The University of Lancashire, a public teaching-and-research institution based in Preston in England’s North West, was officially renamed from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in 2025 after Office for Students approval. It ranks #65 among UK universities in the QS World University Rankings 2026 edition, its strongest national position on record.

UCLan runs more than 350 undergraduate courses and 200 postgraduate programmes across Business, Computing, Medicine, Law and Creative Arts, all delivered in English. Indian students form one of the largest overseas cohorts on the Preston campus, with two intakes each year in September and January drawing applicants for the MBA, MSc Data Science and MBBS. Its position among universities in the UK is anchored in an affordable fee structure paired with the two-year post-study Graduate Route visa.

  • QS World Rank 2027: #1001 to #1200 band
  • Acceptance Rate: 22% (estimated)
  • Intakes: September and January
  • PG Tuition Range: GBP 17,900 to GBP 19,250 (INR 23.4 to 25.2 lakh)
  • Students (approx): 38,000 to 42,000 across all campuses
  • Median Graduate Salary: GBP 29,000 (INR 37.9 lakh)

Fees sit among the most affordable in the UK top-100, and the Excellence Scholarship worth GBP 3,500 (INR 4.6 lakh) is applied automatically to eligible international offer-holders. The university operates from four main sites in Preston, Burnley, Cumbria’s Westlakes campus and Larnaca in Cyprus, with the UK Graduate Route permitting Indian graduates to work in the country for two years after course completion.

Exchange rate used:
1 GBP = INR 130.72 as of August 2026

Admission Status: Open (January 2027 intake). International applications for the January 2027 cycle close on 30 November 2026, with a tuition deposit deadline of 7 December 2026. The next cycle, for September 2027 entry, is expected to open October 2026 on a rolling basis with course-by-course cut-offs typically finalised through mid-July 2027.

UCLan Fees and Popular Courses 2027

UCLan sets international tuition in two broad tiers. Classroom-based postgraduate programmes are priced at GBP 17,900 per year for the 2025-26 cycle, rising to GBP 19,250 per year for select 2026-27 masters such as Data Science. Clinical and laboratory programmes carry higher fees, with the MBBS reaching GBP 49,000 per year. Most taught masters run for 12 months with a single annual fee; the MBA with Professional Placement structures tuition across a taught year and a paid industry placement year.

University of Lancashire Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

The University of Lancashire sets its Indian equivalency at a bachelor with 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 for most taught masters. Select programmes such as MBA and Nursing sit higher, and undergraduate entry expects Class 12 aggregate of 60% or above.

Postgraduate Requirements for Indian Applicants at University of Lancashire

  • Academic: Recognised bachelor’s with 55% aggregate or CGPA 5.5/10 (recommended); MBA and MSc Nursing require 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 (recommended)
  • English proficiency: IELTS 6.5 overall with 5.5 in each band; TOEFL iBT and PTE Academic also accepted (verify at official page)
  • Credential verification: WES or UK ENIC report; allow 4 to 6 weeks lead time before the deposit deadline
  • Supporting documents: Personal statement, two academic references, resume; Nursing and MBBS require an interview and clinical clearance

Undergraduate Requirements for Indian Applicants at University of Lancashire

  • Academic: Class 12 with 60% overall for most programmes (recommended); Law requires 65% and MBBS requires 85% plus NEET UG
  • English proficiency: IELTS 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each band; Class 12 English at 70% or above from CBSE, ICSE or listed state boards may qualify for the IELTS waiver
  • Credential verification: Attested Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets; UCAS-routed applications also require a school reference

Key insight: UCLan operates one of the more flexible IELTS-waiver policies in the UK top-100. Indian applicants with 70% or above in Class 12 English can request an exemption at offer stage, which cuts the pre-CAS timeline by four to six weeks.

University of Lancashire Acceptance Rate 2027

UCLan does not publish an official acceptance rate. Third-party admissions data points to 22% (estimated) for international applicants across taught programmes, a figure that reflects competition in flagship pipelines such as MBA, MSc Data Science and MBBS rather than a university-wide filter.

General undergraduate programmes process qualifying Class 12 profiles into unconditional offers within three to four weeks. Masters admissions run tighter where portfolios or interviews are required, notably Forensic Psychology, MBBS and MA Interior Design.

Reality check: For an Indian applicant meeting the 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 threshold plus IELTS 6.5, University of Lancashire offers are typically issued within two to four weeks. MBBS and clinical Nursing pathways run longer due to interview and portfolio review stages.

University of Lancashire Campus, Facilities and Student Life

The main Preston campus sits in Lancashire’s largest city, a two-hour direct train from London Euston and 30 minutes from Manchester Airport. UCLan operates additional teaching sites in Burnley, at Westlakes in Cumbria for Nuclear and Energy programmes and in Larnaca (Cyprus).

  • Location and transport: Preston city centre, walk-in campus with train links to Manchester (30 minutes) and London (two hours)

The THE Subject Rankings 2026 place Law at #301 to #400 globally, Education Studies at #401 to #500 and Physical Sciences at #501 to #600, marking the strongest subject anchors for Indian applicants comparing UCLan against other MBA universities in the UK.

Key insight: For UK Graduate Route visa eligibility, any UCLan degree qualifies regardless of world-band position, because the university holds a full Track Record sponsor licence. Ranking matters more for employer recognition among Indian recruiters, where the Guardian UK #98 anchor is the more useful reference.

University of Lancashire Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

The University of Lancashire reports a graduate employability rate of 95%, with 91% of international graduates progressing to further study or employment within 15 months of course completion.

  • Graduate employment rate: 95% (UCLan Graduate Outcomes summary; broad category, not disclosed by nationality)
  • Median starting salary: GBP 29,000 (INR 37.9 lakh); UK graduate market median across all disciplines
  • Recruiter clusters: Financial services, retail and consumer, broadcasting and creative media, engineering and manufacturing; representative employers publicly named include Aston Martin, Marks and Spencer, BBC and Capita
  • Post-study work: Two-year Graduate Route visa for UG and PG completers; three years for PhD graduates
  • Careers support: Personal tutor and dedicated Career Coach across all faculties; industry mentor matching from year 1

Insider note: Indian graduates from UCLan MBA and MSc Computing programmes report the fastest offer conversion in North West logistics, retail and hospitality-technology sectors, benefiting from Preston’s rail proximity to Manchester and Liverpool employer clusters.

University of Lancashire vs Peer Universities

UCLan competes with UK modern universities of similar tuition tier and international intake profile. The peer set below places it against three UK institutions in the QS #801 to #1200 band and one aspirational comparator, using verified fee data.

University QS World Rank 2027 Avg Annual PG Fee (GBP) Avg Annual PG Fee (INR) Differentiator
University of Lancashire #1001 to #1200 GBP 17,900 to 19,250 INR 23.4 to 25.2 lakh Lowest UK top-100 fee tier with two-year MBA placement route
University of Salford #801 to #850  GBP 17,900 to 19,500  INR 23.4 to 25.5 lakh  Manchester-adjacent, stronger media and construction schools
University of Bolton #1201 to #1400  GBP 14,450 to 16,950  INR 18.9 to 22.2 lakh  Manchester metro, smaller cohort with lower fees
University of Huddersfield #801 to #850  GBP 17,600 to 19,000  INR 23.0 to 24.8 lakh  Yorkshire base, stronger engineering placement record

UCLan sits between Salford and Bolton on fee tier and cohort scale, and ships the strongest applied MBA route among these four with a mandatory 12-month industry placement. It is also the closest UK top-100 peer to Manchester on public transport, without central-Manchester rent, a factor many MS universities in the UK comparators cannot match.

The University of Lancashire suits Indian students who prioritise affordable fees inside the UK top-100 and want a two-year Graduate Route runway. Total investment for a one-year masters plus living lands near GBP 34,000 (INR 44.5 lakh), against a UK graduate median of GBP 29,000, keeping the payback window realistic for lender-financed applicants planning to study in the UK.

It is not the right fit for applicants seeking a Russell Group brand or a QS top-500 ranking anchor. Students prioritising a stronger ranking on their CV should look at the University of Leicester as a realistic alternative in a similar fee band.

FAQs

Ques. Can UCLan waive the IELTS requirement for Indian applicants?

Ans. Yes, University of Lancashire accepts Class 12 English scores between 60% and 75% from CBSE, ICSE and listed state boards in place of IELTS for most undergraduate and taught masters programmes. Nursing, MBBS and select clinical courses still require IELTS 7.0 with no band below 6.5. The waiver is reviewed case by case during the offer stage and cuts the pre-CAS timeline by four to six weeks.

Ques. Is the MBA at the University of Lancashire AACSB or AMBA accredited?

Ans. The MBA with Professional Placement is delivered through the Lancashire School of Business and Enterprise, which holds Small Business Charter accreditation and Chartered Management Institute (CMI) alignment. It is not AACSB or AMBA accredited as of 2026. The programme includes a mandatory 12-month industry placement in year two, which many Indian applicants prioritise over triple-crown accreditation badges when weighing return on investment.

Ques. What part-time work hours can Indian students take on a UCLan Student Visa?

Ans. The UK Student Visa permits 20 hours per week of part-time work during term time and full-time hours during official vacation weeks. UCLan Careers Hub maintains a live jobs board and hosts fortnightly employer visits at the Preston campus. Retail, hospitality and campus roles are most common; Nursing students cannot count clinical placement hours toward the 20-hour cap.

Ques. Does University of Lancashire accept education loans from Indian banks?

Ans. Yes, the University of Lancashire is on the approved list for education loans from HDFC Credila, Avanse, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, Auxilo and InCred among Indian lenders. The offer letter and CAS suffice for loan disbursement. UCLan does not require lender pre-approval before issuing CAS, but proof of funds equal to first-year tuition plus GBP 1,334 per month living costs is required for the visa.

Ques. What is the application fee for international programmes at UCLan?

Ans. UCLan does not charge an application fee for direct international masters or MBA applications routed through its own portal. Undergraduate applications submitted through UCAS carry the standard UCAS charge of GBP 28.50 for a single or multiple choice in 2026. MBBS applicants routing through UCAS pay the same fee, and payment is due at portal submission.

Ques. How does the University of Lancashire handle intake deferrals for Indian students?

Ans. University of Lancashire permits a one-time deferral from January 2027 to September 2027, or from September 2026 to January 2027, subject to programme availability. Deferrals must be requested in writing before the deposit deadline and are approved by the International Admissions Team within two weeks. Paid deposits are typically transferred to the new intake, and refunds apply only if the student withdraws entirely.

Ques. Can Indian students bring dependents on a UCLan Student Visa?

Ans. Under revised UK Home Office rules from 1 January 2024, only research masters (MRes) and PhD students at University of Lancashire can bring dependents on the Student Visa. Taught masters and undergraduate students cannot sponsor dependents. Financial proof for a dependent partner is GBP 845 per month for up to nine months, on top of the applicant’s own maintenance funds.

Ques. Which UCLan campus is closest to Manchester Airport for Indian arrivals?

Ans. The Preston campus is closest, at 30 minutes by direct train from Manchester Airport Rail Station. The Burnley campus is 45 minutes by combined train and bus, and the Westlakes campus in Cumbria is a three-hour road transfer. UCLan runs a Meet and Greet coach from Manchester Airport during the September and January arrival weeks for pre-registered international students.

  • UCLan has 5 campuses based in Preston, Burnley, Westlakes, Cyprus, and London. The university has an excellent infrastructure of many campus buildings, a library consisting of physical books and a computer lab, science labs, and teaching rooms.
  • They have a huge sports arena, a free gym for all students, and a separate student union building. The student centre and library have many places to study and have meetings. The student centre has facilities like student support, a well-being team, a careers team, a rooftop terrace garden, etc. The university conducts many events, such as welcome week, careers fair, and many fun activities by the student union.
  • I would recommend going through the university website and the student union's website to understand more about student life and events at the university.

  • They have a wide variety of clubs, and I was actively part of many of these societies, including business and management, film society, Indian society and a lot more. I was also the chair and treasurer at some point. and I was also holding the elected position of student union open councillor.

Campus Life

Two campuses were there. One in Cyprus and one in the United Kingdom 24/7 library and medical facilities were there; a Sportscard was given along with a gym and Zumba facilities. Welcome Week Fest, the Indian Cultural Society club, used to organise all the Indian festivals with great joy. The contest for CR and the president of the student union were also there. Regular competitions and networking events used to happen to upskill.

Overview

I had a great experience. Initially it was hard to pick up all alone. I landed in UK at my 20 age so it was so hard for a immature little girl. But I was blessed with few good people. And they helped me throughout the year. Eventually I stood up by myself. And I'm so proud of myself. Now I'm currently working as BDM at Infopark, Kochi. May be I would say it's all happening because I had tough and great time in UK. About University as said before it's so amazing than Kerala colleges.

Campus Life

About campus life it was all good. I had a lot of new experiences. And my favorite place is library. I love spending time in library so quiet and peaceful. Wifi facilities are available and I don't know much about sports I'm not very interested in that particular area. And yes the canteen was amazing.
