New Delhi: The fifth Aditya-L1 workshop was recently conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK). This three-day event was a collaborative effort between the Department of Physics at IIT Kanpur and the Aditya-L1 Support Cell at the Aryabhatta Observational Science Research Institute (ARIES) in Nainital.
A total of 50 students participated in this workshop, with 30 hailing from external institutions and 20 representing IIT Kanpur and nearby universities. The selection of these students was determined by their exceptional academic achievements in their respective courses.
The primary objective of this workshop was to provide training to carefully chosen final-year UG, MSc, and PhD students in harnessing forthcoming satellite data.
During the second day of the workshop, special attention was devoted to unveiling the observational aspects associated with the Sun. This segment encompassed the methodologies employed by scientists to observe diverse solar phenomena, including solar flares, solar wind, solar coronal mass ejections, and solar energetic particles.
Participants had the chance for practical, hands-on experience with the utilization of the magnetohydrodynamic code known as PLUTO. This numerical code, designed for computational astrophysics, serves as a valuable tool for comprehending the origins of solar storms.

According to the IIT Kanpur's official notice, the workshop attendees were also treated to visits to two important research facilities within the Department of Physics. The first stop was the Plasma laboratory under the guidance of Prof. Sudeep Bhattacharjee, offering valuable insights into the generation and confinement of plasma in a controlled laboratory setting.
The visit allowed participants to gain a tangible understanding of what plasma, as a fundamental component of the Sun, might resemble.
Additionally, participants had the opportunity to explore the Accelerator Laboratory, led by Prof. Aditya Kelkar, within the Department of Physics, where they delved into the intricacies of particle acceleration, which mimics the continuous process occurring within the Sun.
The third day of the workshop was devoted to a deep dive into the Aditya-L1 mission. After acquiring both theoretical knowledge and observational insights, participants were given the chance to appreciate the mission's complexity, its payloads, and its significant role in studying the Sun, its atmosphere, and its impact on Earth.
Meanwhile, Aditya-L1 stands as an important mission led by ISRO, marking India's inaugural endeavor to explore and research the Sun from close proximity.
