University of Massachusetts Amherst vs Peer Universities
The peer set below groups UMass Amherst with two US public flagships in comparable QS bands and one cross-country alternative frequently considered by Indian STEM applicants.
| University | QS 2027 Rank | Collegedunia Study Abroad Rank | Avg PG Tuition (USD/year) | Avg PG Tuition (INR lakh/year) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Massachusetts Amherst | #260 | #125 | 41,639 | 39.93 lakh | Strong Food Science, Linguistics, Isenberg employer network |

| Northeastern University | #284 | NA | 29,880 | 28.65 lakh | Co-op programme with 3,600 employer partners |
UMass Amherst stands out on Isenberg’s US News-ranked business school reach and the Manning College’s research-heavy MS Computer Science curriculum. The out-of-state tuition sits mid-band against peers, and merit assistantships are the primary lever Indian students use to bring total cost below the sticker figure.
University of Massachusetts Amherst suits Indian students targeting Boston-corridor employers, STEM OPT-eligible MS tracks, and specialist strength in Food Science, Linguistics, or Business Analytics. The USD 60,000 to 62,000 annual budget is offset by a USD 79,000 median starting salary, giving a competitive ROI when funded through assistantships or the F-1 visa STEM OPT extension.
It is less suitable for applicants seeking an urban campus, an Ivy-adjacent brand premium, or an MBA under USD 100,000 all-in. Purdue University or the University of Illinois Chicago carry lower total costs with comparable STEM outcomes.
University of Massachusetts Amherst FAQs
Ques. Does UMass Amherst offer January intake for MS Computer Science?
Ans. Yes, UMass Amherst runs a Spring intake starting January for a limited set of MS programmes including MS Computer Science and MS Electrical & Computer Engineering. The application deadline for Spring 2027 entry is 01 October 2026. Programme selection is narrower than Fall, and assistantship funding is scarce, so Indian applicants usually target the September start.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at UMass Amherst?
Ans. Yes, F-1 international students can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during regular semesters and 40 hours per week during official breaks. Off-campus work requires prior authorisation through Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training. Common on-campus roles include dining services, library assistant, research assistant, and teaching assistant positions.
Ques. Is GRE required for MS admission at UMass Amherst in 2027?
Ans. GRE is optional for most MS programmes at UMass Amherst, including MS Computer Science, MS Business Analytics, and Communication. A small number of PhD tracks and departments such as Economics still consider GRE scores. Submitting a strong GRE (Quant 160+) can strengthen borderline applications and improve assistantship visibility for Indian applicants.
Ques. What is the application fee for UMass Amherst graduate programmes?
Ans. The graduate application fee at UMass Amherst is USD 85 per programme (approximately INR 8,150). The fee is non-refundable and payable by credit card at submission. Ans. UMass Amherst is recognised by all major Indian public and private banks for education loans, including SBI, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, and Bank of Baroda. Ques. Are three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees accepted at UMass Amherst?
Ans. Yes, UMass Amherst accepts three-year bachelor’s degrees from UGC-recognised Indian universities for graduate admission. Applicants with a three-year BA, BCom, or BSc are eligible provided the CGPA meets the departmental minimum. A WES course-by-course evaluation is strongly recommended to convert the degree onto the US four-year GPA scale for admission committees.

- What I like most are the variety of courses offered to me, it gives me a lot of freedom to choose what I want to study. The campus is also quite pretty and a generally nice place to be.
Dislikes
- What I don't like though is that it's very rural so there isn't much around to do, which is annoying since I come from a city.
Campus Life
- There's a ton of clubs on campus so I don't think you should get too bored. As for the research facilities, that depends on the department, but the college of computer science has a lot of programs to help students get into it. There's 2 libraries, a big regular one for general stuff and a smaller one for stem topics.
Fees
- Roughly 60k USD per year, with around 40,000 being tuition and the other 20k being housing, food, insurance, etc. Out-of-state and international students can get an 18k scholarship, though if they have good grades, not sure what the threshold for the grades being considered good are, though.

- Good peaceful environmental with more greenery.
- Nice faculty from various top universities.
- Well equipped with all machines and equipment’s related to course.
Dislikes
- Located in suburban so some times it might feel difficult to get things done.
- More options for facilities than students like parkings, offers, etc
- Parkings for students is bit more expensive than normal parking.
Campus Life
- The university has six campuses: Amherst, Boston, Dartmouth, Lowell, Worcester and Dartmouth.
- We have all facilities like a library, sports and medical services also.
- There are many events that will be played every week. Like music events, party nights, festivals, etc.
- There are organisations which keep these events happening. Most of the students will join in this organisation and help the university to arrange these events successfully.
Fees
- The tuition fee is $2500 (depending on the credits and subjects you took). Hostel with meal plan will be around $15000.
- It’s based on credit. Credits may vary depending on the subject and courses you choose.
- Transport is free for college students. Even during holidays, it is also free. Rent for 2 beds and 1 bath will be $2100 (depending on the community), and groceries will be around $500-800$ per month.

Dislikes
- Honestly there isn't much to dislike about UMass. For my entire two years of Masters I felt blessed to be a part of this prestigious institute. However I will still try to give some pointers which might not be the strong suite
- UMass, Amherst is located in small town of Amherst, Massachusetts. The town is fairly small and might not feel happening to some students. In winter the town gets extremely cold with snow falls and harsh weather conditions which might make it difficult for new comers to settle in
- On campus accommodation prices are quite high and availability is quite low.

- It was the best university for Computer Science out of the ones I got accepted into and it was a very appealing campus. Additionally, its proximity to Boston, the education hub was also a deciding factor.
- I love the campus and the teachers. Being recognised for its food has also been a plus point of my time here. I think I like almost everything about this college!
Dislikes
- I think everything I have come across till now, I have really liked in my University. However, if I had to think about it, I love walking but for people who might not, the campus is quite huge. Not everyone likes walking, rather running to classes so if you are not one to "go on a walk" when you have to attend a class, make sure your schedule does not make you run around different areas of campus like mine did in the first semester of freshman year!
Overview
I think I have, up until now had a very good experience in my university. As an international student too, I never had any sort of issues in the university. I think my overall experience has been very positive, and I would definitely recommend this university to other students who are looking for an affordable yet good college to go to!
Campus Life
The campus is huge and the infrastructure is commendable. Being a public university helps get federal funds which ensures the maintenance of the campus infrastructure. We have a lot of extracurricular activities too! The gym includes activity areas for various sports, such as basketball, badminton, table tennis, and squash, as well as activities such as boxing, pilates, spin classes, etc. The campus offers numerous opportunities for a student to thrive.

- I needed a global PMP certificate to stay updated in the industry, not specific to only India market.
- Curriculum, separate individual certifications within this major certification, syllabus vastness, faculty interactions, combination of live and recorded sessions, conducting live proctored tests, interactive & impromptu project creation & submissions.
Dislikes
- The limitations of Placement program could have been elaborated well in advance. It would be beneficial for university to provide more detailed information about placement rates, alumni success stories, and resources for job searching to help students feel more confident about their post-certifications plans. It can be little bit frustrating not knowing what opportunities are available after getting the certificate or how to access them. Without proper guidance or transparency from the career services department, students may feel uncertain about their future prospects. If college doesn't have strong connections with companies or provide resources for networking and job hunting, students may struggle to find employment in their field of study.
Overview
As this was my very first global university academic experience, I enjoyed most of it. The curriculum, separate individual certifications within this major certification, syllabus vastness, faculty interactions, a combination of live and recorded sessions, conducting live proctored tests, interactive & impromptu project creation & submissions, overall, it was a roller coaster ride.
Campus Life
It was more of an online program; however, as UMASS Alumni, we were invited to attend all the campus programs and events whenever we visited the University. Yet to visit Massachusetts.

- One of the key aspects for me was the scholarship along with the great brand name of the institution. The compsci & compeng. programs were also one of the best in the country with regards to public universities.
- The courses available in the engineering department are really diverse and they allow students to branch out to different fields in technology. The faculty is also very knowledgeable and lab facilities are of high caliber
Dislikes
- The location is really isolated and is inaccessible especially for international students. It takes a minimum of 2 hours to reach campus from the nearest airport which is in Boston. Being a vegetarian, the food options in the canteen are also limited.
Overview
My overall college experience could be defined as challenging, only because I feel very estranged from home and find it difficult to live in a rural environment. Notwithstanding that, it is a great place to learn and build your future.
Campus Life
There are more than 600 clubs to choose from. They range from sports, fine arts, debate, art, academics, adventure sports and much more. The Du Bois library is the largest student library at 28 floors. WIFI is available all around campus. There is a recreational turf as well as a recreational gym Centre along with basketball and badminton courts.

- One of the top universities for data science. They offer data science specialization along with master's.
Overview
UMass Amherst is a good university with a lot of resources and facilities that can aid students to help their studies. Faculties are pretty good except for some who don't know how to teach. There are plenty of research opportunities. Careers team is really good. But the location of campus limits the number of career fairs we can attend. There is housing crunch in Amherst.
Campus Life
Campus life is good, infrastructure is good. There are a lot of resources on campus that can help us study. There are a lot of organizations and clubs for your interests. Wi-Fi is not very good. Libraries are really good.

- It has a really good data analytics program. And the professors are very knowledgeable here as well.
- Good peer group, amazing professors, it is located in an amazing place and there good ambience as well. I have an amazing friend group and we are all encouraging and supporting each other at all times.
Dislikes
- I don’t have anything to dislike as of much but one thing I can say is that it is pretty secluded as the university is located in a remote town called Amherst, it would have been nice if the university was in a city or if I had joined a university in a city
Overview
It was a much needed experience especially after staying in India which like my comfort zone, I finally realised the value of hard work and struggle.
Campus Life
It has everything on campus WiFi, huge sports facilities, a gym and lots of research facilities as well.
Overview
This university is one of the good universities for Masters in Data Science. It is also close to where my spouse works.
