Programs, Campus and Accommodation

Campus

  • The campus of the University of West Alabama is spread across 600 acres and also has a 54 acre lake for fishing.
  • It provides several opportunities for student involvement like student government association, campus activities, UWA Greek community, Band program Marching Tigers, fitness center, UWA cinema etc.
  • The institute also offers placement and health services along with late night transport, student patrols and campus security services.
  • At the campus, students can engage in sports like baseball, basketball, cross country, football, softball, tennis, volleyball etc.

Housing Facilities/Residence

  • Freshmen students are required to live on campus for at least their first academic year.
  • Additionally, on-campus residency is a condition to be satisfied for retaining some University scholarship too.
  • All freshmen students are housed together in the Gilbert Hall where 14 resident assistants are on duty to provide support and guidance to first year students while they adjust to college life.
  • The assignment of room depends upon the grade, better the score, better are the chances of choosing the residence halls after freshman year.
  • Residence hall rooms are furnished with a desk, chair, bed, closet space and dresser cabinet with drawers.
  • Common amenities in all housing options include television cable service, private bathrooms, study rooms, lounge area on each floor, living learning communities, community lounge with TV, Wi-Fi, central heating and air conditioning facility, laundry room and dining facility.

Courses

  • The institute offers a plethora of courses for international students which include more than 60 undergraduate and 20 graduate programs available through its 8 academic colleges and divisions at all the levels.
  • Programs are available in various disciplines that include business, education, liberal arts, nursing, natural sciences and mathematics.
  • Programs are offered both on campus as well as online through the different colleges and divisions of the University which include: College of Business and Technology, College of Education, College of Liberal Arts, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Division of Nursing and School of Graduate Studies.
  • All classes are conducted only by full-time professors maintaining a student-faculty ratio of 17:1 for undergraduates and 28:1 for graduates.
  • Some of the well-known majors offered by the university are - Biology/Biological Sciences, General; Kinesiology and Exercise Science; Physical Education Teaching and Coaching; and Communication and Media Studies.

Scholarships/Financial Aid

The university awards full range of grants, loans, part-time employment and scholarships for international students to study in the USA. About 80% of the students at the institute receive financial aid in some form.

The Financial Aid Center of the University helps students in tailoring a suitable financial aid package based on their family contribution. It requires students to fulfill all financial aid obligations at least 10 days before the term starts.

The Federal Work Study program allows students to work for 10-15 hours a week at the minimum wage rate. There are several departments mostly providing clerical job options for students.
