Delhi University's Online Open Book Examination (OBE) is scheduled from August 10 to August 31, 2020 amid the storm of hype created by students and teachers. Nearly 2,60,000 students are to appear in the OBE.

To ease the worry about technical glitches and the war of rich and poor raised in the light of poor connectivity and technical gadgets, DU has asked students to upload the answer sheets on the website or can even email it to the university.

However the major concern is the evaluation process and Rajdhani College Mathematics Prof. Pankaj Garg expressed his concern, "If there are around 2.4 lakh examinees and each uploads four pages answer sheets, then approx. 10 lakh answer sheets are to be compiled. There are on an average of four subjects, which further increases the count."

Teachers Concern Over Evaluation

The major hurdles forecasted in the evaluation process that can be faced by Delhi University's teachers are :

  • Not all teachers are exposed to digital evaluation
  • Unclear answer scripts due to shoddy smartphones
  • Plagiarized answer scripts
  • Repetitive answer scripts, as students can both upload and mail it to the university
  • Commencement of offline exams from September 14

Kamla Nehru College English Teacher Sanam Khanna's worry was evident with her statement, "Generally, we went to the common evaluation centers where a robust moderation was in place, especially for humanities courses where marks can be subjective. Teachers used to discuss the questions and moderate marks accordingly. However, this time, we don't know how it will take place."

Meanwhile, on August 18, 2020 Delhi HC asked the university to expedite the final year results so that higher education prospects are not affected. The Court also instructed Delhi University to conduct offline examinations for those who couldn't appear in these exams.

This has further tangled the situation, as students are confused about whether these offline exams are to improve their scores or not? And if so then the results of OBE should be declared before offline exams scheduled from September 14, 2020.
