MGU MA Anthropology FAQs
Ques. Is the MA Anthropology programme at MGU a full-time on-campus course, or is it available in distance/online mode as well?
Ans. The MA Anthropology at MGU is strictly a full-time, on-campus programme offered through the School of Social Sciences, a statutory university teaching department. It requires regular physical attendance at the Priyadarsini Hills campus in Kottayam. MGU does offer some programmes through its Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE), but MA Anthropology is not among them. Students must be present for lectures, seminars, field visits, and internal assessments throughout the 4 semesters.
Ques. What is the difference between the MGU CAT quota and the CUET-PG Open All India Quota for MA Anthropology admission?
Ans. MGU fills 80% of the 20 seats (i.e., 16 seats) through its own Common Admission Test (MGU CAT 2026), which is open primarily to students from Kerala and other states. An additional 20% of seats (4 seats, over and above the sanctioned strength) are earmarked as Open All India Quota and are filled based on valid CUET-PG scores. Candidates who appear for MGU CAT and also hold a CUET-PG score are considered under both quotas simultaneously, improving their chances of selection. International students have a separate 25% quota over and above the sanctioned strength.
Ques. What career options are available after completing MA Anthropology from MGU?
Ans. Graduates of MA Anthropology from MGU can pursue careers in academics and research (as lecturers, research associates, or PhD scholars), civil services (UPSC/KPSC - Anthropology is an optional subject in UPSC Mains), NGOs and development organizations, forensic anthropology, museum curation, and cultural heritage management. Many students also go on to pursue MPhil or PhD programmes at MGU or other universities. The UGC-NET/JRF in Anthropology is a common next step for those aiming for teaching or research fellowships.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for MA Anthropology students at MGU?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at MGU is not guaranteed and is subject to availability. All full-time regular students of university departments are eligible to apply through the MGU Hostel Management Portal (hostel.mgu.ac.in). Allotment is based on a priority list published by the university. The hostel fee is approximately ₹4,380 per year, with mess charges of around ₹1,900 per month. Students who do not get hostel accommodation typically find private PG accommodations near the campus in Athirampuzha/Kottayam area.
Ques. Can students from non-Anthropology backgrounds apply for MA Anthropology at MGU?
Ans. Yes. The eligibility criterion for MA Anthropology at MGU is a Bachelor's degree in any discipline with not less than 45% marks in Part III (core subjects). This means students from any undergraduate background - whether Arts, Science, or Commerce - can apply. The MGU CAT entrance examination tests subject knowledge and general aptitude, so students from non-Anthropology backgrounds are advised to prepare the basic concepts of social, cultural, and physical anthropology as part of their entrance preparation.
Ques. What is the syllabus pattern for the MGU CAT 2026 entrance exam for MA Anthropology?
Ans. The MGU CAT 2026 is an online entrance examination of approximately 2 hours duration, consisting of objective-type (MCQ) questions. For MA Anthropology, the question paper typically covers topics from social and cultural anthropology, physical anthropology, archaeological anthropology, research methodology, and general awareness. There is no negative marking based on the previous year's pattern. The exam is conducted across test centres in all 14 districts of Kerala, as well as in Chennai and Bengaluru. Candidates are advised to refer to the official MGU CAT prospectus available at cat.mgu.ac.in for the detailed syllabus.
