The B.Tech in Surface Coating Technology at ICT Mumbai is a 4-year full-time undergraduate programme offered by the Department of Polymer and Surface Engineering, one of the oldest and most specialised departments in India for coatings and polymer technology, established in 1946. The programme covers the science and technology of paints, varnishes, enamels, lacquers, powder coatings, adhesives, sealants, printing inks, and related surface engineering applications. The curriculum blends theory, practicals, seminars, in-plant training, industrial visits, and project work, with a strong foundation in polymer chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and chemical engineering. The total fees for the programme is approximately Rs. 1.33 Lakhs for the entire 4-year duration (General category), with an annual tuition fee of Rs. 15,000 per year. The course has an intake of 16 seats and is admitted primarily through MHT CET. The programme is popular for its niche focus, strong industry connections with the paints and coatings sector, and excellent placement and higher studies prospects.

Admissions for the 2026-27 academic year are currently upcoming. The MHT CET 2026 (PCM) exam is ongoing (April 11 to April 27, 2026), and CAP counselling for B.Tech admissions is expected to begin in late June/July 2026 after the MHT CET result is declared in June 2026.

ICT B.Tech Surface Coating Technology FAQs

Ques. What exactly is Surface Coating Technology and what will I study in this B.Tech programme at ICT Mumbai?

Ans. Surface Coating Technology is the science and engineering of materials applied to surfaces to change their properties such as colour, gloss, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, or permeability. In this B.Tech programme at ICT Mumbai, you will study paints, varnishes, enamels, lacquers, powder coatings, adhesives, sealants, printing inks, and advanced surface modification techniques including physical and chemical vapour deposition, electrochemical deposition, and sol-gel synthesis. The curriculum also covers polymer chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and chemical engineering fundamentals. The programme is highly practical, with lab work, in-plant training at companies like Asian Paints, Pidilite, and BASF, and a final-year project.

Ques. How competitive is the MHT CET cutoff for B.Tech Surface Coating Technology at ICT Mumbai?

Ans. With only 16 seats, this is one of the most competitive B.Tech programmes at ICT Mumbai. Based on MHT CET 2025 data, the cutoff percentile for the Open (General) category in Round 1 was approximately 98.27 percentile, and for OBC it was around 97.75 percentile. The TFWS (Tuition Fee Waiver Scheme) cutoff was around 97.39 percentile. Students from outside Maharashtra should also consider applying through JEE Main for the All India quota seats. Given the very limited seats, it is advisable to fill multiple preference options during CAP counselling.

Ques. What are the career and placement prospects after B.Tech Surface Coating Technology from ICT Mumbai?

Ans. Surface Coating Technology graduates from ICT Mumbai are among the best-placed in the institute. Core recruiters include Asian Paints, Pidilite, Berger Paints, Kansai Nerolac, Akzo Nobel, BASF, Dow, JSW, Tata Steel, and other leading paints, coatings, and specialty chemicals companies. The average package for Surface Coating graduates is approximately Rs. 8.5 to 9 LPA, with some students receiving packages of Rs. 13 LPA and above.
