Entrance Preview

CAT, My score was around 1850. I selected as it was Govt College and in 1998, it was quite renowned for its good results. Admission was through PTU conuselling at jalandhar.

Course Curriculum Overview

3.5

Course Curriculum was as prescribed by Punjab Technical university. But now after so many years i realised, it could have been better to cater industrial needs and develop students in way to learn latest technological updates instead studying theories only.

Internships Opportunities

At that time no internship was provided to any one. There was no stipend. That time it was only computer related companies who visited for recruitment. Like compaq from chandigarh. They used to hire computer engineering student. There was no placement for other disciplines.

Placement Experience

1

Since only Compaq used to come for placement for computer engineering students. Normally they hire around 20 to 30 students every year. There was hardly any focus and effort reflected to get place students of other disciplines. Though at the end of our course, few talks were initiated to look for placement for other students.

College Events

3.5

There was some technical events, fest, friendship days, chocolate day etc were being celebrated. Some inter college festivals were also organised including sports meet. Though it happened after 2000 after change on principal. At certain time due to some specific rules by principal, girls were restricted to wear jeans and forced to wear only suit salwar. They were not allowed to hangout with boys after college hours and it was noticed by teachers to complaint to principal. But this all happened for few months only.

Fee Structure And Facilities

Fee was very nominal. It was around Rs.7500 per semester excluding hostel fee of Rs 1500. There were no other regular expenses. Food was extra at nominal rate of Rs 30 per diet. It was co-operative mess so students were involved in managing mess services. Cost was carefully monitored along with food quality.

Fees and Financial Aid

That time no scholarships or loan facilities were offered by college. Students could take education loans from banks only.

Campus Life

4

Campus life was normally not much exciting like in today's college. Gender ratio wise, it was depending on discipline in which you are studying. Like in computer Engineering it was around 60:40 (boys:girls) whereas in chemical it was around 65:35. For other branches it was quiet less may be around 80:20 or in our it was only 1 girl in batch of 60.

Hostel Facilities

3

College was have 3 hostels for boys and 1 hostel for girls. The capacity was sufficient to cater student needs. Hardly anybody was left who did not get room. Two hostels with 3 tier and one hostel was single student per room. Normally single student per room was given to 4th year students and if rooms left then few 3rd year student can avail those rooms. Food was of reasonable quality.

Alumni/Alumna

No help was available from any senior students. In fact there was no mechanism for formal interaction once anybody left college after graduation.

Exam Structure

Since focus was on studies so lecturers, tutorial and lab were very common and part of day to day life. Load of exams was limited to internal sessional and external semester university exams only. I will not say it was hectic but it was normal. One was not feeling pressure of exams and burden of over labs. Whatever was there was fun as we were learning.

Faculty

3.5

Faculty was quite competent and supportive. There focus was to teach to the best possible way. They were normally available whenever students wish to discuss. Attitude was positive and they never believed in skipping lecturers. Lab faculty was also competent to support students in various practically.

Placement Experience:

Placements are not that good. Although companies come, there is a lack of mass recruiters or reputed organizations. One has to grind hard here for placements. If you're a CS student, you will have to face immense competition here. As for core branches, placements are severely dry. Students gets eligible in 4th year onwards for placements. Some of recruiters here are Trident, TCS, Reliance, Sonalika and other few. Every company offers around 10-15 selected students for a job. Highest package ever was 15LPA and average is 3.2LPA. Percentage placed is only around 15% here. My plans after the degree are to apply for govt exams.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The interest in coding influenced me to choose this subject and course. The curriculum gets me ready for a 9-5 job which kind of gets hectic. The teachers could maybe schedule classes to give the students time to study what they want to and if they wish to do a course outside the university they have the time to do so rather than just going by the university curriculum
