LPU M.Tech VLSI Design Course Structure

Year 1 covers analog and digital VLSI, CMOS and mixed signal design. Year 2 adds electives, live projects and the dissertation. You practise on Cadence, TCAD and Xilinx tools in the labs.

YearWhat you study
Year 1Analog and digital VLSI, CMOS design and mixed signal design, with lab work
Year 2Electives, industry certifications, live projects and the dissertation

Should you pick M.Tech VLSI Design at LPU?

This course suits students with an electronics degree who want chip design or verification work and will build skills on lab tools.

Pick it if:
You want to learn on the tools chip firms use: the VLSI labs use Cadence, TCAD and Xilinx, so you practise design and verification on them.
You have a strong GATE score: a GATE percentile of 95 or more takes 60% off the programme fee, and you do not need LPUNEST.
You want the fee back fast: the last M.Tech median pay of INR 8.4 LPA is more than the full fee of INR 3.40 Lakhs.
You are from the North East, Sikkim or a defence or Kashmiri migrant family: you need 50% in your degree, not 55%.
Skip it if:
You want internships at chip firms during the term: the campus is in Punjab, far from Bengaluru and Hyderabad where most chip firms work.
You want placement data for VLSI alone: LPU gives one median pay for all M.Tech branches, so ask the department for VLSI offers before you pay.
You have a GATE percentile below 80: you get no GATE waiver, so your LPUNEST score decides your scholarship.
You want to keep a scholarship without effort: you keep it each year only if you meet the academic rule set at admission.
Counsellor's advice
If your GATE percentile is 90 or more, apply with GATE and claim the waiver. If not, take LPUNEST phase 1 early, because the score sets your scholarship.

In short
Chandigarh University ranks higher in NIRF engineering, but it offers an M.E. in ECE with an IC design focus, not a VLSI M.Tech. If you want a named VLSI degree and higher median pay, take LPU.
In short
Amity costs INR 36,000 less, but its M.Tech median pay is less than half of LPU's. If you can pay the extra fee, LPU gives the better return; pick Amity only if you must study in Noida.
In short
Sharda is the cheapest here, but its M.Tech median pay is about half of LPU's. If pay after the degree matters most, take LPU; take Sharda only if you must keep the fee low.
In short
Graphic Era charges INR 28,000 less in tuition and ranks just below LPU in NIRF engineering. If placement data matters to you, ask Graphic Era for its M.Tech figures before you choose it over LPU.

Fees and pay can change. Check each college site before you decide.

FAQs on LPU M.Tech VLSI Design

Straight answers to what students ask before they decide.

Is M.Tech VLSI Design at LPU worth the fee?▾
Yes, for most students who finish and get placed. The full fee without hostel is INR 3.40 Lakhs and the last M.Tech batch had a median pay of INR 8.4 LPA. So one year of median pay covers the full fee more than twice. If a loan pays the fee, check the EMI line in the fee block above before you decide.
What job will I get after this course?▾
Most VLSI graduates start as design, verification or physical design engineers, or in embedded roles. In 2023-24, 68 of 82 M.Tech graduates at LPU were placed at a median pay of INR 8.4 LPA. That figure covers all M.Tech branches, so build one project on Cadence or Xilinx to stand out for chip roles.
Should I take this course without a GATE score?▾
Yes, LPUNEST is enough for the seat. Your LPUNEST score only sets your scholarship, and 75 out of 90 is the tentative mark for Category I. If you can sit GATE too, do it, because a GATE percentile of 95 or more takes 60% off the programme fee.
Who should not take this course here?▾
Skip it if you need internships at chip firms during the term, or if you want placement data for VLSI alone. The campus is in Punjab, far from Bengaluru and Hyderabad where most chip firms work. LPU also gives one median pay for all M.Tech branches. If either matters most, ask the department for VLSI offers before you pay.
Is this course good for a PhD or research later?▾
Yes, if you plan for it early. The dissertation in year 2 and the Cadence and TCAD labs give you research work to show. In 2023-24 only 6 M.Tech graduates went for higher studies, so most students take jobs. Pick a dissertation guide in year 1 if you want a PhD.
Is VLSI Design better than M.Tech CSE at LPU for me?▾
Pick VLSI if you liked digital electronics and circuits in your B.Tech, and CSE if you want software work. VLSI roles need circuit and tool skills that CSE does not teach. The VLSI programme fee of INR 3.20 Lakhs is also lower than CSE's. Choose the branch your degree prepared you for.
Should I wait a year for a better GATE score?▾
Only if you are close to the 95 percentile mark. A GATE percentile of 95 or more takes 60% off the programme fee, against 40% for 90 to 94.99. That gap is 20% of the programme fee. If your percentile is under 90, join now, because a year of pay is worth more than the extra waiver.
Will I get a placement if my marks are low?▾
Most likely, but you must work for it. 83% of the last M.Tech batch at LPU was placed. The students left out are often the ones with no project and a weak CGPA. Keep your CGPA steady, finish one chip design project on the lab tools and apply to every chip firm that visits.
How do I get admission to M.Tech VLSI Design at LPU?▾
Fill the online form on the LPU site and pay the INR 1,000 form fee. Then take LPUNEST or give your GATE score, get the offer letter and pay the fee by the date on it. Report with your original mark sheets for the document check, or you lose the seat.
What is the full fee for the course?▾
The full 2-year fee is INR 3.40 Lakhs without hostel: INR 3.20 Lakhs tuition and INR 20,000 exam fee. With hostel and mess it comes to INR 5.26 Lakhs. Both totals sit in the fee block above, and the toggle there shows what the hostel adds.
Can I get a scholarship with my GATE score?▾
Yes, if your GATE percentile is 80 or more. A percentile of 95 and above takes 60% off the programme fee, 90 to 94.99 takes 40% and 80 to 89.99 takes 30%. You get only one of these. Use the scholarship calculator above to see your net fee.
Is the 55% rule relaxed for anyone?▾
Yes, by 5%. Students from the North East and Sikkim, and children of defence staff and Kashmiri migrants, need 50% in their degree. Everyone else needs 55%. Keep the certificate that proves your group ready for the document check.

Which is better for Computer Science LPU or Amity Gwalior?

SatnamB.Tech CSE student at LPU

I am currently pursuing B.Tech CSE at LPU. According to me, LPU is one of the best institutes for BTech in Computer Science because of its excellent academics, top placements, scholarship facility, and more.

LPU was ranked 50 by NIRF in 2023 for its Engineering courses. Other than that, LPU has attained the 3rd rank because of the coding expertise demonstrated by its students on the International Coding Platform- HackerEarth. More than 90 students of B.Tech Computer Science at LPU cleared the TCS National Qualifier Test (NQT). The highest package offered to B.Tech Computer Science students at LPU is around INR 64 LPA, and the average package is around INR 14.97 LPA.

I don’t know much about Amity Gwalior, but LPU is definitely a good choice for B.Tech Computer Science.

Which will be better for a BCA, IMS Ghaziabad or LPU?

NehaBCA student at LPU

I am a second year BCA student at LPU. I chose LPU over IMS Ghaziabad for BCA because of the following reasons:

  • LPU has received the highest A++ grade by NAAC.
  • LPU has a better placement record than IMS Ghaziabad. According to the LPU placement report 2023, 100% BCA batch got placed. The highest salary package offered to the LPU BCA students was INR 34.24 LPA during that year.

According to the IMS Ghaziabad placement report 2022, around 25% of students in the BCA program got placed, and the highest salary package offered to the BCA students was INR 10 LPA.

  • LPU offers BCA, BCA Hons, and BCA Big Data Analytics in a tie-up with IBM. This offers a great industrial exposure to students.
  • LPU offers scholarships to its students based on their percentage in the qualifying exam or LPUNEST or in the form of financial aid, and more.
  • LPU offers various skill development programs, professional training, and opportunities for industrial exposure to its students.

When a student chooses a university, they must consider factors such as academic environment, faculty, placement opportunities, ranking, industrial exposure, professional training, infrastructure, etc. So according to these factors, I can say BCA at LPU is better than IMS Ghaziabad.
