New Delhi: As per the latest updates, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has published a preliminary curriculum and credit framework for postgraduate programs, which suggests that these advanced courses will be completed in a period of one year.

As per UGC, the one-year PG program is designed to ensure that students gain a well-rounded and focused education in their chosen field of study. It will boost the quality and relevance of postgraduate education in line with modern educational requirements.

This initial draft offers a comprehensive outline for the structure and curriculum of one-year postgraduate programs, demonstrating the UGC's commitment to developing a simpler and more effective educational experience for students.

Master's Program Credit Requirements and Eligibility Criteria

Check the recommended credit requirements and eligibility criteria for the UGC Master’s program below:

For admission to a 1-year/2-semester Master's program (at level 6.5 of NHEQF): A bachelor's degree with Honours or Honours with Research, encompassing a minimum of 160 credits is required.

For admission to a 2-year/4-semester Master's program (at level 6.5 of NHEQF): A 3-year/6-semester bachelor's degree with a minimum of 120 credits is required.

To qualify for a 2-year/4-semester Master's program (at level 7 of NHEQF): A 4-year Bachelor's degree (e.g., B.E., B.Tech., etc.) with a minimum of 160 credits is required.

Informing about the PG Program, the UGC letter reads, “The National Education Policy 2020 recommends different designs of master’s programs with entry & exit facilities and greater emphasis on research. In accordance with the policy, UGC has prepared draft Guidelines on Curriculum and Credit Framework for Postgraduate programs”.

Highlights of UGC's 1-Year Postgraduate Programs

Following the UGC proposed regulations, candidates who successfully complete a four-year bachelor's program with honours or honours with research will be eligible to apply for admission to a one-year master's program.

In addition, candidates will also have the option to pursue a five-year integrated program which includes both bachelor's and master's degrees. They will have the flexibility to choose different fields of study aligned with their interests.

They will additionally have the option to choose between modes of learning, such as offline, Open and Distance Learning (ODL), online learning, and hybrid learning models. With this, they will customise their educational experience and adapt to a variety of learning environments.
