To tackle student stress and enhance well-being, IIT Madras Counsellors visit every hostel and department at fixed times to check and talk to students and ensure their mental well-being.

New Delhi: IIT Madras has planned to mitigate stress among students and prevent suicides by introducing counseling for parents and assessing the mental well-being of students as part of the admission process.
Additionally, the IIT Madras also plans to include easing mandatory attendance requirements to alleviate stress for BTech students. The institute has also announced its intention to conduct retests for students who miss exams, aiming to reduce the burden on undergraduate engineering students.

How does IIT Madras Plan to Reduce Stress and Assess Mental Health among Students?
Discussing the institute's approach to reducing student stress, Professor Sathyanarayana N Gummadi, Dean (Students) at IIT Madras faculty, stated that last year, the National Health Authority conducted a comprehensive mental wellness screening program. A similar initiative will be conducted annually, including for newly admitted students.
The professor also mentioned that counselors are currently visiting each hostel and department at scheduled times to engage with and support students.
Upon the approval of a proposal, the board of governors at the institute has sanctioned the appointment of Dr. Tilakavathi as the student ombudsman. A time-bound grievance redressal mechanism has also been established said the IIT Madras Professor.
Furthermore, an anonymous suggestion box has been installed at the administration office of IIT Madras, providing students with a direct channel to lodge grievances with the institute's director.
In an effort to enhance mental health among students, IIT Madras has initiated a wellness session series conducted earlier this year with the support of the National Health Mission, The Department of Health and Family Welfare, and the Tamil Nadu government.
Meanwhile, this year has seen the unfortunate loss of at least seven students from IITs across the country to suicide, with IIT Madras experiencing four such tragedies in 2023 due to which such measures have been taken.
