My main reason behind choosing this University has been my course. Shipping Law is a speciality which isn't offered at a lot of places. Next was the idea of a City which is progressive and has lots to offer. Another main reason were the Professors.
Course Curriculum
You need to select four modules and your dissertation for the LLM. Two of these modules need to be part of your specialization and the rest could be from the ones being offered by the University. The exams are evaluated based on Essays which can be 5-6000 words and timed assessments. The dissertation happens in the last three months of your course as the two semesters are actually of three and a half month duration.
Faculty
Martin Evans and Robert Huber are Nobel Laureates. Personally, I am amazed by my Professors Huw Pritchard, Philip Johnson, Wendy Kennett and Richard Caddell. They are very approachable and the University provided you with a Personal Tutor who is your Professor and your friend.
Placement
I was particularly interested in academics and policy making so I haven't been looking for placement opportunities much but the University has a 90+ % rate of alumni finding a job within six months of graduation and the careers team help you with a lot of thing. One of the perks is that they help you with your CV, interview, networking sessions and all which helps you with your career.
Accommodation
When I first arrived at the residences, it was a culture shock for me. The University Halls are very different from what we usually have in India. They are usually fully furnished flats with your own individual bedrooms and you are expected to cook your meals. The Flats are mixed accomodation and not specific for males or females. If you are looking for the University Halls they are a bit on the expensive side with the charges at £7200 for the whole year. Private ones could be found for cheaper like £6000. You can even opt for studio rooms with your small kitchenette in your room. You get access to high speed internet, social lounges and other deals which are specific to different halls.
Exams
I had to submit an SoP. You need to mention your reasons for choosing the programme, what do you think the outcome would be for you, why this particular institution, what inspires you, any specific tutor you want to study/research under and what you expect from the institution and you need to be really honest and open about your aims and future.
Events
The Student Union is a fun place to be. They have their own pub, night club, cafes, bank, post office, house agency, etc. There are a number of clubs you can be part of. The University has been the winner of the Varsity Sports Championship for the past few years and has excellent facilities for sports and extra curricular activities. For the fitness buff, there are gyms at the Student Union. You can be part of the University team in different extra curricular activities and sports and receive free training and equipment from the University for that.
