Australia Awards Scholarship includes esteemed international fellowship grants and scholarships providing future leaders with an opportunity to pursue higher education, professional development, and research in Australia. They offer students from the participating countries a chance to undertake full-time UG or PG education at the associated technical and further education (TAFE) institutions and Australian universities.

Applicants must be a student of and nominated by one of the target institutions. Also, they will have to sign a contract with the Commonwealth of Australia confirming their compliance with the Australia Awards Scholarship’s conditions. These scholarships last for the minimum duration required to complete the educational program, which includes any necessary preparatory training.

Australia Awards Scholarship Eligible Courses/Degrees

The types of academic programs offered to an applicant may vary as per the applicant’s country. Australia Awards Scholarship program is available for the following type of courses:

  • Bachelor’s degree

The maximum time permitted for a bachelor’s degree scholarship is four years. Double bachelor’s degrees are allowed as long as both are incorporated in the original offer and can be finished within four years. Institutions may invite an outstanding awardee to take part in an Honours program only after seeking approval from Programme Areas three months before the scholarship completion date.

  • Master’s degree

The maximum time permitted for a master’s degree scholarship is two years. Double master’s degrees are allowed as long as both are incorporated in the original offer and can be finished within two years.

  • Doctoral (Ph.D.) degree

The maximum time permitted for a Ph.D. scholarship is four years.

  • Articulated study programs

Articulated study programs include vocational education and training (VET) courses amongst others. These programs combine a higher and lower level course, resulting in the award of higher qualification. For instance, a master’s resulting directly into a Ph.D. or a graduate diploma resulting directly into a master’s.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for receiving an Australia Awards Scholarship, candidates must fulfill the following requirements: 

  • Must be at least 18 years old on February 1 of the scholarship’s commencement year.
  • Must hold the citizenship of a participating country and should be residing in their country at the time of application.
    • Must not be an Australian citizen, hold a permanent residency or be applying for a permanent visa.
    • Must not be engaged or married to a person who has or is eligible for, New Zealand or Australian permanent residency.
    • Residents of Niue, Tokelau or Cook Islands are eligible but must apply for a student visa. 
  • Must be proficient in English with a minimum overall score of 
    • 6.5 in IELTS (Academic)
    • 79 in online-based TOEFL 
    • 58 in PTE (Academic)
  • Must not have previously been a recipient of an Australia Award Scholarship.
    • unless the applicant has lived outside Australia for double the period of staying in Australia.
  • Must fulfill any specific criteria set by the government of the applicant’s country or the Programme Area. 
  • Must meet the admission eligibility criteria of the host institution.
    • Program Areas will withdraw the award offer if a recipient does not fulfill the admission criteria of the institution. 
  • Must be able to fulfill all visa requirements of the Department of Home Affairs. 
  • Must not apply for a scholarship for a program at an academic level which is less than what they have already completed.
    • For instance, an applicant who holds a Ph.D. cannot apply for a master’s scholarship.
  • Must notify the Program Area if they have any relationship or connection with a staff member or equivalent.

The closing and opening dates for the Australia Awards Scholarship application vary according to the participating country.


Application Process

To apply for the Australia Awards Scholarship, students must complete the following steps:

Step 1: Student has to choose their country and award type to check whether they are eligible for the award. 

Step 2: Once eligibility is established, students must review the course eligibility criteria.

Step 3: Students can register and complete their online application form for Australian Awards.

Documents Required

Following are the documents required for the Australia Awards Scholarship:

  • Original graduation degree certificate’s certified copy and the degree’s certified translation, in case it is not in English.
  • Original academic transcript’s certified copy and its certified translation, in case it is not in English.
  • A citizenship document’s certified copy (such as national identity card or passport).
  • Original birth certificate’s certified copy and its certified translation, in case it is not in English.
  • A curriculum vitae (CV) concisely detailing work history, responsibilities and research experience.
  • A minimum of one academic referee report and one other referee report is required. Also, a Ph.D. or a master’s degree by research applicants are required to provide two academic referee reports.
  • Original English language test (TOEFL or IELTS) result certificate’s certified copy (The certificate must be valid till the 1st of January of the scholarship’s commencement year).
  • Ph.D. candidates have to provide evidence (e-mail or letter communication) that a potential supervisor has granted in-principle support to the candidate for his/her research topic.

Selection Process

All applications submitted for the Australia Awards Scholarship are evaluated based on merit. Program Areas administer the selection process in various countries or regions and the selection process varies according to the region/country. Each participating country produces a list of shortlisted applicants as per the number of scholarships available for the region.

All the shortlisted students are invited for an interview session which may include other activities like group participation sessions to measure the suitability of applicants.

After finalizing the selection, Program Areas request placements for selected candidates at their first preference course and institution. Placement requests are reviewed by institutions based on merit. An institution processes a placement offer only if the candidate fulfills its admission eligibility criteria (including English language requirements) and is considered capable of successfully finishing the nominated course within the decided period. 

The applicants of the Australia Awards Scholarship are informed of the results by August 1 of the year of application. Selected applicants are awarded the scholarship after they have signed the contract with the Commonwealth of Australia once an Australian university has issued a placement offer.

  • Introductory Academic Program (IAP): A mandatory program that covers information on studying and living in Australia undertaken before the start of formal studies
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) provided for the award’s duration to cover the recipient’s basic medical costs (excluding pre-existing conditions)
  • Pre-course English (PCE) fees will be provided in case it is deemed necessary for the recipient to take training in English 
  • Supplementary educational support may be offered to improve scholars’ academic experience or ensure their academic success 
  • Research and master’s degree students, whose coursework includes a research component in which fieldwork is mandatory, may be provided with facilities to conduct fieldwork
