The University of Lancashire, a public teaching-and-research institution based in Preston in England’s North West, was officially renamed from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in 2025 after Office for Students approval. It ranks #65 among UK universities in the QS World University Rankings 2026 edition, its strongest national position on record.
UCLan runs more than 350 undergraduate courses and 200 postgraduate programmes across Business, Computing, Medicine, Law and Creative Arts, all delivered in English. Indian students form one of the largest overseas cohorts on the Preston campus, with two intakes each year in September and January drawing applicants for the MBA, MSc Data Science and MBBS. Its position among universities in the UK is anchored in an affordable fee structure paired with the two-year post-study Graduate Route visa.

University of Lancashire Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

- Post-study work: Two-year Graduate Route visa for UG and PG completers; three years for PhD graduates
- Careers support: Personal tutor and dedicated Career Coach across all faculties; industry mentor matching from year 1

University of Lancashire vs Peer Universities
UCLan competes with UK modern universities of similar tuition tier and international intake profile. The peer set below places it against three UK institutions in the QS #801 to #1200 band and one aspirational comparator, using verified fee data.
| University | QS World Rank 2027 | Avg Annual PG Fee (GBP) | Avg Annual PG Fee (INR) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Lancashire | #1001 to #1200 | GBP 17,900 to 19,250 | INR 23.4 to 25.2 lakh | Lowest UK top-100 fee tier with two-year MBA placement route |
| University of Salford | #801 to #850 | GBP 17,900 to 19,500 | INR 23.4 to 25.5 lakh | Manchester-adjacent, stronger media and construction schools |
| University of Bolton | #1201 to #1400 | GBP 14,450 to 16,950 | INR 18.9 to 22.2 lakh | Manchester metro, smaller cohort with lower fees |
| University of Huddersfield | #801 to #850 | GBP 17,600 to 19,000 | INR 23.0 to 24.8 lakh | Yorkshire base, stronger engineering placement record |
UCLan sits between Salford and Bolton on fee tier and cohort scale, and ships the strongest applied MBA route among these four with a mandatory 12-month industry placement. It is also the closest UK top-100 peer to Manchester on public transport, without central-Manchester rent, a factor many MS universities in the UK comparators cannot match.
The University of Lancashire suits Indian students who prioritise affordable fees inside the UK top-100 and want a two-year Graduate Route runway. Total investment for a one-year masters plus living lands near GBP 34,000 (INR 44.5 lakh), against a UK graduate median of GBP 29,000, keeping the payback window realistic for lender-financed applicants planning to study in the UK.
It is not the right fit for applicants seeking a Russell Group brand or a QS top-500 ranking anchor. Students prioritising a stronger ranking on their CV should look at the University of Leicester as a realistic alternative in a similar fee band.
FAQs
Ques. Can UCLan waive the IELTS requirement for Indian applicants?
Ans. Yes, University of Lancashire accepts Class 12 English scores between 60% and 75% from CBSE, ICSE and listed state boards in place of IELTS for most undergraduate and taught masters programmes. Nursing, MBBS and select clinical courses still require IELTS 7.0 with no band below 6.5. The waiver is reviewed case by case during the offer stage and cuts the pre-CAS timeline by four to six weeks.
Ques. Is the MBA at the University of Lancashire AACSB or AMBA accredited?
Ans. The MBA with Professional Placement is delivered through the Lancashire School of Business and Enterprise, which holds Small Business Charter accreditation and Chartered Management Institute (CMI) alignment. It is not AACSB or AMBA accredited as of 2026. The programme includes a mandatory 12-month industry placement in year two, which many Indian applicants prioritise over triple-crown accreditation badges when weighing return on investment.
Ques. What part-time work hours can Indian students take on a UCLan Student Visa?
Ans. The UK Student Visa permits 20 hours per week of part-time work during term time and full-time hours during official vacation weeks. UCLan Careers Hub maintains a live jobs board and hosts fortnightly employer visits at the Preston campus. Retail, hospitality and campus roles are most common; Nursing students cannot count clinical placement hours toward the 20-hour cap.
Ques. Does University of Lancashire accept education loans from Indian banks?
Ans. Yes, the University of Lancashire is on the approved list for education loans from HDFC Credila, Avanse, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, Auxilo and InCred among Indian lenders. The offer letter and CAS suffice for loan disbursement. UCLan does not require lender pre-approval before issuing CAS, but proof of funds equal to first-year tuition plus GBP 1,334 per month living costs is required for the visa.
Ques. What is the application fee for international programmes at UCLan?
Ans. UCLan does not charge an application fee for direct international masters or MBA applications routed through its own portal. Undergraduate applications submitted through UCAS carry the standard UCAS charge of GBP 28.50 for a single or multiple choice in 2026. MBBS applicants routing through UCAS pay the same fee, and payment is due at portal submission.
Ques. How does the University of Lancashire handle intake deferrals for Indian students?
Ans. University of Lancashire permits a one-time deferral from January 2027 to September 2027, or from September 2026 to January 2027, subject to programme availability. Deferrals must be requested in writing before the deposit deadline and are approved by the International Admissions Team within two weeks. Paid deposits are typically transferred to the new intake, and refunds apply only if the student withdraws entirely.
Ques. Can Indian students bring dependents on a UCLan Student Visa?
Ans. Under revised UK Home Office rules from 1 January 2024, only research masters (MRes) and PhD students at University of Lancashire can bring dependents on the Student Visa. Taught masters and undergraduate students cannot sponsor dependents. Financial proof for a dependent partner is GBP 845 per month for up to nine months, on top of the applicant’s own maintenance funds.
Ques. Which UCLan campus is closest to Manchester Airport for Indian arrivals?
Ans. The Preston campus is closest, at 30 minutes by direct train from Manchester Airport Rail Station. The Burnley campus is 45 minutes by combined train and bus, and the Westlakes campus in Cumbria is a three-hour road transfer. UCLan runs a Meet and Greet coach from Manchester Airport during the September and January arrival weeks for pre-registered international students.

Overview
I had a great experience. Initially it was hard to pick up all alone. I landed in UK at my 20 age so it was so hard for a immature little girl. But I was blessed with few good people. And they helped me throughout the year. Eventually I stood up by myself. And I'm so proud of myself. Now I'm currently working as BDM at Infopark, Kochi. May be I would say it's all happening because I had tough and great time in UK. About University as said before it's so amazing than Kerala colleges.
Campus Life
About campus life it was all good. I had a lot of new experiences. And my favorite place is library. I love spending time in library so quiet and peaceful. Wifi facilities are available and I don't know much about sports I'm not very interested in that particular area. And yes the canteen was amazing.
Overview
My fate bad that’s why I chosen this university. Consultancy people told as this is the best university for international students but the complete university have Indian students in all core engineering and management courses
