MGU MBA FAQs
Ques. Does SMBS MGU offer Operations Management as a separate MBA programme or is it a specialization within the general MBA?
Ans. Operations Management at SMBS is a specialization within the 2-year full-time MBA programme, not a standalone degree. All MBA students at SMBS follow a common core curriculum in the first year covering subjects like Marketing Management, Financial Accounting, Organizational Behaviour, and Quantitative Methods. From the second year onwards, students choose their specialization - Finance, HRM, Marketing, Operations, or Systems Management. So when you join, you are admitted to the MBA programme and then opt for Operations as your specialization track in Semester 3 and 4.
Ques. Is the SMBS MBA recognized and approved? What is the intake and is it difficult to get a seat?
Ans. Yes, the SMBS MBA is AICTE-approved and offered by Mahatma Gandhi University, which is a NAAC A++ accredited central university in Kerala. The total intake is 60 seats under the All India Open/Merit Quota plus 12 additional seats for international students. Given that admission is based on CAT/CMAT/KMAT scores plus GD and PI, competition is moderate. Students with a KMAT Kerala score above 50 percentile and a decent academic record generally have a reasonable chance of securing admission.
Ques. Can students from outside Kerala apply for MBA at SMBS MGU? What is the All India quota?
Ans. Yes, students from across India can apply. The entire 60-seat intake is under the All India Open/Merit Quota, meaning there is no separate state quota restriction for the SMBS MBA. However, candidates from universities other than MG University must obtain an Eligibility/Recognition Certificate from MGU and submit a Migration Certificate/NOC from their parent university at the time of GD/PI. The application process is fully online at smbsadmissions.mgu.ac.in.
Ques. What is the fee structure for the MBA at SMBS and are there any hidden charges?
Ans. The total tuition fee for the 2-year MBA programme is INR 50,380 payable across four semesters (Sem 1: INR 17,785; Sem 2: INR 10,195; Sem 3: INR 12,205; Sem 4: INR 10,195). Additionally, a one-time application fee of INR 1,250 (INR 625 for SC/ST) is payable at the time of applying. Hostel accommodation on the MGU campus is available at approximately INR 1,900 per month and is optional. There are no other major hidden charges reported, making this one of the most affordable AICTE-approved MBA programmes in Kerala.
Ques. What kind of placements can MBA Operations Management students expect from SMBS MGU?
Ans. SMBS has an active placement cell that conducts pre-placement orientation, SAP ERP training, and finishing school programmes. Based on available placement data, companies from sectors like banking, FMCG, logistics, and IT have recruited from SMBS. The highest package reported has been around INR 25 LPA (Federal Bank). However, placement statistics specific to the Operations Management specialization are not separately published. Students interested in operations roles typically get placed in supply chain, logistics, and operations management roles in companies operating in Kerala and South India.
Ques. Is there a KMAT Session 2 for 2026 and can I apply for SMBS MBA using that score?
Ans. KMAT Kerala is conducted in two sessions annually by CEE Kerala. Session 1 for 2026 was held on February 22, 2026. Session 2 is expected to be conducted around May-June 2026, with registration likely opening in April 2026. Since the SMBS MBA application deadline is April 30, 2026, candidates who missed Session 1 should check whether SMBS accepts Session 2 KMAT scores for the 2026 admission cycle. It is advisable to contact SMBS directly at smbs@mgu.ac.in or 0481-2733367 to confirm this before the application deadline.
