Key Points

  • MGU-CAP is a centralised online allotment process. Students rank their preferred colleges and courses in a single application without appearing for any separate college-level test.
  • Kerala’s e-Grantz scholarship portal covers BA students from SC/ST and OBC communities, providing both tuition and maintenance under a single state-managed portal.
  • MGU BA programmes in Journalism and Mass Communication, Tourism, and Theatre Arts carry a different fee structure from the general arts fee band.

✓ Opt for this if

  • You want a large number of specialization options through a single centralised application across central Kerala colleges.
  • You are eligible for Kerala HECS or e-Grantz, which can cover a significant part of the total fee over three years.
  • You want access to vocational BA variants (Journalism, Theatre Arts, Tourism) within the same CAP framework.

✗ Skip if

  • You want structured placement support. MGU BA affiliated colleges do not publish formal placement data for arts graduates.
  • You prefer a residential university campus experience rather than an affiliate college model spread across multiple districts.
  • You need a specific minor or interdisciplinary course combination not available in the MGU-CAP option list.

MGU BA FAQs

Ques. How does the MGU-CAP option form work and how many options can a student fill?

Ans. The MGU-CAP option form allows students to rank their preferred (college, specialization) combinations in order of preference. Up to 200 options may be entered in a single application. The allotment engine matches each applicant to the highest-ranked option for which their Class 12 merit qualifies them. Since merit cutoffs vary between popular and less-demanded courses, filling a larger number of options improves the probability of getting a preferred allotment. Students must submit the option form before the CAP deadline because options cannot be changed after the window closes.

Ques. What is the Kerala HECS scholarship and how is it different from CSSS?

Ans. The Kerala HECS provides INR 1,54,000 spread over five years to eligible Kerala-domicile students from economically weaker families. It covers undergraduate and postgraduate education. The Central Sector Scheme of Scholarships (CSSS) is a separate, centrally funded scheme providing INR 12,000 per year available to students across India who scored in the top 20 percentile in their Class 12 board exam. A student can benefit from both if they meet the criteria for each independently. The schemes are not mutually exclusive.

Ques. Do MGU BA affiliated colleges conduct any entrance test before admission?

Ans. For most standard BA specializations, MGU-CAP does not require an entrance test. Admission is merit-based on Class 12 aggregate. However, certain professional BA programmes such as Journalism and Mass Communication at a few affiliated colleges may conduct a departmental interview or skills-based screen after the CAP allotment. If a student is allotted to such a programme, the college communicates the additional round separately. The CAP application form does not ask for test scores.

Ques. Which MGU BA specializations have the most distinct career pathways?

Ans. Three MGU BA specializations stand out for their distinct post-degree pathways. BA Journalism and Mass Communication has clear industry entry routes into print, digital, and broadcast media, and feeds into MA Mass Communication at universities that accept it. BA Tourism allows graduates to enter Kerala’s large hospitality and travel sector or pursue MBA in Tourism. BA Theatre Arts has a niche pathway into state cultural academies and regional film and television. General Literature streams (BA English, BA Malayalam) primarily lead into teaching, civil services preparation, and humanities PG programmes.

Ques. What happens if a student misses the reporting deadline after a CAP allotment?

Ans. Missing the reporting deadline results in automatic cancellation of the allotted seat. The seat may be filled through supplementary allotment rounds if MGU conducts them, or through the college’s spot admission process after CAP rounds close. There is no mechanism to reinstate a lapsed allotment once the deadline passes. Students who miss reporting must restart the process in the next academic year. It is therefore important to remit fees and report within the specified window even if the allotted course is not the first preference.
