All INR figures use the mid-market rate of 1 USD = INR 95.42.

Fee Saving Strategies for Indian Students at University of South Carolina, Columbia

The single most urgent lever for the Fall 2027 intake is the Early Action deadline of 15 October 2026, because USC awards merit scholarships to the fullest tier for early applicants and reduces award sizes for the Regular Decision pool.

  • Apply Early Action for Fall 2027 by 15 October 2026 to maximise your merit scholarship band; a mid-range award of $8,000 (INR 7.63 Lakhs) per year is more likely at EA than at Regular Decision
  • Live off-campus with a roommate from Semester 2 onward; a 2BR share in the Devine Street or Rosewood area runs $500 to $700 per person, saving INR 1.5 to INR 2.5 Lakhs per year versus on-campus housing
  • Take a 15 to 18 credit-hour load under the UG block rate to compress a 4-year degree into 3.5 years, saving one semester of housing and living (INR 12 to INR 14 Lakhs)
  • Work on-campus up to 20 hours per week as permitted by F-1 status, at $10 to $15 per hour, offsetting roughly INR 6 to INR 9 Lakhs of living cost per academic year
  • Claim Section 80E deduction on the full interest paid on your Indian education loan for the entire course plus 7 years, cutting your effective interest rate by 3 to 4%
  • Plan for OPT and STEM OPT: F-1 students get 12 months of post-study work (Optional Practical Training), and STEM degrees get an additional 24-month extension, giving 3 years total to earn back the loan before repayment pressure builds in India

Read what current international students say about the USC Columbia experience in the USC Columbia Student Reviews.

USC Columbia sits in the affordable-mid-tier US public band: budget INR 63.70 Lakhs for a UG Year 1 and INR 54.62 Lakhs for a standard Master’s Year 1, before any scholarship. A mid-range automatic USC merit award of $8,000 per year plus an Indian external such as Inlaks or JN Tata can drop your cash outflow by INR 15 to INR 20 Lakhs over a Master’s. For the next step, lock in the Fall 2027 Early Action window by 15 October 2026 to secure the highest merit tier before the Regular Decision pool competes for the remaining awards. My experience, especially as a recent transfer student to my institution, has been swell. I personally enjoy the city and feel happier walking around campus because of its location. It provides a better sense of community and a lot more activities for people. There are also many opportunities for research that I think are great for students.
