The campus of Amherst College is spread over 1,000 acres, which includes a wildlife sanctuary of about 500 acres. The students run over 100 clubs and organizations on campus. There are a total of 34 residence halls available for students, in which 98% of the student population lives on campus. Students can easily choose where they want to live. Students living on campus can always ask for assistance from the team of dean, area coordinators, and 62 students residence counselors, who are always available on campus.
If students decide to live on campus, they can be a part of ongoing events and activities that are run by the students themselves. And if they choose to live off-campus, they can opt for it in the housing application and can do so if the application is approved by the authorities. Living off-campus can be difficult for students, considering cost and availability.
Amherst College has 40 major programs for undergraduate students. Students can also choose more than one major and can also pursue their own interdisciplinary majors-although in such a situation, a formal proposal is to be submitted to the faculty member. Amherst offers a total of 850 programs and more than 6,000 courses through five college consortiums.
With the acceptance rate of 13%, 84% of classes have fewer students than 30. Also, there are 209 full-time instructional faculty in fields of study: arts, humanities, social science and natural science. Furthermore, the ratio of male and female students in this institution is 5:5.
