Education Minister, made this announcement at a recent press meet, citing spare parts of laptops are usually sourced from China and other countries. In this pandemic, there are adversities in sourcing. Hence the government choose to transfer cash rewards to students’ bank accounts directly.

As per official data released by the Department of Education, Assam, about 16,944 students scored above 75% marks. Out of them, government officials could gather bank details of only 16,648 students.

Sarma also added as the laptops are usually not equipped with the latest software, students go onto changing them. As of now, the government has plans to roll out the scheme starting September 12, 2020.  A total fund of INR 33-34 crore will be invested in it.

As per an update mentioned in the official account of Education Minister, with the MoS initiative since 2005 along with P&D and himself, Anandaram Barooah Award provides laptops to students who scored first division in HSLC Exam.

In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the DBT will reward a cash prize of INR 20,000 in lieu of disbursing laptops to all the 16,944 students within September 15, 2020.
