University of Amsterdam Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

UvA admissions requirements for Indian applicants centre on Bachelor’s grade equivalence, English proficiency and Nuffic credential recognition.

  • Academic: Bachelor’s degree from a recognised Indian institution with minimum 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 (recommended); competitive programmes such as AI and Finance target 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 and above.
  • English proficiency: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 92 (0-120 legacy scale), Cambridge C1 Advanced or LanguageCert C1. Some programmes require IELTS 7.0.
  • Credential verification: Nuffic, the Dutch international education body, evaluates Indian Bachelor’s against Dutch WO (research university) standards through Studielink upload.
  • Programme-specific: GMAT 600+ or GRE for MBA and Executive Master’s at Amsterdam Business School; portfolio for design and film Master’s; motivation letter for all Master’s.

Key insight: UvA does not accept 3-year Indian Bachelor’s degrees uniformly. Indian BA and BCom holders from non-research universities may need a Master’s-level pre-Master programme to qualify; BTech, BE and Delhi University Honours degrees clear the WO equivalence check directly.

University of Amsterdam Acceptance Rate 2027

UvA does not officially publish an overall acceptance rate. Based on programme-level intake data, the estimated Master’s acceptance sits at 15% to 20% (estimated) for competitive tracks and 30% to 40% (estimated) for less selective social sciences and humanities. The figure is directional, not a UvA disclosure.

Amsterdam Business School Master’s, MSc AI and MSc Data Science and Business Analytics are the tightest tracks for Indian applicants. Communication Science, Political Science and LLM programmes admit a wider share of qualified candidates.

Reality check: Rate matters less than fit for UvA. Applicants meeting the Bachelor’s %, IELTS 7.0 and a strong statement of purpose almost always clear the academic bar for standard programmes; Amsterdam Business School and AI reject strong profiles due to cohort caps.

University of Amsterdam Campus, Facilities and Student Life

UvA operates four main campus clusters woven into central Amsterdam, connected by tram and metro within 15 minutes of each other.

  • Location: Roeterseiland (business, law, social sciences), Amsterdam Science Park (science, IT), University Quarter (humanities, dentistry) and Academic Medical Center (medicine); tram lines 14 and 19 link all four to Amsterdam Centraal.
  • Housing: UvA does not guarantee accommodation for international students; partner agency DUWO offers rooms at € 700 to € 1,200 per month (₹ 68,600 to ₹ 1,17,600) on first-come-first-serve basis.
  • Facilities: 15+ libraries including the University Library on Singel canal, Amsterdam Science Park (Europe’s largest tech park), CREA cultural centre and USC sports complex.
  • Indian community: Over 300 Indian students active across programmes; Indian Student Association hosts Diwali, Holi, cricket meetups and career networking with Amsterdam-based Indian professionals.

What Indian students say: Housing is the single biggest stressor in the first semester, with many taking temporary Airbnb before securing DUWO placements. Weekend Indian grocery shopping at Kalustyan’s on Albert Cuyp Market is common, and Amsterdam’s biking culture surprises most first-years positively.

UvA graduates achieve strong employment outcomes across Dutch and European markets, supported by the Amsterdam Business School Career Services and the university-wide UvA Career Centre.

  • Employment within 12 months: 92% for Amsterdam Business School Master’s graduates per institutional disclosure; UvA-wide graduate employability rate exceeds 90%.
  • Median starting salary: € 45,000 (₹ 44.1 Lakh, Netherlands market median for STEM and business Master’s graduates); ABS Executive MBA median at € 85,000 (₹ 83.3 Lakh).
  • Recruiters (representative): Booking.com, Adyen, ASML, ING, ABN AMRO, KPMG, Deloitte, McKinsey, BCG, Philips and multiple Amsterdam-based tech startups.
  • Post-study work: Orientation Year visa (zoekjaar), a 12-month Dutch permit to search for skilled employment after graduation without a sponsor.
  • Indian alumni: Present across Amsterdam fintech, consulting and consumer-tech firms; UvA alumni also lead multiple India-Netherlands trade initiatives.

Insider note: Indian STEM and business Master’s graduates from UvA typically secure roles within the zoekjaar year, with Amsterdam’s Booking.com, Adyen and ING actively hiring international talent. Dutch language B1 is not required for most tech and finance roles, but improves opportunities in consulting.

University of Amsterdam vs Peer Universities

Indian applicants weighing UvA typically also consider VU Amsterdam, TU Delft, Leiden, Erasmus Rotterdam and Utrecht as Dutch peers. The table compares QS 2027 rank, indicative annual Master’s fee and each peer’s distinguishing strength.

UvA stands out for Indian Master’s applicants who want a globally top-60 research university, top-ranked social science and communication programmes, and a central Amsterdam location with strong post-study work pathways. TU Delft outranks UvA in QS but caters only to engineering profiles.

The University of Amsterdam suits Indian Master’s applicants with a research-university Bachelor’s, IELTS 6.5+ and readiness to spend € 30,000 (₹ 29.4 Lakh) annually against a € 45,000 (₹ 44.1 Lakh) Netherlands starting salary, positioning ROI within 3 to 4 years of graduation. The zoekjaar orientation year visa pathway makes it especially strong for those planning to stay and work in Europe.

UvA is not the right pick for Indian applicants targeting pure engineering (TU Delft fits better), those needing guaranteed campus housing, or budget-constrained families where annual outlay above ₹ 27 Lakh is unaffordable. In such cases, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam offers similar Amsterdam exposure at a lower fee band.

University of Amsterdam FAQs

Ques. How many English-taught programmes does University of Amsterdam offer to Indian applicants?

Ans. UvA offers over 200 English-taught programmes for international students. This includes roughly 100 Master’s programmes across all seven faculties, around 15 English-taught Bachelor’s tracks (including PPLE, Data Science and AI, Political Science) and multiple funded PhD positions. Indian students most commonly enrol in MSc programmes in Data Science, AI, Finance, Business and Communication Science, all delivered fully in English with no Dutch language requirement.

Ques. How many hours can Indian students work part-time at UvA in Amsterdam?

Ans. Indian students on a Dutch study residence permit can work 16 hours per week during the academic year or full-time in June, July and August. Employers must apply for a work permit (TWV) through Dutch labour authority UWV before hiring, which most Amsterdam student-friendly employers already handle. The 2026 Dutch minimum wage sits near € 12.83 per hour, yielding roughly € 820 per month for part-time work.

Ques. Does University of Amsterdam require GRE or GMAT for Master’s admissions?

Ans. Most UvA Master’s programmes do not require GRE or GMAT. The Amsterdam Business School MBA and Executive Master’s request GMAT (target 600+) or GRE. Quantitative MSc programmes like Econometrics, Finance and some Economics tracks may recommend GRE for competitive Indian applicants. MSc Data Science, AI and Computer Science accept strong academic transcripts and a coding portfolio without any standardised test scores from Indian applicants.

Ques. What is the application fee at UvA for Indian applicants?

Ans. The University of Amsterdam charges a € 100 application fee for Non-EU/EEA Master’s applications, payable through Studielink using an international card. Bachelor’s applications carry a € 100 fee too. The fee is non-refundable and covers document processing plus Nuffic credential pre-check for Indian degrees. Waivers are rare, granted only through official partner exchange programmes; scholarship applications do not waive this base fee.

Ques. Can Indian students bring dependents on a UvA study visa?

Ans. Yes, Indian Master’s and PhD students at UvA can bring spouses and minor children on a dependent MVV/VVR visa, the Dutch long-stay entry visa and residence permit combination. The primary applicant must prove sufficient income of roughly € 1,650 per dependent per month via a Dutch blocked account or a formal sponsor letter. Dependent spouses receive an automatic work permit allowing full-time employment across the Netherlands.

Ques. Which Indian banks approve education loans for University of Amsterdam?

Ans. State Bank of India, HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, Prodigy Finance and MPOWER Financing regularly approve loans for UvA Master’s admits. Most Indian banks fund up to ₹ 80 Lakh for Master’s programmes; SBI and HDFC Credila cover full tuition plus living costs against Indian property collateral. Non-collateral options through Prodigy and MPOWER cover up to $75,000 for admitted students with strong academic profiles and clear repayment potential.

Ques. How does UvA verify Indian academic transcripts during admission?

Ans. The University of Amsterdam uses Nuffic’s International Credential Evaluation (IcDW) database and its own admissions office to check Indian Bachelor’s against Dutch WO research university standards. Indian applicants upload attested transcripts, degree certificate and consolidated marksheet via Studielink. UvA may request additional WES verification if the Indian institution is unfamiliar to Nuffic. Full processing takes 4 to 6 weeks after documents arrive.

Ques. Is the February intake available for Indian students at University of Amsterdam?

Ans. Yes, UvA offers a February intake for selected programmes including research Master’s tracks and some MSc Business and Communication options. The programme range is significantly smaller than September, and popular tracks like AI, Data Science and Finance run only in September. Non-EU February 2027 applications close 1 October 2026. Verify programme-specific availability on the individual UvA course page before applying for February start.

  • My college has 3 main campuses Science Park 904: Home for all the science and technology courses, located in Amsterdam East. Also home to USC (University Sports Centrum) which is a massive sports area that offers a lot of different areas for all kind of sports and associations for the students.Roetersstraat 11: Also called the Roeterseiland Campus. Main courses offering most of the courses. Has buildings named A to M. A is the law school, B isfor Behavioral Sciences, E is Economics and Business, G is Psychology. Some buildings only have study rooms and no lecture halls.Oudemanhuispoort: Most historical campus, located right in the city center next to touristy canals. Teaches world famous courses like Media and Culture (Number 1 in QS world ranking)
  • All the campuses provide plenty of study rooms, sports are only available in the Science Park Campus, and every campus has it's own food court. (although my favorite is the one at Roeterseiland Campus E Building)
  • Every study usually have a study association for it, amongst other associations that may not be related to a faculty or study at all. This means there are more associations that you can imagine, and events happening all year long. Every association has a different structure but you can become a member to gain some experience and also apply to the board of study associations in your later years. Doing a board year is respected highly in the Netherlands, and being in board of some associations or student councils also pays you a monthly compensation.

Fees

  • UvA charges international students an annual institutional fee, which increases slightly each year. The good thing is: you pay the same amount you paid in your first year for every consecutive year you study. Back in 2022, the fees for my program was 9,650 euros which is the same fees I still pay although for new students its about 11K euros.  You can choose if you wanna pay monthly or yearly. I pay yearly, because euro rates are uncertain hahah.
  • Accommodation charges really depends on what you find yourself as I said already the university does not help you find it. An average room in Amsterdam is about 800 euros a month. I have a public transport subscription that gives me discount so I pay about 40/50 euros a month, plus I bike a lot, which is a rented bike for 20 euros a month. Food/Going out/other expenses are manageable in 350-550 euros per month range.

  • Two campuses: one in the city centre, one at Science Park in the city outskirts.
  • All top class facilities, such as library, volleyball complex, Gym, Sports complex, compute data center, etc.
  • There are not festivals as such. There are lots of clubs that you can join as per your interest. Amsterdam is generally a happening city.
  • Events such as King's Day in the city are culturally rich events, but they are not specific to college.

Fees

  • Tuition fees: 22000
  • Living costs: 12000-18000 (assuming decent student life)
  • The fee is charged per semester or yearly and you can choose how to pay.
  • Monthly expenses include rent, food, groceries, and transportation. Rent is about 500-800 €/month; groceries would be 100€; transportation, if you buy a bike, is a one-time case of 200-400€ or each tram/bus journey costs about 2-3€ on average.

  • My university has approx. three campuses. It’s spread across the city. Different faculties are located in different parts of Amsterdam. Following is the list:
    • Roeterseiland Campus—This is where you’ll find Social Sciences, Economics & Business, and Law. It's near the city centre and really modern.
    • Science Park—Located in the east of Amsterdam, this is where the Science faculty is based. It's more like a traditional campus with labs, lecture halls, etc.
    • City Centre (Oudemanhuispoort & around Spui) – This is the heart of the Humanities faculty. Some of the buildings are historic and give proper "old European university" vibes.
    • Amsterdam Academic Medical Centre (AMC) – Located in the southeast, this is for students in Medicine.
  • Each main location has its own library. There’s a sports centre called USC (Universitair Sportcentrum) with gyms, fitness classes, courts, etc. – quite affordable for students. Medical services are not directly provided on campus like in some universities.
  • Intreeweek is the big intro week for new bachelor students – tonnes of activities, parties, and cultural stuff to get to know Amsterdam and meet other students. Different faculties organise career fairs, academic symposiums, and themed weeks (like Law Career Week or Sustainability Week). There are some student groups like VSAE, etc., that organise different events for the students.

Fees

  • Tuition fees for the Non-EU Student in my course were 16,500 euros, and hostel charges vary depending upon the student housing you get. There are options of 400 Euro, 510 Euro, 650 euros and 950 Euro approx.
  • For international students, charges have to be paid yearly for the master's programme. Can't say about bachelors.
  • 300 to 500 Euros considering transportation, food and other expenses. Rent can easily go from 800 to 1500 euros, depending upon the locality.

  • There are 2 campuses; one is small, and one is big. There are frequent festivals and events that take place on the campus. There are sports events and festivals like Diwali that are celebrated to promote inclusivity.
  • Moreover, there are academic clubs and cultural clubs where the students can participate based on their interests and preferences. There is a library, football fields etc.

Fees

  • 15290 euros was the annual tuition fee. (Which has gone upto around 23000 euros this year, if I am not mistaken)
  • I paid around 650 euros in rent monthly for a private studio. I received around 210 euros worth of housing allowance from the government which brought my effective rent down to 440 euros. (Please note: Housing allowance is not applicable to all houses, there are several criteria in which the house needs to fall under to be applicable)
  • Transportation and groceries would cost additional 500 euros approx.

  • The university has two campuses: Science Park (1098 XH) and Roeterseiland (1018 WB). I’ve only been to the Science Park one which i feel is a pretty decent campus with a library, a gym, and an outdoor volleyball court.
  • The gym is paid and costs around €15 a month. It’s called USC (Universum: Sport & Fitness), and it’s actually quite nice. There’s a regular workout area, a dance studio, basketball, climbing, and a few other indoor sports as well.
  • There are a bunch of events throughout the year, poster sessions, conferences, talks, and fun stuff like summer or Christmas picnics, and festival lunches or dinners. There are other extracurricular activities as well like sports tournaments, debate sessions, and gaming tournaments happening pretty often.
  • Most of this is organized or listed on the SVIA website, which is like the student association here and organizes most of these events.

Fees

  • The fees for my course at the University of Amsterdam are 16,500 EUR per year, so for the entire course, it totals 33,000 EUR.
  • The fees are charged annually, so I pay once per year for the whole year.
  • As for my monthly expenses:
  • Rent comes to about 800 EUR per month.
  • Transportation costs around 150 EUR per month.
  • Food and groceries add up to roughly 300 EUR per month.
  • But yes, if you finish your master's early you can claim a refund for the fees.

  • Different clubs and societies exist, such as study associations, sports, etc, and it's easy to join. some are paid. I am not part of any. We have an off-campus library, as there are many campuses. We have a sports facility and gym.
  • There is a cafeteria. There are no fests. only smaller events. It is a very politically active campus as well. Ultimately, you can be as much or as little involved as you want.

Fees

  • I had to pay 17000 euros at once. I pay around 500 euros for rent and an additional 500 euros for cost of living.
  • Mine is a one year course. We do not have hostels. It is not credit based. In Amsterdam, people usually cycle so transport costs are less.
  • If you live in a nearby area, you may incur train charged but that depends on where in the country you live.

  • My university has 4 campuses in the Netherlands, covering the major location of Amsterdam.
  • Almost all the facilities, including but not limited to, the library, sports arena, gym, recreational area, dance studio, art studio, and medical care are available on each and every campus.
  • The festivals, clubs and other events are organised for undergraduate students. Since I am a postgraduate student, I don't know about those students.

  • We have 2 big campuses and a few smaller ones.
  • Roeterseiland: that's our main campus and it is huge from inside. It is not at the very center, but still a very busy area. There is a library, lots of cafes and restaurants and the municipality.
  • Oudemanhuispoort: that's the main campus for com science and media students. It is right in the Amsterdam center and very beautiful. It is full of life, lots of lecture halls.
  • We also have lectures in Aula Church, Tuschinsky theatre etc.
  • USC: that's our sport campus, we have 3-4 in the city. There is swimming, tennis, badminton, everything.
  • Amsterdam is known for their club life. The university's own festivals are on the first week of university (Intreeweek). Besides that there are famous concerts happening almost every week and the Rembrandtplein (party street) is full of Bachelor students.
  • Sefa and VSAE : These are academic associations of the universtiy. They host a lot of career weeks where students often get hired on the spot. They also hold case club meetings, analytics team etc.
  • ISAA (indian student association amsterdam) : They host a lot of movie nights and Bollywood parties. it is huge and almost all indians are a part of it.
  • CREA: That's the hobbies association. Their campus is on Roeterseiland and they have a lot of opportunities for music, theatre and dance lovers.

Fees

  • Tuition: 10,000 euros.
  • Rent Accommodation: 700-1200 euros.
  • Fees are charged annually, with options to loan, scholarship etc.
  • Monthly expense: 300-500 euros (food groceries and coffee), 100-120 euros (public transport metro, tram, bus, train), 800-1200 euros (rent)
  • Students that get student accommodation save money of rent, but it is a lottery system.

Overview

Overall, an excellent experience. Certainly recommend other students join this program. I understand that placements have improved in the time being. Course is doing well. Stressful studies, but worth it because the information is directly relevant for the jobs at hand. Very useful for post study opportunities, primarily due to network effect.

Did not get to do campus life etc. There were clubs etc, but except for stand up comedy, did not get the chance. Also due to corona. Excellent library including online library of both UvA and it's partner institute, IBFD.

I did an internship in Germany during my bachelor studies. I liked the lifestyle in Europe, the scientific vigor of the UvA, and the group that I joined is world-famous for molecular simulations. It was an overall perfect fit for my personal and professional requirements.
