IIM Kozhikode PhD Management Practice Track FAQs

Ques. What is the difference between DPM and PhD Practice Track at IIM Kozhikode?

Ans. The full-time DPM (Doctoral Programme in Management) is a fellowship program with tuition waiver and monthly stipend ranging from INR 42,000 to INR 50,000. It is open to candidates without strict work experience requirements and requires a valid CAT/GMAT/GRE/GATE score. The Practice Track requires a minimum of 8 years work experience, charges a total fee of INR 12,50,000, and does not provide a monthly stipend. It is designed for working professionals who integrate industry knowledge with research.

Ques. Is the PhD Practice Track at IIMK a part-time or full-time program?

Ans. The Practice Track is a doctoral program tailored for working professionals and scholar-practitioners. It does not strictly require candidates to be full-time on campus throughout the duration. However, a minimum residency period at the IIMK campus is required before thesis submission. The total program duration typically spans 4 to 5 years. Candidates continue their professional roles while progressing through coursework, qualifying examinations, and thesis milestones.

Ques. What work experience is required for PhD Practice Track admission at IIM Kozhikode?

Ans. Candidates must have a minimum of 8 years of full-time post-graduation work experience as of the application deadline. For the Strategic Management specialization, a minimum of 15 years of work experience is required, with preference given to those in senior business leadership roles. Part-time work, internships, and contractual assignments are not counted toward this requirement.

Ques. What research areas are available in the Practice Track at IIM Kozhikode?

Ans. The Practice Track offers research across eight specializations: Economics, Finance Accounting and Control, Humanities and Liberal Arts in Management, Information Systems, Marketing Management, Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources, Quantitative Methods and Operations Management, and Strategic Management. Candidates may apply to a maximum of two research areas in a single admission cycle, paying an additional INR 1,000 for the second area application.

Ques. Is a CAT or GMAT score required for the PhD Practice Track?

Ans. Unlike the full-time DPM program, the Practice Track does not require a standardized entrance exam score such as CAT, GMAT, GRE, or GATE. Selection is based on academic qualifications, professional experience, a written research statement, and an online interview conducted by faculty in the chosen specialization area. This makes the Practice Track more accessible to senior professionals who may not have a recent standardized test score.

Ques. What career paths do IIM Kozhikode Practice Track PhD graduates pursue?

Ans. Practice Track PhD graduates from IIM Kozhikode typically pursue roles at the intersection of academia and industry. Many join as visiting faculty, adjunct professors, or full-time faculty at business schools and management institutes. Others use the doctoral credential to strengthen their positions as researchers, thought leaders, or consultants. Some transition to policy roles in government bodies or research organizations after completing the program.

If you’ve worked for a while in the operations domain, and wish to climb the ladder in your company, this is an ideal course for you. It is meant for professionals with some amount of work experience.

It demands a fundamental understanding of operations, and is not meant for freshers or professionals with zero experience in this domain. Moreover, the course does not offer any placement assistance. How is the response to the IIM Kozhikode's PGP-LSM program? Is there any significant difference for the candidates selected with the general MBA program in terms of candidates pool?

Ananya KhannaStudied Marketing at Management Development Institute, Gurgaon (2018)

The students' response to the IIM Kozhikode's PGP-LSM program was good. The demand of the course was also high.

But as far as the response of the industry is concerned, I think it will take a few more years to assess this. The course is new and will offer opportunities different from that of a general MBA program. Both the courses are not likely to overlap in significance for a few more years.

IIM Kozhikode’s MBA in liberal studies is a fresh change from the traditional MBA. It helps in the comprehensive development of students. Moreover, IIM Kozhikode has the best faculty when it comes to Humanities & Liberal Arts in Management.

I'm working in a joint venture of Indian government and earning 7 LPA. I'm selected for IIM Kozhikode PGP course (2021-2023) Should I join it?

Mahak SenguptaPDGM from Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (2016)

Whether to join IIM Kozhikode or not is definitely your call because the scenario once you join IIM K would be different.

I would like to share with you an experience of my friend, who attended IIM K.

  • He dropped out of IIMK as he found it stressful. You should know that the course is rigorous and it prepares you for the stress that you are about to deal with.
  • Obviously, the chance of you earning a high salary is for sure. But again, it depends on how well the economy is doing.
  • Most of the time the employers have a preference order, i.e. IIT>NIT>fresher, for recruitment.
  • To ensure good placement opportunities try to be in the top 10% of the class in terms of GPA. Also, you can become a part of organizing events, leading clubs, etc.
  • Since you will have 12 months of experience, you will be treated as a fresher and won’t be allowed to sit in lateral placement. So, OPs companies will be out of the picture which is maybe your interest since you are coming from a similar background. So, if you want an OPs job role, stay in the industry for another year and then join IIM K.
  • In order to get a consulting or finance role, you will need to come in the top 10 of your batch. You will also need CFA certification.
  • Marketing and IT companies will prefer you since you are a fresher. So, if you are interested in Marketing or IT, you can definitely join the institute.
  • HR companies don’t usually visit IIM K.

So, I will advise you to consider all these factors and make a more convenient choice for yourself.

I have 4 years of work experience in e-commerce. Is the IIM Kozhikode EPGP beneficial for me? As opposed to other IIMs its a 2-year course.

Unmesh GangulyMBA in Marketing & Information Systems ,Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (2020)

The profile you have will suit the two-year (hybrid model) EPGP program. If you do not wish to leave your job then this course can be good for you. Otherwise, you can go for full-time programs of one year at IIM ABC, SP Jain, or ISB. These are currently some of the top one-year programs.

E-commerce has gained a lot of popularity over the years and the scope is tremendous. Having work experience before joining an IIM will always get you plus points.

You will have good placement opportunities in IIM Kozhikode. The recruiters who visit the institute also offer very attractive packages. The average package is also high which makes the ROI manageable. If you take EMI it can be paid easily in five years. Internship opportunities are also provided to the students.
