NMIMS B.Com FAQs

Ques. Is the NMIMS B.Com a 3-year or 4-year programme, and what is the difference?

Ans. The B.Com at NMIMS ASMSOC is offered as a 3-year or 4-year programme under NEP 2020 guidelines. After 3 years, students receive a B.Com degree. Those who wish to pursue the Honours degree must indicate their preference at the end of the 2nd year and complete the 4th year, which has a research and multi-disciplinary focus. The 4-year B.Com (Hons.) degree is more research-oriented and carries greater academic value for students planning to pursue higher studies.

Ques. Is the NPAT score the only criterion for B.Com admission at NMIMS, or does 10+2 performance also matter?

Ans. Both NPAT score and 10+2 academic performance are considered for the merit list. The merit list is prepared based on a combination of the NPAT score and 10+2 marks. Therefore, a strong 10+2 academic record alongside a good NPAT score significantly improves your chances of securing admission.

Ques. Can I attempt the NPAT more than once, and which score will be considered?

Ans. Yes, you can attempt the NPAT up to 3 times (1 main attempt + 2 retakes). The highest score among all your attempts will be considered for the merit list. However, once the main exam is delivered, you cannot add a new school in the same category for a retake. Rescheduling or cancellation of the exam is strictly not allowed.

Ques. What is the Bloomberg Terminal access at NMIMS ASMSOC, and how does it benefit B.Com students?

Ans. NMIMS ASMSOC provides students with access to a Bloomberg Terminal, which is a professional financial data and analytics platform used by investment banks, asset managers, and financial institutions globally. B.Com students use it for live and simulation-based trading exercises, financial data analysis, and understanding real-world market dynamics. This hands-on exposure is a significant differentiator for students pursuing careers in finance and investment.

Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for B.Com students at NMIMS Mumbai?

Ans. Hostel accommodation at the Mumbai campus is available but is not guaranteed and is allotted on a first-come, first-served basis. It is optional for Mumbai students. After paying the admission fee, students can apply online through the NMIMS Hostel Application Portal. Hostel fee does not include meal plan charges.

How do the new HR programs of IIM Ranchi, NMIMS, and XIMB measure up to the established ones of XLRI, TISS, MDI and SCMHRD?

Apoorv AshutoshFormer PhD Candidate at Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (2017–2020)

The simple answer to your question is no, the new HR programs of IIM Ranchi, NMIMS, or XIMB are not at par with the established ones XLRI, TISS, MDI, and SCMHRD. The established programs especially that of XLRI are the epitome of HR programs. They cannot be compared to the new ones at any given level or parameter.

  • Faculty: The professors of XLRI are renowned throughout the industry for their competency. They specialize in almost every domain one can think of be it Law, Competency Modeling, Compensation, or Performance Management.
  • Peers: It’s the cream students who get the opportunity to get into a prestigious college like XLRI. You can see tough competition between the finest students at college. Every individual has a valuable opinion and stands to contradict others. Their thinking pattern is broad and given a case study, they look at all angles from accounting to finance to laws while proposing the solution. The situation at TISS is also quite similar.

Now one can say that the curriculum can be replicated and learned faculty can be sought to match the quality of the HR program at these institutes. But the truth is faculty and curriculum are the main but not the only factors that determine an institute's worth. Its own culture, ethics, and background have a lot to do with the programs it offers.

So one cannot match XLRIs programs no matter how much they try.

Should I choose ECE in SRM OR NMIMS? Should I also consider an MBA Tech course?

Arnav GoswamiMBA BM, XLRI (2019)

Choosing among the two given institutes depends upon what you want to pursue in the future. The points below give a brief overview of the advantages of both the choices, based on which you can make a decision.

  • If you want to do an MBA after the B.Tech directly, without preparing for CAT, XAT, MAT, GMAT, NMAT, etc. prefer the MBA Tech course from NMIMS. Although the B.Tech degree from NMIMS is not that good, the MBA degree is quite valuable and offers decent opportunities.
  • If you want to do a separate B. Tech and then prepare for CAT, XAT, GMAT, etc for an MBA, then you should choose SRM over the other. In addition, the ECE department is one of the best departments in SRM University, which has an excellent faculty and offers good placements too.
  • If you are interested in doing MBA from some foreign university, get minimum work experience after graduation.

These are some of the most important things to consider that will help you make a choice among the institutes.
