IIM Calcutta Appointed Prof Sahadeb Sarkar as New Director; Check Details Here

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM Calcutta) has appointed Sahadeb Sarkar as its new director. On the other hand, the institute has accepted the resignation of Uttam Kumar Sarkar as Director with immediate effect.

The Board of Governors of the IIM Calcutta unanimously chose Sahadeb Sarkar to be the next director. Sarkar has been associated with the institute for numerous years, undertaking various administrative roles.

IIM Calcutta Official Statement

According to the official statement, “Through his long tenure of service, Sahadeb Sarkar knows IIM Calcutta intimately: its history, culture and the aspirations of its large body of faculty, students, alumni, staff, Board, and all stakeholders”.

“He articulated in the clearest terms an understanding of “what needs to be done and how it must be done” to help IIM Calcutta achieve its global aspirations. To this end, he presented a compelling and pragmatic agenda for his term as Director. He appreciates and understands the complexities of the role and the expectations”, the statement added.

Prof Sahadeb Sarkar Education Background

Sahadeb Sarkar did his PhD from the Department of Statistics, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, USA between 1986 - 1990. Before this, he completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s in statistics from IIM Calcutta.

In addition to teaching subjects such as statistics, finance, and basic mathematics at IIM Calcutta, Sarkar has earned recognition with the 23rd and 17th Dewang Mehta Business School awards for "Best Teacher in Operations Management" in November 2015 and November 2009, respectively. 

According to reports, Ex-Director Uttam Kumar Sarkar will continue as a Professor in the Management Information Systems Department of the institute. Notably, he is the second director to resign before completing a five-year term.
