Sindhi College, B.Com, Commerce Specialisation
Reviewed on Nov 1, 2018

Remarks

Overall, college was affordable on the pocket, despite being far away from city center. College was well connected to various parts of the city by bus, and other means.

Entrance Preview

I wanted to choose commerce, as that was my stream in XII. One of my school teachers had promised to get me into Vaishnav on sports quota but that fell through at the last minute leaving me very few options. Tried in Vivekananda, which had a cut-off of 97% for FC. Other options were all charging management quota (upto 35k), and we couldn't afford it, hence had to settle for what was available at that time. Sindhi college was a newly set up college, and not many had heard of it at that time. The admission process was simple - apply, pay fees, and get admission card. Fees was very affordable, no donation, and plenty of seats when I'd applied.

Course Curriculum Overview

1.5

The course curriculum was at best average in comparison to other colleges. While the college, per se was attached to madras university, I would say the curriculum covered bare essentials with emplasis on commerce & accountancy, which was taught well by a part-time professor (who used to visit from a different college)

Internships Opportunities

I dont recollect the college offering internship opportunities for students. During my 3 years of studying, there was all but one organization that had offered internship to a student doing BBA (bachelors of business administration).

Placement Experience

1.5

I dont recollect the college offering placement or job opportunities for students. During my 3 years of studying, there was all but one organization that had offered a job to a student doing BBA (bachelors of business administration). Things may have changed now, and I havent really bothered to check. Response is based on my personal experience in the past, and is in no way derogatory to the college administration/management capabilities in offering such a facility.

College Events

1.5

The college celebrated few events like Independence day, Republic day, college sports day, cultural fest. Dignitaries attended flag hoisting during Independence day & Republic day functions, college sports day was organized at police grounds in Egmore (every year). Top cops, celebrities, administrative officers were invited for the function.

Fee Structure And Facilities

One of the most important factor for choosing this college was the fee structure on offer. Total fees for the entire course was Rs.15000 approximately. College did not charge any deposit, capitation fees, donation. Since the college was new, a nominal amount was collected from students as building fees. Overall the fee structure was very affordable.

Fees and Financial Aid

Not that I'm aware off - college did not offer scholarship or loan facility to students for payment of fees. Monthly/Quarterly installment was available, which was anyway offered by most colleges. Things may have changed now, and I havent really bothered to check. Response is based on my personal experience in the past, and is in no way derogatory to the college administration/management capabilities in offering such a facility.

Campus Life

1.5

Campus life was average. During the initial years of the college, it was a college only for men, much later they started offering co-education. I have never used lab facilities of the college, hence unable to comment. Sporting facilities were average. We used the adjoining open ground as play ground - only cricket & football options were available for students. Inter-collegiate debate competitions did take place. Things may have changed now, and I havent really bothered to check. Response is based on my personal experience in the past, and is in no way derogatory to the college administration/management capabilities in offering such a facility.

Hostel Facilities

1.5

The college did not offer any hostel facilities, there were no outstation students who came on-board. Students usually came from near-by villages like Thirverkadu, Numbal, Ponamalee etc. The college was situated at an approximate distance of 20 Km from the city center, however had bus services from all parts of the city. This may have been the reason why management decided against installing hostel facilities. Mess food was average.

Alumni/Alumna

There is no formal alumni network present. Since I graduated in 2000, there has been no communication of any kind with the college, neither has college tried to reach out to me. Some of us who studied together have formed our own informal network, and that's it.

Exam Structure

Examination was semester based like all colleges Semesters were typically annual, and examination used to be conducted on annual basis only. Structure of exams was written theory. Things may have changed now, and I havent really bothered to check. Response is based on my personal experience in the past, and is in no way derogatory to the college administration/management capabilities in offering such a facility.

Admission

Sindhi college was a newly set up college, and not many had heard of it at that time. The admission process was simple - apply, pay fees, and get admission card. Fees was very affordable, no donation, and plenty of seats when I'd applied. Sindhi college had their office in Egmore, we came to know of this college through a common friend, and approached them directly. Bought the application form, filled it, and filed it then & there. Fees structure was fair, so we went with it.

Faculty

1.5

Below average. Most professors were below average, since the college was virtually unknown then. Also, since the college was outside the city - 20 KM from city center not many people were willing to travel that far to teach. With the exception of one part-time professor who taught commerce & accountancy, others failed to inspire.
