Schools Reopening: Assam to Review Infection Rate Before Reopening Schools for Classes 6–8

The Assam Government has ordered the reopening of the school for classes 9 to 12 from September 21, 2020.

The State Education Department mentioned that Schools will not be opened anytime soon for classes below 6.

The Union Education Ministry had already released a detailed guideline for the reopening of schools on October 15, 2020.

The State Government has set up a six-member committee to monitor the ground situation in all the schools every 15 days. Check Guidelines Here

The committee was headed by the commissioner of all the districts in the state.

The State Education Department requested the district Education authorities to provide a report on COVID 19 affected students of classes 9 to 12 who were voluntarily attending classes.

The responsibility of the committee is to ensure the safe function of the reopened schools in the current pandemic situation.

A senior official of the State Education Department said,” Today (Tuesday), we have received the standard operating procedure (SOP) from the department of school education under the Union Education Ministry. Based on this SOP and considering the local conditions in Assam, another SOP will be formulated for the state as the State Education Department is pondering upon reopening classes for students of 6 to 8. But two aspects – turnout and COVID infection among students, teachers, and non-teaching staff – are going to be crucial in making this decision. The Education Minister’s go-ahead is being awaited in this regard.”

The official also stated that they are not going to bother about the low turnout because anyway schools and colleges will be opened to provide guidance for online classes.

But before a decision on reopening of school for other classes is taken, the number of infected cases should be in limit.

The Education Department has also asked the District Education authorities to report the details of the schools closed after September 21, 2020, because of the detection of COVID 19 infection among students and teachers.

The Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that they were planning on how to bring the final year students to classes.

 The new protocol would be published between October 15 and 20 by the state government. It would come into effect from November 1, 2020.

He also mentioned that classes from standard 6 might open along with colleges but the hostels are not allowed to open yet.
