✓ Opt for this if

  • A GATE score at or above the 75th percentile is available and the monthly Fellowship of INR 12,400 plus a research grant can partially offset fees.
  • The target specialisation (E-Mobility, Sustainability Engineering, Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics, or HSE) is not available at comparably ranked private universities.
  • NIRF rank 43 in Engineering is acceptable and the Dehradun campus suits the preference for North India.

✗ Skip if

  • A strong GATE score qualifies for an NIT or a top-20 NIRF Engineering institution where the brand value is higher at a similar or lower fee.
  • The M.Tech goal is core CSE and VIT or SRM offers the same specialisation at a comparable fee with a stronger placement median.
  • No GATE or NET score is available and the research proposal requirement is a barrier.

UPES M.Tech FAQs

Ques. Is GATE mandatory for UPES M.Tech admission?

Ans. GATE is not mandatory. Candidates without GATE or NET can apply through CUET-PG and the internal Research Entrance Test. The 75th percentile threshold matters specifically for the GATE Fellowship. A score below that is still considered for admission but will not trigger the monthly Fellowship or research grant.

Ques. How does the UPES M.Tech research proposal work?

Ans. Every shortlisted candidate must submit a 1,000-word research proposal before the Personal Interview. The proposal outlines the research problem and approach within the chosen specialisation. GATE and NET holders are exempted from the internal Research Entrance Test but not from the proposal or the PI. The final merit rank combines entrance score and PI performance.

Ques. Which UPES M.Tech specialisation offers the best placement outcome?

Ans. AI and ML, Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics, and Data Science report the highest packages. Engineering specialisations (Petroleum, HSE, E-Mobility) place with Adani, ONGC, Siemens, and Boeing, typically in the INR 6 to 10 LPA band. Confirm current data with the UPES placement cell before selecting a specialisation based on salary alone.

Ques. What career path does a UPES M.Tech HSE graduate typically follow?

Ans. M.Tech HSE graduates enter the energy, petrochemical, construction, and aviation sectors as HSE managers, safety auditors, and process safety engineers. UPES has direct placement channels with ONGC, Oil India, Tata Power, and Adani. Government roles with PSUs (HPCL, BPCL, IOCL) and international postings in HSE consulting are also common outcomes within 2 to 3 years.

Ques. Is UPES M.Tech a better choice than an NIT for a moderate GATE score?

Ans. A moderate GATE score may not secure admission to a well-ranked NIT in a competitive specialisation. UPES at NIRF rank 43 is credible, especially for HSE, Petroleum Engineering, or E-Mobility where UPES has stronger industry ties. The Fellowship also reduces effective cost if the score crosses the 75th percentile. For core CSE and Electronics, NITs remain a stronger option at similar scores.
