New Delhi: The Bengal cabinet has approved the launch of a consolidated admissions platform for undergraduate programmes at state-run institutions and universities.
Due to some technological glitches while combining colleges and universities onto one platform, the roll-out was abruptly suspended before the academic year 2022.
A trial run was conducted among the municipal colleges the previous year. The higher education government sent a circular on February 17 to inform state-run colleges and universities that centralized online admission will be implemented starting for UG degrees in 2023.
A 10-member panel was constituted for its implementation. According to the latest sources, the state cabinet, led by chief minister Mamata Banerjee, approved a proposal issued on April 17, 2023 by the higher education department.
The admission portal is expected to go live after the WBCHSE 2023 results are announced. Any government or government-aided college, unitary university, or state-aided affiliated university will be able to accept a candidate's UG applications through the portal.
However, the self-financed colleges, autonomous colleges, minority educational institutions, and training colleges will all be exempted from the rule. Earlier, in December 2022, Bratya Basu, the Education Minister, gave a hint that centralised UG admission would begin in 2023.
The cabinet's approval coincides with UGC's efforts to include new institutions and universities under the framework of the Common University Entrance Test.
