ICT M.Tech Surface Coating Technology FAQs

Ques. Is M.Tech Surface Coating Technology at ICT Mumbai a niche course? What are the job prospects?

Ans. M.Tech Surface Coating Technology is indeed a specialised programme, but it opens doors to a large and growing industry. The global paints and coatings market is one of the largest in the specialty chemicals sector, with major players like Asian Paints, Berger Paints, Pidilite, Kansai Nerolac, BASF, Dow, Evonik, Arkema, and AkzoNobel actively recruiting from ICT Mumbai. Graduates work in R&D for paint formulation, surface modification, corrosion protection, automotive coatings, industrial coatings, and specialty thin films. The programme also opens pathways to higher studies in materials science, polymer engineering, and surface chemistry at top universities in India and abroad.

Ques. Is M.Tech Surface Coating Technology available at all three ICT campuses?

Ans. No. The M.Tech in Surface Coating Technology is offered only at the ICT Mumbai (Main) campus at Matunga. It is not available at the ICT-IOC Bhubaneswar campus or the ICT Marathwada Jalna campus. Students interested in this programme must apply specifically for the Mumbai campus. The programme has 18 sanctioned seats at the Mumbai campus.

Ques. What GATE paper should I appear in for M.Tech Surface Coating Technology at ICT Mumbai?

Ans. The most relevant GATE papers for this programme are Chemical Engineering (CH) and Chemistry (CY). Candidates from surface coating, polymer, paints, or oils technology backgrounds typically use the CH paper. Non-GATE candidates are also considered for remaining seats after GATE-qualified candidates are accommodated. It is advisable to verify the accepted GATE papers in the official admission notice on the ICT website each year.

Ques. How are the internship and placement opportunities for M.Tech Surface Coating Technology students at ICT Mumbai?

Ans. Surface Coating Technology, along with Polymers, consistently records the highest placement rates among all technology branches at ICT Mumbai. Students get internship opportunities at leading companies including Pidilite, Asian Paints, BASF, Dow, Croda, Evonik, Arkema, and DRDO during their programme. For the BTech batch of 2022, the average package was 8.5 LPA. M.Tech students typically get placed in R&D, product development, and technical service roles. Many students also pursue higher studies (MS/PhD) at top universities in India and abroad, leveraging ICT's strong recommendation letters and alumni network.

Ques. What is the difference between M.Tech Surface Coating Technology and M.Tech Polymer Engineering and Technology at ICT Mumbai?

Ans. Both programmes are offered by the same Department of Polymer and Surface Engineering at ICT Mumbai. M.Tech Surface Coating Technology focuses specifically on paints, varnishes, lacquers, powder coatings, thin films, surface modification, corrosion protection, and coating application techniques. M.Tech Polymer Engineering and Technology has a broader scope covering polymer synthesis, processing, rheology, composites, and materials development. Surface Coating is more industry-specific (paints and coatings sector), while Polymer Engineering offers wider applicability across plastics, rubber, adhesives, and specialty materials. Both have strong placement records and similar fee structures.

Ques. Can a student from a Chemical Engineering background pursue M.Tech Surface Coating Technology at ICT Mumbai? Will there be a knowledge gap?

Ans. Yes, Chemical Engineering graduates are eligible for M.Tech Surface Coating Technology at ICT Mumbai. The eligibility criteria explicitly includes B.E./B.Tech. in Chemical Engineering. While there may be an initial knowledge gap in paint formulation, pigment chemistry, and coating application techniques, the curriculum is designed to bridge this gap through coursework in the first two semesters. Chemical engineering graduates bring strong fundamentals in thermodynamics, transport phenomena, and process engineering, which are highly relevant to coating manufacturing and scale-up. Students are advised to supplement their preparation with basic reading on polymer chemistry and surface science before joining.
