates with starting salaries of EUR 55,000-65,000 per year (INR 52-62 Lakhs).

Quite good. It was nice in the sense that the education system was quite extensive and the staff was very cooperative. There was also the option of finishing your studies within 5 semesters and with Corona, they extended it to 6 semesters. The halls where the classes were conducted were also well equipped.

It has been great. I got to learn a lot and the highlight was different research experiences I had in different institutes and fields.

Overall it is a nice experience. Obviously getting acquainted with the new life style and teaching is challenging and will initially be difficult, but it gets better with time. Attending lectures in the University instead of sitting at home and watching them online definitely helps.
Choosing LMU Munich was a no brainer. Its one of the best university in Germany and Europe. The research makes the backbone and it's worth it.
