Campus life at University of Amsterdam

It is a very international school, and every class of mine had student from different nationalities. The best part is that the internationality is not limited to european countries, but I have made friends from all regions including Australia, Middle East, Asia, South and North America. This gives you a lot of exposure, and is a unique quality of the university.
Great facilities are provided by the university, including study spaces almost everywhere you go with multiple libraries and the option to also book tutorial rooms and lecture hall through a digital portal for collaboration.
While UvA already has 3 different campuses spread throughout the city, because of the large student size of some courses (including mine), classes and exams are held at different locations than the campuses as well. This includes giving exams in places like World Fashion Center or having lectures in famous De La Mar Theatre or Aula Church. Just the opportunity to explore and study in these beautiful buildings is really a great experience.

Dislikes

The university is not the most helpful in finding you a job after graduation or while you are studying. While they provide enough resources for you to prepare yourself for the real world and do have a dedicated career center, yet there is no job guarantee.
The housing crisis in amsterdam is one of the worst in the world. Even though UvA used to give priority to non european students by giving them priority housing in the first year, they have removed that rule now and does not offer any help apart from resources in trying to help find a room even if you get accepted.
There is very limited interaction with the professors and tutors outside of classes.

Nope - or not to my knowledge. Scholarships are not provided to bachelors students.

UvA only provides Off campus accommodation, and the one thing I dislike about the university is that they do not guarantee you housing despite there being a housing crisis in Amsterdam. for first years, they have a lottery housing system, through which one can get housing if they are lucky or otherwise find it themselves through various facebook or whatsapp groups, housing websites (kamer.nl, housinganywhere.com, room.nl) or student buildings (like OurDomain, Student Experience, The Social Hub)
Based on my experience, my only advice would be to start looking early and be active on all options of finding housing.
I found my room through kamer.nl, and I was lucky enough to get a room in a shared apartment for 700 euros, which is quite cheap for amsterdam, especially in the area I live in (old west). The average rent would be 900-1000 euros. I had a private room and balcony, shared kitchen with 3 other people and a shared bathroom. My accommodation is about 4 KMs away from the campus and I use a rented bike daily to commute which takes me about 20 minutes.
A lot of Indian students stay in Amstelveen, which is a town right above amsterdam. A lot of Indian festivals are also celebrated in this town. Despite having a different municipality, travelling to the campus from Amstelveen takes around 45 minutes by public transport, or even lesser on bike.

Emphasis on practical assignments in courses: The courses had a great balance of theory and practice. The practical assignments (e.g., implementing neural nets in numpy in the Deep Learning course) were very helpful
Good teachers: Most of the teachers were very good and were active researchers in their area.
Lots of opportunities to publish: The coursework had some courses which encourages you to publish your course projects/research. If you are interested in research, this is a great benefit.

Dislikes

Housing: It is hard to get housing near the college. This is one of the biggest issues in student life in Amsterdam
Coursework: Sometimes the coursework might feel heavy particularly in the first year. But it is manageable.
Some courses like "Knowledge representation" teach classical AI which may seem outdated.

My college provided accommodation for the first year as well as the second year to me. They generally do not help in the 2nd year, but I got lucky. Typically, use online forums/websites to get housing. Register in the first year itself.
My rent was about 500-700 euros per month. It was fully furnished with everything needed for student life.
Amsterdam does not have sufficient housing so the main challenge is finding any affordable housing. You should register asap (6 months ahead) on the housing websites to get housing.
My house was 10km away from college in the first year and just 500m away in the second year.

Faculties encourage you to do the best in academics and they are willing to help you for this.

Dislikes

Most of the courses strictly focuses on academic research than industry.
Some programs has large class sizes though this wasn't the case in my program.
Campus is not big as compared to universities of other countries like UK and US.

No, I didn’t receive any scholarship during my course. As far as I know, I am not familiar with anyone from my batch who has received any scholarship or financial aid. I’m not entirely sure about the exact numbers, but based on what I’ve seen, it didn’t seem very common in my programme.

I wasn't able to find the room initially through the student housing. So, I went to the private housing market for the room. I found the room via Kamernet.com, which is very popular in the Netherlands for finding rooms. They charge you approximately 30 euros for a monthly subscription.
The initial rent was approximately 1000 euros. There are no on-campus rooms here.
It is very hard to find room if you don't get it via Student Housing. You go to the private market and keep messaging 100 of Landlords and you hear back from only a few of them. Plus, not everyone wants to give room to international students.
My recommendation would be to be ready mentally that it is not going to be easy and if you don't find the room via Student Housing, be active every day on private housing platforms to find the room. 20 to 25 minutes by the tram from my location.

The university is scattered in two different campuses, which sometimes makes it inconvenient from a travelling perspective.
The tuition fee is high, especially this year it has risen even further.
The course duration is short (2 months or 1 month), which makes it a little rushed at times.

Scholarship

I did not have any scholarship, hence, I am unaware.

For the first year, there is an option to register with student housing, where the houses are released in batches and given out on a first-come, first-serve basis. That is how I secured my housing too, a fully private studio at 650 euros a month with 210 housing allowance from the government, which made my effective rent 440 euros a month.
In this rent, I got a cycle parking space included.
Future students should apply to the university as soon as possible to be ahead on the list.
My accommodation was 45 minutes away from the university. I travelled using public transport. There are no specific places where the Indian students stay; in each of the housing options, there were several Indian students.

Very detailed courses, and amazing faculty
Course material covers the foundations while being relevant to the current industry standards.
Option to work on projects external to the University.

Dislikes

University does not provide housing (most of the time).
Too many administrative procedures to follow for every task in the University.
Evaluation of exams is super strict and there is no sign of any lenience which is quite impractical.

Scholarship

There’s only one scholarship program at the University of Amsterdam, the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (not sure about the amount but you can find it online), but it’s super hard to get. You need to have a lot of publications to be considered, so it’s really competitive. Also, not everyone at the university is in their twenties, there are people in their thirties or even forties doing the degree, so the competition is even tougher.
None of my friends or me got the scholarship, and when you apply for it, you have to write a short paragraph in your motivation statement explaining why you are worthy of it.
I’m not sure how many students get it each year, but it’s definitely not easy to get.

I found my accommodation through Indian WhatsApp groups and Facebook. My monthly rent is 800 EUR for an individual room in a house with shared amenities.
One of the challenges with finding accommodation is that many landlords require you to be in the Netherlands for a viewing. It’s really competitive, and housing near the university is often unaffordable.
I stay in Almere, about 20 km away from the university and travel by public transport. A few students are lucky enough to find student housing, which costs around 400-500 EUR, but it’s usually far from the university, and they either cycle or use public transport.

There is an Amsterdam merit scholarship which is very competitive. I did not receive any scholarship. Dutch students have extremely subsidized fees and usually take student loans out to pay them.
I know other students funded by their home country, such as Filipinos. I do not know how many students receive scholarships each year. The Amsterdam merit scholarship covers the complete tuition fees.

There is no campus accommodation. I got my apartment through student housing. I live with a roommate 40 minutes by public transportation and 20 minutes biking away from university. i pay 500 euros a month. There is a very bad housing crisis in the Netherlands which makes finding accommodation extremely difficult but as a student, you stand a chance of getting it through UvA.

My University of Amsterdam Experience

The university gave me freedom to choose my courses (apart from the mandatory ones) wherein I had the opportunity to explore variety of streams. I chose a course with application of Data in the business world. This was very interesting and life-changing for me, as it gave a glimpse from the applicative point of view.
The courses are quite pragmatic, teaching concepts used in real world and with variety of projects. Some projects are usually introduced by blooming startups in the Netherlands, and established firms, which not only helped me with practical knowledge but also for networking.
The university also has tie-ups with many research groups to satisfy your research needs, if you want to have a gist for PhD. It helped me to secure my Thesis projects with one of the research groups.

Dislikes

The course is fast-paced, you always need to be ahead with your studies to keep on the track. It would be better to have a foundational knowledge before starting the studies.
Sometimes you feel you are left out, as the course is not theoretical. You have to work hard to keep yourself familiar with the topics you need to study about.
The university is good, but it doesn't help you with the job hunt. It do provide some networking opportunity, but securing a job is a different hustle there. From my experience, applying on your own only helps.

Scholarship

I haven't received any scholarships.
My batchmate received a scholarship with 50% fee waiver, based on the academic achievements and participation in the research work.
Usually 20% of students receive scholarships in Master in Information Studies each year, and the amount varies based on profile and academic proficiency. The referrals don't work here.

I opted for a Student Accommodation, and is off-campus. In the Netherlands, there is no ON-Campus accommodation.
I opted for housing accommodations during my application process. So, when I received my acceptance, the university introduced me to a third-party housing provider, wherein I got my room. The process was simple, but the university asked for one-time overhead fees.
I pay around 500 EUR for a room and bathroom. I share the kitchen with around 5 co-tenants.
For me, the process was smooth in securing a house there.
Yes, please go for university-guided student accommodations, as they are very clean and comparatively cheap.
It is a 30-40 minute ride through public transport. There is no specific area for Indian students, as the housing is allocated randomly based on their selected preference.

Intellectually challenging curriculum: The course that I am studying, Econometrics and Data Science, is a rigorous applied mathematic discipline that delves deep into statistics, pure mathematics, probability theory, programming and different data analyses.
Campus spread across the city: We have lectures and exams in different famous locations across Amsterdam (theatres, terminals) and it is beautiful.
International community: Amsterdam is the hub for all kinds of people, and to get like minded people is very easy.

Dislikes

Difficult STEM major: my personal course had a 50% drop out rate, making you have to study majority of the time with high pressure and pace.
Cold weather: Amsterdam can get really gloomy in the winters with short days and windy outdoors. The rain is very unpredictable too.
No campus placements: after education you have to look for internships on your own. It is not very easy to find something.

Scholarship

UvA surely provides scholarship opportunities. I have a friend who studied CBSE in Jaipur and got 100% scholarship from the state government in India.
Academic scholarships are also granted.
Moverover, UvA gives a lot of options to pay your fees in installments and gives discounts when supported with enough evidence for financial complications.
The university advisors are accessible to both students and non-students to understand this better.

Finding accommodations :
Since I live here with family that was sorted. But looking at the rental situation, we have consistently given rooms out on rent.
To get housing here it is best to apply on: Diemen-Zuid OurCampus, Student Experience, The Social hub, and university's own housings. Also join whatsapp communities where there's ample subletting options.
I recommend that you take even a place on rent for a month, if possible. Once moved here, students find it easier to look for a more permanent place.
My place is 30 mins from the campus. Most students stay between 20-40 mins. There are indian students everywhere, so not an issue.

Great course

Likes

The best program in my field + collaboration with IBFD + strong network.
The quality of teaching, the quality of assignments, the infrastructure, the library facilities, the network, the alumni reach out program, the quality of thesis mentorship etc. Overall a good experience.

Dislikes

Lack of support for placement, especially during the corona time. No response to requests for contact referrals by professors, no response on offerings to guest lectures by alumni, some professors are not flexible enough for understanding the conditions of students whole reviewing and supervising thesis

Overall, an excellent experience. Certainly recommend other students join this program. I understand that placements have improved in the time being. Course is doing well. Stressful studies, but worth it because the information is directly relevant for the jobs at hand. Very useful for post study opportunities, primarily due to network effect.

The Best Time of My Life at University of Amsterdam

No, I didn't receive any scholarship.

I did an internship in Germany during my bachelor studies. I liked the lifestyle in Europe, the scientific vigor of the UvA, and the group that I joined is world-famous for molecular simulations. It was an overall perfect fit for my personal and professional requirements.
