University of Southampton admissions accept Indian students at both bachelor’s and master’s levels through one large September intake plus a small January window for select postgraduate programmes. Undergraduate entry sits at 75% in Class XII from CBSE, CISCE, or Metro State Boards, while postgraduate entry needs a Bachelor’s between 55% and 75% depending on your institution tier.

  • Primary intake deadline: PG September 2026 intake closes Wednesday, 19 August 2026 for most master’s.
  • Fees: PG base tuition from £32,300 (₹41.33 Lakhs) per year, PG application fee £0.
  • Eligibility: UG Class XII 75%, PG Bachelor’s 55 to 75%, IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each component.
  • Acceptance rate: Estimated at 80 to 85%, university does not publish an official figure.

Popular routes for Indian students include MSc Computer Science, MSc Finance, and BEng Aeronautics and Astronautics, all backed by Russell Group teaching. Recent international cohorts rate engineering and business teaching strongly. See the University of Southampton profile for the full institutional overview.

Admission Status: Closing Soon. The primary September 2026 intake remains open for most PG master’s programmes, with the international application deadline on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, midday UK time. Postgraduate applications carry no application assessment fee. Undergraduate applications for September 2027 entry open through UCAS in September 2026.

Planning note: Southampton reviews master’s applications on a rolling basis, and popular courses can close before their stated deadline once seats fill. Apply 8 to 10 weeks before your target date to give time for offer, deposit, CAS, and UK Student Visa.

University of Southampton Eligibility for Indian Students

Southampton sets separate academic thresholds for undergraduate and postgraduate applicants, and its postgraduate entry is tiered by the Indian institution you graduated from. Every course also has an English language band (A to I) attached, with Band C being the most common overall requirement.

University of Southampton Undergraduate Eligibility

Bachelor’s applicants need a Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) or Standard 12 with a grade of at least 75% from CBSE, CISCE, or a recognised Metro State Board. Some engineering, physics, and mathematics degrees require Class XII Maths, Physics, or Chemistry at high grades.

  • UG general entry: Class XII overall 75% from CBSE, CISCE, or Metro State Board
  • Alternative UG paths: UK A-levels studied in India, or IB Diploma 28 to 38 points
  • Subject prerequisites: Maths and Physics for engineering; Maths for economics; Chemistry for life sciences

University of Southampton Postgraduate Eligibility

Master’s applicants need a UK 2:1 or 2:2 equivalent, with the Indian percentage cut-off decided by your institution’s Southampton tier (Tier 1, 2, or 3). A UK 2:1 reads as an upper second-class honours degree, and Southampton treats Tier 1 institutions as the most competitive.

Southampton Tier First Class Equivalent 2:1 Equivalent 2:2 Equivalent
Tier 1 (top research and IIT / IISc tier) 65% 60% 55%
Tier 2 (major central and state universities) 70% 65% 60%
Tier 3 (other recognised institutions) 75% 70% 65%

Programme pages carry the exact tier your Bachelor’s must fall into. MSc Computer Science, MSc Data Science, and MSc Artificial Intelligence accept only Tier A, B, or C institutions and expect a Bachelor’s in a computing discipline.

What is the minimum IELTS score for University of Southampton?

The majority of courses ask for IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component (Band C). Pre-master’s pathways drop to IELTS 5.0. Southampton also accepts TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Duolingo English Test, Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency, and IELTS One Skill Retake for a single component.

Southampton IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

Southampton offers a medium of instruction (MOI) style waiver for Indian applicants who studied in English. If you were taught and assessed in English for your final four years of high school at a CBSE or CISCE school, you can use your Class XII English score in place of a separate IELTS. The threshold is 70% in English at Class XII from CBSE or ISC. State Board English grades are reviewed case by case.

Insider note: The MOI waiver is decided by Admissions on your official transcript, so submit your Class XII marksheet in the application itself. Do not book an IELTS test if your CBSE or ISC English mark clears 70% and your subject page confirms Band C.

University of Southampton PG Programs and Entry Requirements

Southampton’s master’s portfolio spans computing, engineering, business, social sciences, and the humanities. Course pages carry programme-specific eligibility, English band, and duration. Fees, deposits, and living-cost detail sit on the Fees silo. This table lists the entry floor and English band verified from each course page.

Base tuition for PG taught master’s starts near £31,000 (₹39.66 Lakhs) per year and rises to £36,300 (₹46.44 Lakhs) for finance. Every offer carries a £2,000 (₹2.56 Lakhs) tuition deposit before CAS, which is deducted from your first-year fee. A full course-wise fees breakdown is in the Southampton programs and fees page.

Applicants for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence should upload transcripts showing the specific mathematics and programming modules named on the course page. Late applications for popular MSc programmes often close before the stated deadline, so submit by end-July for the August intake round.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official University of Southampton India applicants page for your chosen program before applying.

University of Southampton UG Programs and Entry Requirements

Bachelor’s applicants from India apply through the UK’s central UCAS platform, not the Southampton portal. The September 2026 undergraduate cycle has closed. Indian UG applicants now target September 2027 entry, with UCAS applications opening around 5 September 2026.

Southampton’s UG portfolio spans engineering, physical sciences, computer science, economics, humanities, and health. International UG tuition ranges from around £24,800 (₹31.73 Lakhs) for economics and humanities to £31,000 (₹39.66 Lakhs) per year for engineering and computer science.

Programme Duration Minimum Eligibility English Req. Min.
BEng Aeronautics and Astronautics 3 years Class XII 75% with Maths and Physics at high grades, or A*AA including Maths (A) and Physics (A) IELTS 6.5
(6.0 each)
BSc Economics 3 years Class XII 75% with Mathematics, or A-levels AAB including Mathematics IELTS 6.5

(6.5 each)
MEng Mechanical Engineering 4 years Class XII 75% with Maths and Physics at very high grades, or A*AA IELTS 6.5
(6.0 each)

Applicants whose Class XII marks are below the stated cut-off can consider the OnCampus Southampton Foundation Year or a UK Foundation programme, both of which lead to first-year undergraduate entry. Confirm the specific subject and grade cut-off on each course page before you finalise your UCAS choices.

University of Southampton MBA Admissions for Indian Students

The Southampton MBA is a one-year full-time programme run by the Southampton Business School. It targets mid-career applicants and is one of the few UK MBAs offered without a mandatory GMAT or GRE. The programme starts in September 2026 and the international application deadline is Wednesday, 19 August 2026.

Southampton MBA Entry Requirements for Indian Students

Southampton asks for a UK 2:2 degree equivalent (Indian percentage varies by tier, typically 55% to 60% or higher) and a minimum of three years of professional experience in supervising or managing people. Some analytical experience strengthens your application. GMAT and GRE are not required.

  • Academic: Bachelor’s degree at UK 2:2 equivalent, decided by your Southampton tier
  • Work experience: Minimum 3 years supervising or managing people
  • English: IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component
  • GMAT / GRE: Not required
  • Interview: All suitable applicants receive an interview invitation

Southampton MBA Fees and Intake

The 2026 MBA tuition is £35,600 (₹45.55 Lakhs) for the full one-year programme, with no separate application assessment fee. Southampton runs a single September start, so Indian applicants apply once a year. The Southampton Business School MBA Excellence International Scholarship (£7,000 to £15,000) is auto-considered on your application, and the Future Leader Scholarship offers five £15,000 awards. Full funding options for Indian students sit on the scholarships page.

Insider note: Southampton invites every suitable MBA applicant to interview, so treat the application as the shortlisting stage. Prepare a concrete example of a team you have managed, a decision you have owned, and one measurable outcome for the interview panel.

University of Southampton PhD Admissions for Indian Students

Southampton PhDs are 3 to 4 year research degrees with rolling admissions across most faculties. Indian applicants approach a supervisor or apply against an advertised project. Doctoral programmes do not use fixed intake deadlines and offers are made once your project and funding are confirmed.

Southampton PhD Entry Requirements

Southampton expects an upper second-class (2:1) undergraduate degree or a Master’s degree in a relevant subject. Competitive projects, especially in engineering, life sciences, and CS, typically ask for a first-class Bachelor’s or a distinction at Master’s level. The English requirement is Band C: IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each component.

Southampton PhD Funding for Indian Students

Southampton offers UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) aligned studentships. A fully funded four-year studentship covers tuition and a tax-free stipend of £19,237 per year (₹24.61 Lakhs) at UKRI rates for the 2026-27 academic year. The Spärck AI PhD Scholarships also cover full tuition plus a £20,780 living allowance. For a complete list of doctoral funding for Indian students, see the Southampton ranking band alongside your project search on the official site.

Planning note: Approach a supervisor with a 2 to 3 page research proposal before you submit the formal application. Southampton faculty typically respond within 10 to 15 working days if the proposal maps to their current interests.

University of Southampton Application Process for Indian Students

Indian applicants apply through two distinct routes: undergraduates use the UK’s UCAS Hub, while postgraduates and MBA applicants use Southampton’s own online application portal. Both routes ask for the same document set but sequence differently.

Postgraduate Application Steps

  3. Complete the personal details, education, and English test sections.
  4. Upload your Class XII marksheet, Bachelor’s transcript, degree certificate or provisional, CV, personal statement, and 2 academic or professional references.
  5. Submit before the 19 August or 2 September 2026 midday UK deadline, whichever applies to your course.
  6. Track your application in the portal and respond to any Admissions request within 7 working days.

Undergraduate UCAS Application Steps

  1. Register on the UCAS Hub from September 2026 for September 2027 entry.
  2. Add up to five course choices, one of which can be Southampton.

University of Southampton Admission Decisions and Offer Timelines

Southampton aims to process most applications within 2 to 6 weeks of a complete submission, though popular MSc courses and UCAS peak weeks stretch this to 8 weeks. Offers arrive as Unconditional (all requirements met) or Conditional (typically pending final transcript, IELTS, or deposit).

  • Offer receipt: 2 to 6 weeks from complete submission for most programmes
  • Response window: Typically 4 to 6 weeks to accept a conditional offer
  • PG deposit: £2,000 (₹2.56 Lakhs) tuition deposit is required before CAS is issued
  • Deferral: One-year deferral is usually allowed and requested through the applicant portal

University of Southampton Documents Required for Indian Students

Southampton uses a standard document set that is uploaded online. Missing documents are the most common reason for delayed decisions, so scan every certificate in colour, at 300 dpi or higher, in PDF, before you start the application.

Southampton Postgraduate Document Checklist

  • Passport: Bio-data page with at least 12 months validity beyond course start
  • Class X and Class XII marksheets: Attested colour scans
  • Bachelor’s transcripts: All semesters or years, official issue
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate: Or provisional if final result is pending
  • English proficiency score report: IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or Duolingo
  • CV or resume: Two pages, chronological, with education and any work experience
  • Personal statement: 500 words maximum, tailored to your Southampton course
  • Two reference letters: Academic references from Bachelor’s faculty; MBA applicants may use one professional referee

  • Passport bio-data page
  • Personal statement: 250 to 500 words, submitted through UCAS
  • School reference: Uploaded by your school through UCAS
  • English proficiency evidence: IELTS score report or CBSE / ISC English mark for the MOI waiver

University of Southampton Acceptance Rate

The University of Southampton does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Based on Russell Group intake patterns and multiple third-party admissions estimates, the overall acceptance rate is estimated at 80 to 85%. This is a moderately selective profile at the university level, though individual programmes and departments are far more competitive.

How competitive are Southampton’s most popular courses?

Course-level acceptance rates vary sharply by subject. MSc Data Science, MSc Artificial Intelligence, and Aeronautics routinely close early each year because Indian and Chinese applicants concentrate there. Business School master’s, humanities, and social science degrees remain more open through the cycle.

University of Southampton Selectivity by Level

  • Undergraduate overall: Around 80 to 85%, though engineering and medicine are lower
  • Postgraduate taught overall: Around 80 to 85%, but AI, Data Science, and Finance drop below
  • PhD: Highly competitive by department, especially for funded studentships

Insider note: The acceptance rate quoted for Southampton is a headline institutional figure. What matters for your case is your programme’s demand, your Bachelor’s tier, and how early in the cycle you apply. Applications submitted in the first six weeks after the portal opens see faster and more favourable decisions.

UK Student Visa for University of Southampton Applicants from India

Indian applicants to the University of Southampton apply for the UK Student Visa (formerly Tier 4 General). Once you accept your Southampton offer and pay the £2,000 deposit, the university issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), which is a unique reference number you enter in the online visa form.

You can apply for the visa up to 6 months before your course start date. The application is made online at gov.uk. You need to prove tuition payment or CAS, sufficient living cost funds held for 28 consecutive days, TB test clearance, and English proficiency. Living-cost proof for Southampton (outside London) is £1,136 per month for up to 9 months, currently around ₹13.06 Lakhs held in your bank or an authorised sponsor’s account. The visa fee is £524 and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) is £776 per year of study.

2026 update: The UK has moved to a digital eVisa for Student route applicants, so no BRP card is issued. Once your visa is approved, you access your immigration status through the UKVI account. Check the Southampton ranking band and living-cost planning notes on the Fees page before you remit the deposit.

Tips for University of Southampton Admissions from India

The following tips are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Southampton across MSc, MBA, and undergraduate routes.

  • Apply 8 to 10 weeks before the deadline for AI, Data Science, and Computer Science, since these close early.
  • Get your Bachelor’s tier confirmed before you finalise your MSc shortlist, since the same 65% mark reads differently across tiers.
  • Use the MOI waiver if your CBSE or ISC English is 70% or higher, and skip the IELTS booking.
  • Pay the £2,000 (₹2.56 Lakhs) tuition deposit early to lock a CAS slot for the visa timeline.
  • Auto-consider scholarships such as the Global Excellence £3,000 award simply by submitting a complete PG application.
  • Draft your personal statement around your Bachelor’s modules and one research or project, not a generic motivation essay.
  • Reply to Admissions emails within 7 working days, since delays roll your application into the next weekly review.

University of Southampton Admissions Checklist

The following steps cover what Indian applicants typically complete in the run-up to a September Southampton intake. Anchor each step to your target deadline.

  • 12 weeks before deadline: Confirm your Southampton programme, Bachelor’s tier, and English band
  • 10 weeks before deadline: Request academic transcripts and reference letters from your college
  • 8 weeks before deadline: Book IELTS if the MOI waiver does not apply, and reserve a repeat slot
  • 6 weeks before deadline: Draft your personal statement and CV, and share for peer review
  • 4 weeks before deadline: Submit your online application and upload all documents
  • Within 4 weeks of offer: Pay the £2,000 (₹2.56 Lakhs) tuition deposit to release your CAS
  • 2 to 3 months before travel: Apply for the UK Student Visa, IHS, and TB test

University of Southampton admissions favour Indian applicants who apply early, use the MOI waiver where their CBSE or ISC English mark clears 70%, and lock the £2,000 (₹2.56 Lakhs) tuition deposit within the offer window to protect their visa timeline.

Scholarship

  • I received a scholarship called 'Merit Scholarships for International Students' of 3000 GBP. A few of my batchmates received 5000 GBP, as they had better grades in their undergrad.
  • The typical award amount ranges from 1000 GBP to 8000 GBP. And the scholarship depends on the faculty and course. You do not need to apply for it; you get awarded automatically based on your academics.

Scholarship

  • Scholarships for the MBA program at Southampton are primarily awarded based on professional experience. Candidates with greater work experience tend to have enhanced prospects of receiving a tuition fee reduction. Although I did not obtain a scholarship, I am aware that approximately 15 out of 62 students in my cohort were successful in securing one.
  • The scholarship amounts varied between £2,000 and £7,000, which were subtracted from the overall tuition fees. The competition for these scholarships is significant, and possessing substantial work experience, demonstrated leadership abilities, and a compelling application can significantly bolster your chances. Additionally, some students were able to obtain external funding or sponsorship from their employers.

Scholarship

  • For my course, every Indian/Overseas student gets GBP 8000 as a scholarship. More can be availed if you fit into the required category. The name is Dean's Scholarship for Overseas Students.
  • I too, received GBP 8000 as the scholarship amount.
  • Similar to me, my batchmates received the same amount. I had friends in other couses (MSc in Operational Research) who received GBP 3000 and my friends in MSc Computer Science didn't receive any.
  • As I mentioned, every Overseas student can get the scholarship as long as it's mentioned in their course prospectus.
