Three Indian Institutes of Technology collaborated with the Centre for Development in Advanced Computing (C-DAC) to implement high-technology computing facilities in the institutes for research and development work.
IITs and C-DAC signed the agreement in the presence of Sanjay Dhotre, the Union Minister of State for Education, Communication, Electronics, and Information Technology. Professor Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary of, Department of Science and Technology was also present in the meeting.
The tie-up was under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) introduced in 2015 to improve global competitiveness as well as gain self-reliance in the supercomputing technology.
The objective behind the launch was also to develop facilities to promote research in the discipline. NSM further plans to install all the supercomputers over 2022.

The official statement stated that C-DAC would fix the supercomputing facility implementing the building approach of NSM in the three IITs. This project will help to provide the facility with the required data center space, power with backup, cooling, etc.
The agreement between C-DAC and IIT Roorkee was registered between the Director of the institute Dr. Hemant Darbari, Director General on the side of CDAC, and Professor Ajit K. Chaturvedi, on behalf of IIT Roorkee.
The institute statement mentioned that the reason behind this agreement is to secure the IIT Roorkee’s supply, installation, commissioning, and application of state-of-the-art HPC facilities as well as the data center ecosystem.
The agreement sanctioned is valid for up to five years and can be further extended by mutual agreement. The National Supercomputing Mission- a joint initiative of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) will finance the act.
Around Rs 17 crore, the worth of the supercomputing facility for research and development activities at the institute will be formed as stated in the agreement.
As per the agreement, IIT Roorkee will commit towards the NSM in the domain of application and system software environment, increasing capacity and work-force training needed for the Supercomputing Research across the country.
As a part of this initiative, it will be compulsory to provide the HPC facility commissioned for academic and research purposes to the faculty and students.
Mr. Dhotre, during the virtual event, said, “The National Supercomputing Mission is an important initiative of the Government of India. C-DAC along with the IISc, IITs, and, NITs, is playing an eminent role in achieving the goal of Digital India and Atmanirbhar Bharat's mission. These MoUs will help in increasing India's global relevance in the field of Supercomputing. I congratulate C-DAC and partner Institutes for this milestone.”
An IIT Guwahati statement also stated that the new Supercomputer launched by C-DAC at IIT Guwahati with 650 TFLOPS would be more dynamic and technologically superior functioning.
IIT Hyderabad will also benefit from the MoU since it will facilitate researchers at the institute to conduct extensive research in several disciplines and branches. This will in turn help the country develop in the field of supercomputing and come at par with more technologically developed countries.
It will be crucial in the domain of scientific and engineering applications as mentioned below;

- Oil and gas exploration
- Molecular modeling
- Weather forecasting
- Spacecraft aerodynamics
- Computational systems biology
- Detonation simulations
- Handling of large databases using Artificial intelligence models
Moreover, IIT Guwahati will also conduct training courses to promote the use and applications of supercomputers. The other important missions of the Government of India will also be popularized in the northeastern region.
