The flagship school in the Massachusetts system, University of Massachusetts, Amherst traces its roots back to as early as 1863 at the Massachusetts Agricultural College. In 1947, the institution was rechristened as the University of Massachusetts that gradually evolved to the present-day, nationally-ranked public research university.

University of Massachusetts Amherst Campus

The UMass Amherst campus is located in the small town of Amherst, in the scenic Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, 90 miles from Boston and 175 miles from New York City. Spread across almost 1,450-acres, the self-contained campus has a rural setting with easy access to major urban centers.

Student Housing Facilities at UMass Amherst

With 13,000+ students living in 52 residence halls, UMass boasts of one of the largest on-campus housing facilities in the USA. Accommodations include traditional residence halls, suites and apartments, in varying sizes, spread across campus in seven different residential groups. Each residential area is characterized by the cultural or academic living/learning programs housed within and are equipped with classrooms, cultural, recreational and social centers, kitchenettes, in addition to the bedrooms, study areas, laundries, and dining facilities.

Undergraduate housing cost per semester at UMass Amherst ranges from USD 2,676.50 to USD 6,556.50 while graduate housing cost per semester ranges from USD 4,841.50 to USD 6,015.50. Housing fees do not include a meal plan. All campus residents are required to subscribe to an on-campus meal plan though the residents of Apartment, Graduate, and Family Housing are exempted from this requirement.

Please note that the university guarantees housing for first-year students enrolled in a full-time program. New undergraduate students can apply for on-campus housing using UMass Amherst Student Portal – SPIRE once their admissions deposit is processed.

How to apply: For admissions to UMass Amherst, the application is an online process. While Undergraduate Application is through Common Application, Graduate Application is through Graduate School.

Application Deadline: The table below presents the undergraduate application deadlines for Fall and Spring. Please note that for the Spring intake, only undergraduate international students who are currently enrolled in a US-based school with a valid student visa are considered.

Graduate programs have varying application deadlines for Summer and Fall intakes, though October 1 is the deadline for all programs having a Spring intake. Select programs in Graduate School accept students only in Fall session.

Admission Requirements: The general admission requirements for UMass Amherst are:

  • Complete application for admission.
  • All official transcripts along with certified English translations if the original document is in any other language. Graduate applicants should have completed a US equivalent Bachelor’s degree. Please note that the 3-year Indian Bachelor of Arts, Science, and Commerce degrees are not considered to be equivalent.
  • Professional evaluation of all academic transcripts, including a course-by-course evaluation.
  • Standardized scores of exams to study in the USA. (SAT or ACT for undergraduate programs)
  • Official English Proficiency Test Scores. No application will be considered if submitted without such test scores. The acceptable tests and their scores at UMass are tabulated below:

  • Academic Letter of Recommendation.
  • Select undergraduate majors like Architecture, art, dance, and music require portfolio review or audition. Graduate Application may require additional documentation like test scores, personal statement, resume, recommendation letters, portfolio, audition, etc. depending on the program applied for.

International applicants also need to submit a financial statement to provide the proof of availability of resources to cover a year expenses at the university and copy of passport for visa purposes and a mandatory health insurance to the USA.

Please note that the university costs are mandatory heads that students have to bear. The variable costs will vary from student to student and also includes estimates of room and board expenses incurred during the school break.

Scholarship and Financial Aids

International students are not eligible for financial aid. However, enrolled UMass international students can apply for scholarships by completing the General Application in the UMass Amherst Scholarship System. Based on this General Application as well as their profile, such students may be considered for scholarships. Listed here are few scholarships for which international students are considered:

  • Barbara B. Burn Memorial Scholarship award of USD 1,000 for sophomore, junior, or senior Bachelor’s degree international student at UMass having a minimum CGPA of 3.75.
  • A non-renewable merit-based scholarship awarded by StorageArea.com to Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, and Graduate Students who are enrolled in a full-time program. The award amount is USD 1,000 and the online application is available on their website.
  • Davinci Body Sculpting Women in STEM Scholarship is a non-renewable need/ merit-based scholarship for a full-time female student majoring or having a general interest in STEM. The award amount is USD 2,500. Students can apply online through their website.
  • Other External Scholarships: International students can apply for various external international scholarships to study in the USA that are awarded by various private agencies and organizations or even the respective home country government.

Work While You Study

The Federal Work-Study (FWS) program is a need-based award that considers eligible students for hourly-wage jobs, paid at the rate of minimum hourly federal wage. However, since international students do not qualify for federal aid, employment options for them outside the FWS program are highly restricted.

Nevertheless, F1 students may seek on-campus employment and work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and 40 hours per week during Intersession and Spring Break. Graduate students at UMass Amherst can seek employment as teaching assistants, research assistants, or interns through their respective academic departments.
