Candidates now have the opportunity to enroll online on the government-provided education portal. The noteworthy aspect of this platform is the availability of high-quality online education at no charge in various streams such as AI, ML, Data Science, etc.
Known as Swayam, the education portal was created by the Central Government's Ministry of Human Resource Development. With 1185 courses offered by 203 institutes, the portal was officially launched in 2017. Providing free education from the 9th class to post-graduation, candidates completing a course undergo examinations by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for approximately 390 courses. The certificates are provided to the candidates after they qualify for the examinations. Recently, Delhi University also said to Offer 20% of Courses Online via the SWAYAM Portal.
The key agencies overseeing this portal include the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), University Grants Commission (UGC), Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC) for undergraduate courses, and IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National University) for school students. Management studies fall under the purview of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore, while the National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR) oversees the teacher training program.
According to recent reports, approximately 3.9 crore individuals have registered on this portal, with 39.9 lakh students enrolling for examinations and 25.2 candidates obtaining certificates upon course completion.
During the 2020 pandemic, there was a notable surge in candidate registrations. The data indicates a remarkable 647% increase in 2019, followed by a 181% rise in 2021. In 2022, there was a 28% increase, and the last reported year, 2023, saw a significant 204% increase.
