Marshall University runs two main intakes for international applicants: Fall (August start) and Spring (January start), plus a smaller Summer intake. Fall is the primary intake for Indian applicants because most graduate assistantships are awarded for that cycle.
| Milestone | Date | Notes for Indian Applicants |
|---|---|---|
| Spring 2027 application deadline | 15 October 2026 | Submit application, English scores and financial proof by this date |
| Fall 2027 application deadline | 15 June 2027 | Recommended cycle for Indian applicants seeking assistantships |
| Summer 2027 application deadline | 15 March 2027 | Limited program availability; verify with department |
| Credential verification (WES) | Start 6-8 weeks before deadline | Marshall accepts WES for Indian degree evaluation |
| Programme start (Fall 2027) | Late August 2027 | New international student orientation runs the week before classes |
Planning note: Indian applicants should apply 8 weeks before the deadline because the F-1 visa slot booking window at Indian consulates has been tight through the 2026 summer season.

Marshall University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Marshall University applies the same academic minimums to Indian applicants as to other international students, with English proficiency being the single most-checked requirement.
- Postgraduate academic: Bachelor’s degree with CGPA 5.0/10 or 50% (per Marshall’s 2.00 GPA minimum for graduate admission)
- English proficiency (Graduate): TOEFL iBT 4.5 (1-6 scale) / 86 (0-120 legacy scale) for exams after 21 January 2026, or 80 for older exams; IELTS Academic 6.5; Duolingo English Test 105; PTE Academic 60
- Undergraduate academic: Class 12 with 50% or higher (per Marshall’s 2.00 GPA minimum)
- English proficiency (Undergraduate): TOEFL iBT 4.0 (1-6 scale) / 72 (0-120 legacy scale) for post-January 2026 exams, or 61 for older; IELTS 6.0; Duolingo 90; PTE 57; Cambridge English 169
- Credential verification: WES course-by-course evaluation of the Indian degree; foreign transcripts must arrive in sealed envelopes
Key insight: Marshall University’s IELTS waiver can apply if the Indian applicant completed a full English-medium bachelor’s from a recognised university; the letter must come on the university’s official letterhead and name English as the sole medium of instruction.
Marshall University Acceptance Rate 2027
Marshall University is an open-admission-style public with a very high acceptance rate. As per US News admissions data, the acceptance rate for the 2023-2024 cycle was 96% (estimated), placing Marshall among the more accessible US public research universities for Indian applicants.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2023-2024 | 96% (estimated) | Stable |
| 2022-2023 | 93% (estimated) | Stable |
The high acceptance rate does not mean admission is automatic. Indian applicants must still meet the English proficiency floor and submit a WES-evaluated transcript on time.
Reality check: A high acceptance rate helps Indian applicants with borderline GPAs but does not shortcut the F-1 visa interview, where the officer will still verify financial capacity and academic intent.

Marshall University Rankings 2027
Marshall University’s strongest ranking is its US News Best Colleges 2026 position, where it sits at #318 among National Universities. As per US News Best Colleges 2026, Marshall also ranks #170 among Top Public Schools in the United States.

[Source: US News, Collegedunia Study Abroad]
Marshall University is not currently placed in QS World or THE World editions, which is typical for regional US publics of its size. F-1 visa recognition is unaffected by these omissions because Marshall is fully SEVP-certified.
Key insight: For Indian applicants, the US News National Universities rank matters more than QS or THE, because US employers hiring OPT candidates read US News first and rarely reference the QS or THE tables.

Marshall University vs Peer Universities
The peers below are US public universities of similar tier that Indian applicants often shortlist alongside Marshall, compared on US News rank, tuition and one differentiator.
| University | US News Best Colleges 2026 | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD/₹ lakh) | One-line Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marshall University | #318 | $22,120 (₹21.11 lakh) | Lowest base non-resident tuition of the peer set; MBA and MPH strongest for Indian intake |
| West Virginia University | #187 (estimated) | $28,000 (₹26.73 lakh) (estimated) | State flagship with broader research funding and larger campus |
| Ohio University | #199 (estimated) | $21,500 (₹20.52 lakh) (estimated) | Strong journalism and business schools; larger international cohort |
| East Carolina University | #299 (estimated) | $21,700 (₹20.71 lakh) (estimated) | Stronger health sciences and dental medicine programmes |
Note: Marshall University stands out on total cost of study, with a base non-resident tuition typically 15 to 25% lower than the state flagship West Virginia University while maintaining comparable career support and SEVP standing.
Marshall University fits Indian students seeking an accredited US degree at a manageable $37,000 to $42,000 annual cost (₹35 to 40 lakh) alongside a $54,141 median mid-career salary. The John Marshall scholarship and graduate assistantship route make out-of-pocket cost realistic for merit-scoring applicants, and the universities in USA pathway supports 36 months of STEM OPT after graduation for engineering and computer science graduates.
It is not the right fit for applicants chasing Ivy-tier research prestige or a very large Indian student cohort on campus. That group should instead consider West Virginia University, the state flagship with broader research funding and a bigger student body.
Marshall University FAQs
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at Marshall University?
Ans. Yes, F-1 students at Marshall University can work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during the academic year and full-time during breaks. Off-campus work requires prior authorisation through Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT) after the first academic year. Most Indian students take on-campus roles at the library, dining halls or as graduate assistants.
Ques. Does Marshall University waive the GRE for Indian graduate applicants?
Ans. Several Marshall University graduate programmes have made the GRE optional or waived for the 2026-2027 cycle, including MBA, MS Cybersecurity and MEd. GRE is still required for MS Computer Science and most science research masters. Indian applicants should confirm with the target department, since GRE policies at Marshall University are set programme-by-programme rather than centrally.
Ques. What education loans partner with Marshall University for Indian students?
Ans. Marshall University is on the eligible-institution list for Indian public-sector lenders like SBI Global Ed-Vantage, Bank of Baroda and Canara Bank, as well as private lenders such as HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo and Prodigy Finance. Ques. How does Marshall University process WES credential verification for Indian applicants?
Ans. Marshall University requires a WES course-by-course evaluation for all Indian applicants applying with a foreign degree. Indian applicants should request WES to send the evaluation directly to the Office of International Admissions. Start the WES process 6 to 8 weeks before the application deadline, since Indian transcript verification from universities like Delhi University, Mumbai University and Anna University can take longer during peak season.
Ques. Which Indian banks are recognised for the F-1 financial proof at Marshall University?
Ans. Marshall University accepts bank statements from all scheduled Indian commercial banks for the I-20 financial affidavit, including SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis, Kotak and Bank of Baroda. This waiver applies to all Fall 2027 and Spring 2027 international applications and can be confirmed at the official international admissions page.
Ques. Does Marshall University offer conditional admission through its English Language Institute?
Ans. Yes, Marshall University offers conditional admission through the Marshall University English Language Institute for Indian applicants who do not meet the TOEFL or IELTS threshold. Wheeling, WV 26003 - For athletes we have our own athletic building with sports facilities, however for common students the facilities include a football turf, the recreation centre which has a gym, rock-climbing wall, basketball courts, squash courts, tennis courts, swimming pool, running track etc..
- There are more than a 150 clubs however, I don't know much about the festivals since I don't have time to take part in them being a student-athlete, but they keep have activities everyday of the week. For instance they had a pumpkin painting contest or live band concerts etc...
- When it comes to sports one option is to be part of the college sports team like I am or many people play sports recreationally at the rec centre, they also have quite a few football competitions and even cricket tournaments at my college, there are many student organisations some of them I've heard of are the fraternity and sororities, international student body, and most majors also have created their own student bodies for people interested. They also have a lot of cultural events for example for Diwali they celebrated by ordering Indian food and bursting crackers, they also do a lot of these international dinners where they serve food from countries around the world.

Overview
I chose Marshall because when I stepped foot on campus I knew I was home. I was interested in their Forensics program since it is such a fantastic program. Four years later and I still don't regret my decision.
Fees
We have meal plans that can be purchased and they offer FLEX and HERDPOINTS which can be used to pay for food on campus. The Rec center comes with tuition but if you want to take extra rec classes like self-defense or advanced yoga.
