ICT M.Tech Pharmaceutical Biotechnology FAQs
Ques. Is GATE score accepted for admission to M.Tech Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at ICT Mumbai, or is only GAT-B valid?
Ans. Admission to M.Tech Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at ICT Mumbai is based exclusively on GAT-B (Graduate Aptitude Test - Biotechnology) score, not GATE. This is because the programme is a DBT-supported course, and DBT mandates GAT-B as the qualifying exam for all its supported PG programmes. GATE scores are accepted for other M.Tech programmes at ICT Mumbai (such as M.Tech Chemical Engineering, Polymer Technology, etc.), but not for the three biotechnology programmes - Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Food Biotechnology, and Bioprocess Technology. Students must register for GAT-B separately through the NTA portal (https://exams.nta.nic.in/gat-bet/).
Ques. What is the seat distribution for M.Tech Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at ICT Mumbai, and does having a B.Pharm background give an advantage?
Ans. The total intake is 10 seats (DBT-sanctioned). Of these, 50% (5 seats) are reserved for candidates with a Pharmaceutical Sciences background, specifically B.Pharm (Sci.) or Pharmaceutical Technology graduates. The remaining 50% (5 seats) are open to candidates from other eligible branches such as Biotechnology, Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, etc. So yes, having a B.Pharm background does give a structural advantage as you compete in a smaller pool for the pharma-background seats. However, the merit list within each pool is based on GAT-B score.
Ques. What is the DBT stipend, and is it guaranteed for all students admitted to this programme?
Ans. All students admitted to this DBT-supported programme through GAT-B are eligible for a monthly stipend of Rs. 12,000 from the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. This stipend is disbursed through ICT Mumbai after verification of enrollment. Continuation of the stipend for the second year is subject to satisfactory academic progress, certified by ICT Mumbai. This stipend significantly reduces the financial burden, as it amounts to Rs. 2,88,000 over 2 years, which is more than double the total programme fee of Rs. 1,11,380.
Ques. What are the career prospects after completing M.Tech Pharmaceutical Biotechnology from ICT Mumbai?
Ans. Graduates of this programme are well-positioned for careers in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries, particularly in roles such as process development scientist, regulatory affairs specialist, quality assurance/control, biopharmaceutical production, and R&D. ICT Mumbai's strong industry connect with companies like Cipla, Sun Pharma, Lupin, Biocon, Piramal, and multinational pharma firms ensures good placement opportunities. Many graduates also pursue PhD programmes at premier institutes in India and abroad. The interdisciplinary nature of the programme (combining pharmacy, biotechnology, and engineering) makes graduates versatile and sought-after in the growing biologics and biosimilars sector in India.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for M.Tech Pharmaceutical Biotechnology students at ICT Mumbai?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at ICT Mumbai is not guaranteed and is allotted based on availability and merit. ICT Mumbai has four hostel blocks (2 boys' and 2 girls' hostels) on the main campus in Matunga, Mumbai. Allotment is done at the beginning of the academic year, and priority is given to outstation students. Based on the 2024-26 hostel allotment list, M.Tech Pharmaceutical Biotechnology students have been allotted rooms in Hostel 1 (boys) and Hostel 3 (girls). The mess advance is Rs. 36,000 per semester (prepaid food charges) plus a refundable deposit of Rs. 5,000. Students who do not get hostel accommodation need to arrange private accommodation near the campus in Matunga, Mumbai.
Ques. Can students from a pure science background (B.Sc. Biotechnology or B.Sc. Life Sciences) apply for M.Tech Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at ICT Mumbai?
Ans. No. ICT Mumbai's M.Tech Pharmaceutical Biotechnology programme requires a full 4-year degree (B.Tech/B.E./B.Pharm) from a UGC-recognized university. Candidates with a 3-year B.Sc. degree (including B.Sc. Biotechnology, B.Sc. Life Sciences, B.Sc. Microbiology, etc.) are not eligible for this programme. This is a common point of confusion, as many other institutions offering M.Sc. Biotechnology through GAT-B do accept B.Sc. graduates. At ICT Mumbai specifically, only 4-year degree holders in the specified disciplines are eligible. Students with a B.Sc. background who wish to pursue biotechnology at ICT Mumbai should look at the M.Sc. programmes at other GAT-B participating institutions.
