The University of California, Riverside is a public research campus in Riverside, California, and part of the ten-campus University of California system. It holds the #398 spot in the QS World University Rankings 2027, positioning UCR as an accessible UC route for Indian graduate applicants targeting STEM and business fields.

UCR runs on a quarter system across the Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering, the School of Business, and the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. All programmes are English-medium and admit international students through Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters. Indian applicants consistently pick MS Computer Engineering, MS Business Analytics, and the STEM-designated MBA among leading USA universities for OPT-friendly UC pathways.

  • QS World Ranking 2027: #398
  • Acceptance Rate: 76% (estimated)
  • Intakes: Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters
  • PG Tuition and Fees (non-resident): USD 37,341/year (INR 35.64 lakh)
  • Post-Study Work: 12 months OPT, extended to 36 months for STEM majors
  • Application Fee: USD 80 (INR 7,636) per programme

UCR remains test-optional across the University of California system for undergraduate applicants, and most graduate programmes have permanently waived the GRE. Non-resident supplemental tuition is fixed at the UC-wide rate for non-resident graduate students, and the F-1 visa route permits 12 months of OPT after graduation, extended to 36 months for STEM-designated majors. Indian applicants planning ahead can review the full MBA in USA pathway before applying.

University of California, Riverside Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Indian applicants clear UCR admission based on a numeric academic threshold plus a verified English test score. The undergraduate threshold is Class 12 with 85% aggregate, and most graduate programmes accept a three-year Indian bachelor’s for review.

Postgraduate requirements (Indian applicants):

  • Academic: Bachelor’s degree with 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 minimum; STEM masters expect 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 (recommended)
  • English test: TOEFL iBT 4.5 (1-6 scale, effective January 2026) or 80 (0-120 legacy scale); IELTS 6.5 overall; Duolingo 115
  • Credential verification: WES or ECE evaluation preferred; official transcripts uploaded during application
  • GRE: Waived across most programmes; MS Biochemistry and Molecular Biology still asks for GRE 300

Undergraduate requirements (Indian applicants):

  • Academic: Class 12 with 85% aggregate or GPA 3.4/4.0
  • English test: TOEFL iBT 4.5 (1-6 scale) or 80 (0-120 legacy scale); IELTS 6.5; Duolingo 115
  • Alternate English proof: AP English scores 3-5 or IB English scores 6-7 also accepted

UCR is test-optional for SAT and ACT for international undergraduates and does not reinstate testing across the UC system. Indian graduate applicants targeting MS in USA pathways should book their English test at least four months before the January fellowship deadline.

Key insight: UCR accepts a three-year Indian bachelor’s for admission to most masters programmes, unlike several US peers that insist on a four-year degree. Indian BSc, BCom, and BA graduates should still submit WES evaluation to confirm equivalency during document review.

University of California, Riverside Acceptance Rate 2027

UCR is one of the most accessible University of California campuses. The Fall 2025 first-year admission rate was 76% (estimated), placing UCR well above the systemwide UC average and giving Indian applicants a realistic UC entry point.

CycleAcceptance RateTrend
Fall 2025 (freshman)76% (estimated)Broadly stable
Fall 2024 (freshman)86% (estimated)Peak year
Fall 2023 (freshman)73% (estimated)Post-pandemic normalisation

Graduate acceptance rates vary sharply by programme, with taught masters in engineering and business more accessible than funded PhDs. International admission rates typically run higher than the systemwide rate because UCR actively recruits full-fee international students.

Reality check: A 76% freshman admission rate does not mean guaranteed entry for Indian applicants. UCR still requires the Class 12 85% or GPA 3.4/4.0 threshold, and English test minimums are non-negotiable regardless of academic strength.

University of California, Riverside Campus, Facilities and Student Life

UCR sits on a 1,900-acre campus in Riverside, California, 90 kilometres east of Los Angeles and 45 kilometres from Ontario International Airport. Undergraduate housing is guaranteed for first-year international students, and graduate housing sits in the on-campus Bannockburn and Falkirk communities.

  • Location and transport: Riverside Metrolink runs direct trains to Los Angeles Union Station in 90 minutes; free campus shuttle links residence halls to academic buildings and to the University Village retail centre
  • Housing: Guaranteed on-campus placement for first-year international undergraduates; graduate housing waitlist typically clears within one quarter
  • Notable facility: UCR’s Botanic Gardens covers 40 acres and hosts the Citrus Variety Collection, the largest such research collection in the United States
  • Indian community: Active Indian Students Association hosts Diwali, Holi, and Republic Day events; nearby temples in Riverside and Chino Hills serve the wider Southern California Indian diaspora

What Indian students say: Weather and safety are the two most-cited campus positives, with 300 sunny days a year and a compact campus that most students describe as walkable end-to-end in 15 minutes. The main frustration is grocery access, which almost always requires a Uber ride or a shuttle to Trader Joe’s.

University of California, Riverside Scholarships 2027

UCR confirms five named funding routes open to international applicants, split between undergraduate awards, PhD fellowships, and research grants. No award is India-only, but Indian applicants qualify for all merit and research-based routes on the same basis as other international students.

Subject-level strength lies in QS Agriculture and Forestry (#89 in 2025), ARWU Earth Sciences (#51-75 in 2025), and THE Life Sciences (#151-175 in 2026). US News also rates UCR #75 among National Universities and #36 among Top Public Schools in the 2026 edition.

Key insight: The #1 US social-mobility rank matters for Indian applicants because it flags UCR as an institution where students from non-elite feeder schools graduate at rates matching Ivy-league peers. It also unlocks a range of federally supported hiring pipelines for OPT graduates.

University of California, Riverside Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

UCR runs centralised career services through the Career Center for undergraduates and the School of Business Career Development Centre for MBA and MSBA cohorts. STEM masters graduates access the 36-month OPT window, which lengthens the effective US work runway to three years.

  • MBA median starting salary: USD 82,000 (INR 78.27 lakh) market median for AACSB-accredited West Coast MBAs; not officially disclosed by UCR
  • STEM MS OPT: 36-month post-completion work authorisation available for all engineering, computer science, and mathematics masters
  • Top hiring sectors: Technology, aerospace and defence, financial services, agri-tech, healthcare consulting
  • Representative employers: Amazon, Northrop Grumman, Deloitte, Kaiser Permanente, ESRI, Boeing, Wells Fargo
  • Careers support: Handshake platform, on-campus fairs each quarter, industry mentorship through the UCR Alumni Association

Insider note: Indian graduates report the strongest recruitment traction in Southern California technology and defence contractors, which lean on the UC system for engineering hires. The Riverside-Los Angeles-San Diego corridor offers proximity to over 200 tech employers within a two-hour drive.

UCR vs Peer Universities

Indian applicants weighing UCR typically compare against other UC campuses and West Coast public research universities. The table below benchmarks UCR against four peers on QS rank and annual PG fee.

UniversityQS Rank 2027Avg Annual PG Fee (USD)Avg Annual PG Fee (INR lakh)Differentiator
University of California, Riverside#39837,34135.64 lakh#1 US social mobility; lowest UC non-resident fee
University of California, Davis#13744,25442.24 lakhTop-ranked UC for agriculture and veterinary sciences
University of California, Irvine#25244,25442.24 lakhStrong health sciences and business analytics reputation
University of California, Santa Barbara#18244,25442.24 lakhSix Nobel laureates; strong engineering and physical sciences
Arizona State University#17332,38830.91 lakh#1 US Most Innovative University for a decade; larger STEM cohort

UCR stands out on two data-backed dimensions: it carries the lowest non-resident graduate fee across the University of California system, and it holds the US social-mobility top rank for ten consecutive years. Indian applicants trading a lower QS rank for a lower fee find UCR the best-value UC entry point.

The University of California, Riverside works best for Indian applicants who want a UC-system STEM masters or MBA at the lowest non-resident tuition available, with a total two-year investment of USD 59,502 to USD 110,000 (INR 56.79 lakh to INR 105.00 lakh) mapped against a median West Coast tech starting salary above USD 82,000. The 36-month STEM OPT window, combined with the campus’s Southern California employer network, delivers the strongest single Indian-specific advantage for those aiming at a US career runway.

UCR is not the right fit for applicants targeting a top-100 global QS rank, elite consulting recruitment, or a research PhD in cutting fields where UC Berkeley, UCLA, or UC San Diego dominate. Realistic alternatives at similar cost include UC Merced for research-heavy PhD entry and Arizona State University for a larger STEM cohort and broader industry pipeline.

Campus Life

  • UCR only has 1 campus, which is in Riverside, San Bernardino County.
  • 2 libraries are on campus, in addition to SSC, which is a place where students can go and study. Sports grounds are available and the UCR
  • The gym is also a great place to play team sports with your friends. It has 2 pools, 2 floors worth of gym area, tennis, basketball, badminton courts, etc.
  • The Spring Splash is a popular event but sadly, its only for undergrad students. We also have the Winter/Spring banquets for the Business School students.

Fees

  • The fees were $5000 for each course, each course was 4 units each and as an international student you have to take 12 units of courses per quarter. The fees were charged quarterly. And as per the scholarship norms, I would get $5000 minus the rest of courses so basically it was $10000 per quarter for me.
  • My monthly expenses were as follows:
    1. Rent: $1050
    2. Groceries and utilities: Upto $35 per week
    3. Mobile bill: $25 per month
    4. Transport: Up to $50 per month.
    5. Leisure expenses (movies/restaurants/etc.): up to $50 per month

Campus life is good, we have limited resources for the library, WIFI is there, in the same sports we have MBA SPORT, and yes the research facility is good.

Overview

Good school, a new environment and it had the major I wanted. I also wanted to choose a school far away from home so I know what it's like to handle independence.

Fees

The out of state tuition is obviously higher than the in-state tuition. Fortunately, I live in a state so the cost of going to UC Riverside is way less. Some students are granted financial aid and/or grants through FAFSA that lower the cost of their residency or tuition.

A master’s degree in the relevant field is required to apply for Ph.D admission at University of California Riverside. Before you submit your application, it is recommended to reach out to the faculty members whose research aligns with your interests. Express your enthusiasm for their work, ask questions about their research, and discuss your potential fit in their lab. The admission application portal, entry requirements, etc. are available on the university’s website.
