University of Leicester Eligibility for Indian Students

Leicester assesses Indian applicants on Class XII scores for undergraduate entry and bachelor’s classification for postgraduate entry. English proficiency is verified through a standardised test unless a recognised waiver applies. Individual course pages state the specific floor for each program.

University of Leicester Academic Requirements

  • UG general entry: Class XII 70 to 80 percent in top four to five subjects (CBSE, ISC, or State Boards).
  • UG Medicine (MBChB): Class XII 85 percent plus with Biology, Chemistry, and typically Mathematics or Physics.
  • PG taught entry: Bachelor’s degree with 55 to 60 percent (UK 2:1 equivalent).
  • PG business or humanities: Some programs require 60 to 65 percent (UK high 2:1) plus relevant experience.
  • Foundation Year (International): Class XII 55 to 65 percent plus IELTS 5.0.

What English Tests Does University of Leicester Accept?

Leicester accepts four major English proficiency tests, with course-specific minimums verified from the official Leicester equivalent qualifications page. Higher floors apply to Medicine, Clinical Science, and select business programs.

Test results must have been taken within the past two years. Medicine and Clinical Sciences require IELTS 7.0 across all bands.

University of Leicester IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

Leicester grants an English test waiver to Indian applicants who have completed an undergraduate degree in English at a recognised Indian university. Confirmed pathways include:

  • Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs)
  • University of Delhi, University of Madras, and University of Mumbai
  • Anna University, Bangalore University, and Pune University
  • English-medium Class XII with high subject scores may qualify for UG waiver on a case-by-case basis

Insider note: The waiver is discretionary and course-specific. Send scanned transcripts and a medium-of-instruction certificate at application, and the admissions team decides case by case.

University of Leicester MBA for Indian Students

The Leicester School of Business offers the MBA primarily through a distance-learning (DL) route rather than as a full-time on-campus program. For Indian applicants who want a UK Student Route visa, note that the distance-learning MBA does not sponsor visas. It is designed for working professionals studying from home.

University of Leicester MBA Entry Requirements

  • Academic (recommended): Second-class or above bachelor’s honours degree from a recognised institution (~55 percent plus Indian bachelor’s).
  • Postgraduate Diploma: A recognised professional PG Diploma may substitute for the honours degree.
  • Work experience: Relevant post-degree experience strengthens the application, particularly for candidates without a matching bachelor’s.
  • English: IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0.
  • GMAT or GRE: Not required by Leicester’s MBA route.

University of Leicester MBA Interview and Rounds

Leicester does not run fixed application rounds for the distance-learning MBA. Applications are processed on a rolling basis with January, April, July, and October start options. Formal interviews are not standard, though the School of Business may request a video conversation with strong candidates. Review the funding options for Indian students before committing to the deposit.

Planning note: The distance-learning MBA suits working professionals in India seeking a UK-recognised degree without relocating. It does not carry visa sponsorship or campus access.

University of Leicester Application Process for Indian Students

Leicester uses two distinct portals depending on the level. UG applicants apply through UCAS, and PG applicants apply directly via Leicester’s postgraduate application system. Both routes require the same core dossier of academic records, English evidence, and a personal statement.

  1. Shortlist the course from the Leicester course finder and check its individual entry requirements for the 2026 or 2027 cycle.
  2. Prepare scanned copies of transcripts, degree certificates, English test report, personal statement, and references.
  3. For UG, register with UCAS and submit a single application listing Leicester and up to four other choices. For PG, open the Leicester direct application portal.
  4. Pay any applicable fees. There is no application fee for direct PG applications at Leicester. UG applicants pay only the UCAS fee of £28.50 (₹3,626) for single-choice.
  5. Track your application status via UCAS Hub (UG) or Leicester’s applicant portal (PG). Respond to conditional-offer requests promptly.
  6. Once offered, pay the £3,000 deposit (₹3.82 Lakhs) to receive your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) letter, which sponsors your UK Student Route visa.

University of Leicester Admission Decisions Timeline

Leicester typically returns a decision within 4 to 6 weeks of a complete PG application. UG UCAS decisions follow the standard UCAS calendar, usually within 4 to 8 weeks of submission. Offers are conditional on final grades, English score, and funding evidence. Deferrals are considered case by case and usually granted for one intake cycle. Accept the offer through your applicant portal and pay the deposit within the stated window of 4 to 6 weeks.

University of Leicester Documents Required for Indian Students

Prepare and scan the following paperwork before opening either portal. Missing documents are the top reason for offer delays reported by Indian applicants at Leicester.

  • Valid passport: Six months' validity beyond your intended course start date.
  • Class XII marksheet and passing certificate (UG applicants).
  • Bachelor’s transcripts and provisional or final degree certificate (PG applicants).
  • English language test score report or medium-of-instruction certificate for waiver applicants.
  • Personal Statement or SOP of 500 to 1,000 words.
  • Two references (LORs) on official letterhead, at least one academic for PG.
  • Updated CV or résumé (PG and MBA applicants).
  • Work experience letters from previous employers (MBA and select PG).
  • Passport-size photograph against a plain background.
  • Financial evidence (bank statements for CAS and visa lodgement, not needed at initial application).

University of Leicester Acceptance Rate for Indian Students

Leicester does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Independent estimates place the overall figure at 70 to 75 percent, based on program-level admissions data across the Colleges of Science, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, and Arts. Acceptance rate here means the share of complete applications that receive an offer.

What is the University of Leicester Estimated Acceptance Rate?

For Indian applicants meeting the stated academic and English floors, the practical acceptance rate is broadly in line with the overall estimate. Leicester’s current ranking band sits at QS 326 and THE 192, where entry is competitive but not at the top-10 Russell Group tier.

University of Leicester Admissions Competitiveness by Program

Medicine (MBChB), Law (LLB), and a handful of MSc business programs are noticeably more competitive, with effective acceptance rates estimated in the 15 to 30 percent range. STEM MSc programs with clear numerate prerequisites (Data Science, Advanced Computer Science, Actuarial Science) hold higher offer rates for Indian applicants who meet the 2:1 floor.

Insider note: Meeting the published minimum is necessary but not sufficient for the most competitive programs. Personal statement quality and referee strength influence marginal decisions.

Tips for University of Leicester Admissions

The following tips are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at the University of Leicester across recent intakes.

  • Apply by mid-June for September entry: leaves buffer for CAS issuance and visa lodgement.
  • Attach translated transcripts: notarised English translation if your Class XII or bachelor’s records are in a regional language.
  • Front-load waiver evidence: a medium-of-instruction letter from your Indian university speeds conditional-offer clearance.
  • Match the personal statement to the course: reference specific Leicester modules and research groups, not generic UK-study motivation.
  • Lock the £3,000 deposit early: (₹3.82 Lakhs) frees you from CAS delays that push visa lodgement into risky windows.
  • Track the applicant portal daily: Leicester requests supplementary documents through the portal, not email.
  • Chase the Merit Scholarship: the £5,000 (₹6.36 Lakhs) International PG Merit Scholarship is auto-considered and reduces effective tuition meaningfully.

University of Leicester Admissions Checklist

The following steps cover what Indian applicants typically complete in the 6 to 9 months before their target intake at Leicester.

Scholarship

  • I received a scholarship of around 3000 GBP based on my scores from my undergraduate. Almost everyone with more than 70 percent score from undergraduates can avail of this scholarship. My batchmates are offered different scholarships. There are students with Commonwealth scholarships in my class. Roughly about forty to fifty percent of my classmates are offered a scholarship.

Scholarship

  • I had received a scholarship, but is  directly reduced from my college fees ( around 4 lacs), so basically if we have  good scores in schools and college, it would apply directly.

  • Some of my batchmates received it, some didn't, so basically it all depends on our scores in our earlier academics

  • On average atleast 40% students will receive scholarship, as of my knowledge

Scholarship

  • 1. Yes, I've received scholarship for my course. Scholarship was kind of Merit Scholarship as my aggregate for graduation was above 65%, the whole fee was about £21,500 but after it was £16,800.
    2. Award amount was £4700.
3.Yeah most of people have one or other scholarship for sure but 20% people don't know and don't apply so they paid full fee because they missed one small information mostly people came from Punjab consultancies in Punjab state but from south most of the people utilised it.
    4. 70% receive and typical award amount will be around £4000 to £6000
