The NMC mandates that 50 percent of seats in private and deemed medical colleges must be charged at government college fee rates. Check the state wise fee structure for NEET UG 2026 aspirants before the counselling round begins.

Government Quota Fees in Private Medical Colleges 2026: State List

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has reiterated the government quota fee rule for private and deemed medical colleges. The direction applies to the 2026-27 MBBS admission session. It flows from Section 10(1)(i) of the National Medical Commission Act 2019.

Under this rule, 50 percent of seats in every private medical college must remain affordable. Their tuition must match the government medical college fee of that state. Capitation fees in any form stay strictly banned by the regulator.

The subsidised fee applies to candidates admitted through the state government quota. Allotment happens on the state counselling portal based on NEET UG 2026 merit. The other 50 percent seats fall under management or NRI quota at higher rates.

State-Wise Government Quota Fee List 2026

The table below lists the approximate annual government quota fees for the 2026-27 session. Figures reflect state Fee Regulatory Authority notifications. College-level fees may vary slightly within each state.

State Annual Government Quota Fee (INR) Quota Name
Andhra Pradesh 16,500 Category A
Uttar Pradesh 18,000 State Quota (Unreserved)
Telangana 60,000 Category A
Karnataka 1,53,571 Government (G) Quota
Maharashtra 1,62,100 State Quota
Tamil Nadu 5,50,000 Government Quota

Southern states such as Andhra Pradesh and Telangana offer the lowest tuition slabs. Karnataka and Maharashtra sit in the middle band. Tamil Nadu charges the highest fee among the states listed above.

How Does the 50 Percent Government Quota Rule Work?

The NMC finalised the fee guidelines on 3 February 2022 after public consultation. The rule covers every private and deemed medical college recognised by the commission. Half the sanctioned MBBS seats fall under the government quota slab.

If state government quota seats are fewer than 50 percent, the shortfall is topped up by merit. These extra candidates then pay the same subsidised fee. Selection follows the NEET UG all-India merit list order.

Colleges cannot charge any hidden fee beyond the notified amount. The rule also caps tuition to the 4.5 year academic duration. This means colleges cannot bill students for the internship year.

Why Is the Fee Gap Between States So Wide?

Each state fixes its own government medical college fee independently. Southern states have kept tuition very low for decades. Their private college government quota therefore stays under one lakh per year.

Northern and western states charge higher government college fees. As a result, the linked private college quota fees run into lakhs. State Fee Regulatory Authorities issue the final approved figures for each session.

Compliance across states has been uneven since the 2022 rollout. Some private colleges initially refused to lower fees for the 50 percent quota. State authorities have since issued firm orders backing the NMC directive.

Which Documents Are Needed for Government Quota Admission?

Candidates must upload key documents on the state counselling portal. These prove eligibility for the government quota fee slab. Missing any document can lead to seat cancellation during verification.

  • NEET UG 2026 rank card and admit card
  • Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets and certificates
  • Domicile certificate of the state
  • Category or reservation certificate where applicable
  • Aadhaar card and passport-size photographs
  • Government-issued photo ID for identity verification
Why This Matters

A student admitted under the government quota in a private college can save over one crore rupees. A five-year MBBS under management quota may cost 60 lakh to 1.25 crore in total. The same seat under government quota often costs under ten lakh in southern states.
