Ulster University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Ulster University maps Indian qualifications directly to UK benchmarks so applicants can check eligibility without a formal credential evaluation upfront.
Postgraduate (PG) requirements:
- Indian Bachelor’s degree with 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 (UK 2:2 equivalent) for standard MSc entry; 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 (UK 2:1 equivalent) for competitive programmes including MSc Business Analytics, MSc Data Analytics and LLM International Commercial Law.
- IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5; TOEFL iBT 80 (with a minimum of 20 in each component). PTE Academic 59 minimum. Duolingo English Test scores are accepted for selected programmes; verify at official page.
- WES ICAP course-by-course credential evaluation, statement of purpose, two references and passport bio page.
- MBA requires two years of documented work experience; Executive MBA requires five years including at least two in a management role.
Undergraduate (UG) requirements:
- Indian Class 12 from CBSE, ICSE or a recognised State Board with 60% overall and at least 50% in five subjects; higher cut-offs of 70% apply for Nursing and Pharmacy.
- IELTS Academic 6.0 with no band below 5.5 (7.0 for Nursing and Teaching).
Key insight: Ulster waives the IELTS requirement for Indian applicants whose Class 12 or Bachelor’s transcript confirms English as the medium of instruction, provided the school or university certifies it in writing on official letterhead.
Ulster University Acceptance Rate 2027
Ulster University does not publish an official acceptance rate. Independent estimates place the figure at 80% (estimated), making it one of the more accessible UK universities for Indian applicants who meet the published academic and English thresholds.
The high acceptance rate reflects Ulster’s broad course portfolio, transparent country-specific entry mapping and rolling admissions model rather than a low bar. Competitive programmes such as MSc Data Analytics and Nursing operate cut-offs that sit well above the university-wide benchmark.
Reality check: A high acceptance rate does not translate to a guaranteed offer at the branch campuses in Birmingham and London, where postgraduate seats are limited and typically fill 2 to 3 months before the stated deadline.

Ulster University Campus, Facilities and Student Life
Ulster University operates a five-campus network anchored by the flagship Belfast city-centre campus, which reopened in 2022 after a GBP 364 million redevelopment.
- Location and transport: The Belfast campus sits on York Street, a 10-minute walk to Belfast Grand Central station; Coleraine and Derry are served by direct Translink buses from Belfast.
- Housing: University-managed halls at Belfast and Coleraine cost GBP 135 to 195 per week; international students who apply by 30 June are prioritised in the allocation.
- Notable facility: The GBP 22 million Belfast School of Art wing houses one of the UK’s largest fine-art studios, and the Magee campus in Derry hosts the C-TRIC medical research hub.
- Indian student community: Ulster has an active Indian Society organising Diwali, Holi and cricket meets; the branch campuses in Birmingham and London have a higher share of South Asian students.
What Indian students say: Belfast is compact and walkable so weekly transport costs stay low. The city is smaller than London or Manchester, which means fewer part-time job openings in retail but easier access to campus placement leads.
Ulster University Scholarships 2027
Ulster University offers five funding routes that Indian applicants can stack: an automatic tuition scholarship for all international students, a branch-campus regional bursary, the GREAT scholarship, government-linked Chevening awards, and doctoral research studentships.
| Scholarship | Type | Award Value | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ulster International Scholarship | Automatic tuition discount | GBP 2,000 (INR 2.61 lakh) | All new international UG and PG students at Northern Ireland campuses | No application required |
| South Asia Bursary | Regional tuition discount | 15% off tuition | Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan students at Birmingham and London | Applied at offer stage |
| GREAT Scholarship (India) | Competitive award | GBP 10,000 (INR 13.05 lakh) | Indian nationals on selected PG programmes | Closed for September 2026; tentative 30 April 2027 for 2027-28 |
| Chevening Scholarship | Fully funded (external) | Full tuition + stipend | Indian nationals with 2 years work experience | 7 October 2026 for 2027 intake |
| Vice-Chancellor’s Research Scholarship | PhD studentship | Full tuition + GBP 20,780 stipend + GBP 900 training grant | PhD applicants with a strong research proposal | Opens late December 2026 |
Planning note: The GREAT India scholarship is highly competitive, with fewer than 15 seats offered UK-wide each cycle. Indian applicants should treat the GBP 2,000 automatic award and the 15% branch-campus bursary as the baseline and apply for Chevening in parallel.

- Median starting salary (market estimate): GBP 27,000 to GBP 40,000 (INR 35.24 to 52.20 lakh) across taught masters programmes.

- Post-study work visa: Indian graduates qualify for the two-year UK Graduate Route visa, extendable to three years for PhD holders.

Ulster University vs Peer Universities
The peer set below places Ulster against one Russell Group neighbour and three modern universities that compete for the same Indian applicant pool on fee-to-outcome balance.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | CD Study Abroad 2026 | Avg Annual PG Fee | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ulster University | #595 | #522 of 824 | GBP 18,310 (INR 23.89 lakh) | Northern Ireland affordability + built-in placement year |
| Queen’s University Belfast | #174 | NA | GBP 23,000-28,000 (INR 30.02-36.54 lakh) | Russell Group research + higher entry bar |
| Northumbria University | #528 | NA | GBP 20,350-20,900 (INR 26.56-27.28 lakh) | Larger Indian cohort and Newcastle location |
| Coventry University | #581 | NA | GBP 18,600 (INR 24.27 lakh) | Higher visa refusal risk offset by London campus |
| Nottingham Trent University | #639 | NA | GBP 18,300-21,150 (INR 23.88-27.60 lakh) | Employer placement leadership |
Ulster stands out on the fee-per-outcome axis. Total investment sits at INR 38 to 46 lakh for an MSc versus INR 55 to 65 lakh at Queen’s, and Ulster is the only peer here that bundles a paid placement year at a reduced GBP 4,900 tuition.
Ulster University suits Indian applicants who want a Class-of-2027 UK masters at a fee point below GBP 20,000 with a clear placement track. Total investment lands at INR 38 to 46 lakh against a median masters starting salary of INR 35 to 52 lakh, and the two-year MS in United Kingdom Graduate Route visa gives room to recoup the outlay before returning to India.
Ulster is not the right fit for applicants targeting Russell Group brand pull for return-to-India consulting or investment banking roles. Applicants with Class 12 above 85% and a research-heavy profile will get more mileage from Queen’s University Belfast, which sits 421 QS positions higher for a fee premium of INR 6 to 12 lakh.
Ulster University FAQs
Ques. Does Ulster University waive IELTS for Indian applicants?
Ans. Ulster University waives IELTS for Indian applicants whose Class 12 or Bachelor’s transcript confirms English as the medium of instruction. The school or university must issue this on official letterhead. The waiver applies to most taught programmes but excludes Nursing, Pharmacy and Teaching, which continue to require IELTS 7.0 with 7.0 in each band.
Ques. What are the part-time work rules for Indian students at Ulster?
Ans. Indian students on a UK Student visa at Ulster University can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during vacations. Belfast pays the UK national minimum wage of GBP 12.21 per hour for over-21s, translating to roughly GBP 950 (INR 1.24 lakh) per month at 20 hours weekly. On-campus roles are advertised via the Ulster Employability Hub.
Ques. Can Ulster University waive the GMAT or GRE for the MBA?
Ans. Ulster University does not require GMAT or GRE for the MBA or Executive MBA. Admission decisions rely on the Bachelor’s transcript, two years of documented work experience, a personal statement and two references. This is a differentiator against Russell Group peers such as Queen’s Belfast, which prefer a GMAT score above 600 for its business masters.
Ques. Is there an application fee for Indian students at Ulster?
Ans. Ulster University charges no application fee for postgraduate applications on the Global Apply portal. Undergraduate applicants pay the UCAS fee of GBP 28.50 (INR 3,720) for a single-course choice or GBP 28.50 for up to five choices. There is no fee waiver process, but the UCAS fee is nominal compared to the USD 100 to 250 charged by US universities.
Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans for Ulster University?
Ans. Ulster University is a listed institution with HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, InCred, SBI and Bank of Baroda. Unsecured loans of up to INR 40 lakh are typically sanctioned in 7 to 10 working days on a CAS letter and IELTS score. Secured loans covering the full INR 38 to 46 lakh cost of an Ulster masters can be sanctioned against property or fixed deposits at 9.5% to 11% interest.
Ques. What documents does WES need for Ulster University applications?
Ans. Ulster University accepts WES ICAP course-by-course evaluations. Indian applicants need to send attested transcripts and the degree certificate directly from the issuing university to WES Canada in a sealed envelope. Turnaround takes 7 working days once documents arrive, and the digital evaluation is delivered to Ulster’s Global Apply portal within 24 hours of completion.
Ques. Can dependants join Indian students at Ulster University?
Ans. UK visa rules from January 2024 restrict dependants to research-based postgraduate students and government-sponsored scholarship holders. Indian applicants on Ulster’s taught MSc or MBA programmes cannot bring a spouse or child on a dependant visa. PhD candidates and Chevening awardees keep the dependant route, and dependants have full work rights in the UK.
Ques. How does Ulster University handle deferrals for Indian applicants?
Ans. Ulster University permits a one-cycle deferral for postgraduate applicants who hold an unconditional offer and pay a GBP 500 (INR 65,250) tuition deposit. Deferrals from September 2026 to September 2027 are processed within 5 working days by emailing the admissions team. Fee levels are locked at the deferred year’s rate, which typically adds 3% to 5% to tuition.
