Royal College of Music Application Deadlines

Every RCM application for taught programmes goes through UCAS Conservatoires, a UK-wide central portal that Indian applicants cannot bypass with a direct RCM form. Doctoral candidates are the exception and apply through the separate Get Acceptd portal. Dates below are per the official RCM application timeline for September 2027 entry.

Primary intake: RCM runs a single annual September intake, and every programme opens here. There is no January or spring start for BMus, MMus, MPerf or MSc.

Insider note: The 1 October 2026 music deadline is a hard UCAS Conservatoires cutoff at 18:00 UK time. Auditions in India are not offered, so Indian applicants pick London, an East-Asia venue, or a video audition (video files due by 26 October 2026).

RCM Eligibility for Indian Students

Eligibility at Royal College of Music has three parts that all Indian applicants must satisfy: an academic floor, an English language floor, and a passed audition or portfolio. The academic floor is unusually low for a UK top-tier institution because the audition carries almost the full weight of the decision.

• UG general entry (BMus): two A-levels at grade E or equivalent, or Class XII around 55 to 65 percent.
• Alternative UG qualifications: IB minimum 24 points, BTEC Level 3, RSL Level 3 in music, Scottish Highers or Cambridge Pre-U.
• PG general entry: a Bachelor’s degree, typically a 2:1 (around 60 percent Indian) in music or a related field.
• MSc Performance Science entry: Bachelor’s at 2:1 in music, performing arts, psychology, education, sociology or biology.
• Audition: mandatory for every performance programme. Composers submit a portfolio and attend an interview.

English language floor. RCM sets two bands depending on programme. CEFR B2 (equivalent to IELTS 5.5 in all four components) is required for BMus, Graduate Diploma in Vocal Performance, MPerf, MComp, Artist Diploma in Performance, Composition and Opera. CEFR C1 (equivalent to IELTS 7.0 overall with 5.5 per component) is required for MMus in Performance, MMus in Composition, MSc Performance Science, Artist Diploma in Conducting and PhD. RCM also accepts TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge English C1/C2 Advanced and Duolingo at published equivalents. IELTS One Skill Retake is the only single-component retake path accepted.

Royal College of Music IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

RCM does not treat an Indian passport as an English-native passport, so the 19-country passport waiver does not apply to Indian applicants. Two waivers are open to Indians in practice. First, if you have already completed a Bachelor’s degree or above at a university in the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand or another majority-English country, that degree waives the IELTS. Second, a GCSE grade 4 or higher, or an A-Level grade E or higher, in English Language or Literature waives the B2 requirement; grade 6 or higher waives C1. An Indian Class XII English score does not, on its own, meet the RCM waiver criteria and IELTS or an equivalent test is expected.

Royal College of Music Postgraduate Programs

Postgraduate options at RCM span two-year Master’s degrees, one-year fast-track MMus routes, Graduate Diploma and Artist Diploma pathways and the MSc in Performance Science. Base tuition for Overseas taught PG programmes in 2026/27 ranges from £21,684 (INR 28.12 Lakhs) for the MSc up to £40,090 (INR 51.98 Lakhs) for the 12-month fast-track MMus. RCM Bachelor of Music BMus Program

The Bachelor of Music (BMus) is the only undergraduate degree at Royal College of Music. It is a four-year full-time programme taught across nine faculties covering brass, composition, historical performance, keyboard, strings, vocal and opera, woodwind, percussion and conducting. The academic floor is low by UK-university standards because the audition is the decisive filter, and the RCM will accept Indian Class XII scores in the 55 to 65 percent band as long as the audition passes.

BMus base tuition for Overseas students in 2026/27 is £31,300 (INR 40.59 Lakhs) per year for years 1 to 3, and £30,440 (INR 39.47 Lakhs) for year 4. The audition lasts around 15 to 20 minutes for most instruments, and the RCM offers London auditions in November to December 2026, plus overseas auditions in Sydney, Beijing, Shanghai, Seoul, Tokyo (1 October deadline) and Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, New York, Toronto (1 November deadline). A pre-recorded video audition is a fully accepted alternative for Indian applicants who cannot travel.

Royal College of Music PhD and Doctoral Program

The RCM Doctoral programme (PhD) runs 3 to 4 years full-time or 6 or more years part-time. It sits on a separate application track from every taught programme and does not use UCAS Conservatoires. The application deadline for September 2027 entry is 13 January 2027, and applications go through the Get Acceptd portal with a £100 (INR 12,967) processing fee.

Royal College of Music PhD Entry Requirements

You need a Master’s degree in music or a closely related field, or evidence of equivalent research and performance experience, and you must submit a research proposal that fits an available RCM supervisor. English language floor is IELTS 7.0 overall with 5.5 per component (CEFR C1). A short interview and, for performance-based research, a live or recorded performance are standard.

Royal College of Music PhD Funding and Duration

Base Overseas tuition for the PhD in 2026/27 is £21,684 (INR 28.12 Lakhs) per year full-time and £11,440 (INR 14.83 Lakhs) part-time, with a fee-reduced writing-up year at £1,541 (INR 1,99,822). Continuing Overseas Doctoral students who reach year 4 or beyond in 2026/27 pay £21,268 (INR 27.58 Lakhs). Reality check: RCM PhD offers are supervisor-driven. Do not apply without contacting a prospective supervisor first to check research fit; a strong proposal with no supervisor match is normally rejected.

RCM Application Process via UCAS Conservatoires

The RCM application flow is UCAS-driven for BMus, MMus, MPerf, MComp, GradDip, Artist Diploma and MSc Performance Science. Doctoral applicants use the separate Get Acceptd portal. Below are the steps in order for the September 2027 sitting.

1. Register on UCAS Conservatoires, which opened 7 July 2026 for the 2027 entry cycle, and create your applicant hub.
2. Select up to six RCM programme choices, add your audition venue and, for composers, upload the pre-screening portfolio.
3. Complete the three UCAS personal statement questions and add two referee contacts.
4. Pay the UCAS Conservatoires application fee of £34.50 (INR 4,474) plus the RCM audition or course fee: £115 (INR 14,912) for Performance and Composition, £165 (INR 21,396) for Joint Principal Study, £50 (INR 6,484) for MSc Performance Science and £100 (INR 12,967) for Doctoral on Get Acceptd.
5. Submit the video audition file by 26 October 2026 if you opt for a video assessment instead of a live venue.
6. Attend the audition in London (November to December 2026) or at your booked overseas venue.
7. Await your RCM decision through UCAS Track or Get Acceptd.

Fee waivers exist for qualifying UK residents only, so Indian applicants pay both charges in full. Only the audition or portfolio outcome drives the offer decision; the personal statement plays a supporting role.

Royal College of Music Admission Decisions

Offers at Royal College of Music typically arrive on UCAS Track within four to eight weeks of the audition. Royal College of Music Acceptance Rate

RCM allocates one-to-one principal-study teaching for every enrolled student, and the number of hours available with each senior tutor is the real cap on cohort size. 2026 update: The UK government has proposed an Overseas tuition levy for future cycles. If introduced, it may be reflected in Overseas fees for years after 2026/27, so budget an extra 2 to 7 percent per year of study.
