ICT iMTech Chemical Engg FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between the B.Tech + M.Tech (Integrated) programme at ICT Mumbai and the regular B.Tech/B.Chem.Engg. programme? Is the integrated degree worth it?
Ans. The Integrated M.Tech (iMTech) at ICT Mumbai is a 5-year programme that leads to both a B.Tech and an M.Tech degree upon completion, whereas the regular B.Chem.Engg. or B.Tech is a 4-year programme. The key differentiator of the iMTech is its industry-integrated curriculum: students alternate between classroom semesters and in-plant training at industries, accumulating approximately 2 years of real industrial experience by graduation. This makes iMTech graduates highly industry-ready compared to regular B.Tech graduates. Additionally, under NEP 2020, students have exit options at each year, so if a student wishes to exit after 4 years, they receive a B.Tech degree. The M.Tech degree is awarded only upon completing all 5 years. For students who are certain about pursuing a career in the chemical industry, the iMTech is widely considered more valuable due to the dual degree and substantial industrial exposure.
Ques. How are the 60 seats distributed between Maharashtra and All India candidates? Can students from other states apply?
Ans. Yes, students from all states can apply for the iMTech programme at ICT Mumbai. The 60 seats are divided as follows: 70% (42 seats) are reserved for Maharashtra State candidates and filled through MHT CET scores, while 30% (18 seats) are for All India candidates (including Maharashtra candidates) and filled through JEE Main scores. Reservations for SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwD categories apply only to the Maharashtra quota seats as per Maharashtra Government norms. All India quota seats are filled on open merit based on JEE Main rank. Students from outside Maharashtra must apply through the JEE Main route and participate in the CAP counselling process conducted by the Maharashtra CET Cell.
Ques. What are the six multidisciplinary minors available in the iMTech programme, and how are they allotted to students?
Ans. The six multidisciplinary minors available in the iMTech Chemical Engineering programme are: (1) Petroleum and Petrochemical Technology, (2) Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, (3) Energy Technology, (4) Fibres and Textile Processing Technology, (5) Materials and Polymer Engineering, and (6) Food Technology. Minor allotment happens in the 3rd semester based on the student's academic performance (grades in the first two semesters) and the choices submitted by the student. Each minor has a maximum intake of 11 students, and once allotted, the minor cannot be changed. Students are advised to perform well in the first year to secure their preferred minor, as popular minors like Petroleum and Pharmaceutical Technology tend to be highly competitive.
Ques. What kind of industries provide internships during the iMTech programme, and do students receive a stipend during industrial training?
Ans. ICT Mumbai has tie-ups with over 50 industries for the in-plant training (IPT) component of the iMTech programme. These include major names such as Reliance Industries (Jamnagar), IOCL (Panipat, Paradip, Gujarat, Baroda), NALCO, Piramal Pharmaceuticals, Fermenta Biotech, OPAL Dahej, SRF, Exxon Mobil, Chennai Petroleum Corporation, and HEMRL-DRDO, among others. During industrial internships, many industries provide stipends and/or accommodation to students, making the education more affordable. The stipend amount varies by company and is not guaranteed, but a significant number of students have received financial support during their training periods. This industrial exposure also directly aids in final placements.
Ques. What are the placement prospects for iMTech graduates from ICT Mumbai? Are they placed in core chemical engineering roles?
Ans. ICT Mumbai is known for placing its graduates predominantly in core chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and process industries, which is a distinguishing feature compared to many engineering colleges where students end up in IT roles. The median package for ICT Mumbai graduates was reported at Rs. 9 Lakhs per annum in 2024, with packages ranging from Rs. 3.50 Lakhs to Rs. 16 Lakhs per annum. iMTech graduates, having approximately 2 years of industrial experience, are particularly valued by the industry. Top recruiters include IOCL, RIL, BASF, Pidilite, Asian Paints, Tata Chemicals, Piramal, and several MNCs. Additionally, a significant number of ICT Mumbai graduates pursue higher studies at top global universities including MIT, Stanford, Caltech, and Cambridge, often with full financial support.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for iMTech students at ICT Mumbai? What are the living arrangements like?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at ICT Mumbai is NOT guaranteed to all students. The institute has approximately 900 hostel seats across 5 hostel blocks (2 boys' hostels and 2 girls' hostels, plus Hostel No. 5 for boys), but these are shared across all programmes and years. For first-year UG students (including iMTech), a maximum of 90 boys and 30 girls can be accommodated. Preference is given to outstation students from beyond the Mumbai suburban limits (beyond Virar, Titwala, Ambarnath, and Panvel). Students from Mumbai and nearby areas may not get hostel accommodation. It is strongly advised to contact the ICT Hostel Office (hostel@staff.ictmumbai.edu.in, Phone: 91-22-33611452) well in advance to check availability. Students who do not get hostel accommodation typically arrange private accommodation in the Matunga/Dadar area near the campus.
