Michigan State University offers 30+ scholarships and funded assistantships, of which 15+ are accessible to Indian applicants. Merit awards for undergraduates range from $3,000 to $15,000 per year, renewable for four years. Graduate candidates at Michigan State University access tuition waivers plus stipends through teaching or research assistantships.

  • Standard international undergraduate tuition sits near $43,000 per year (INR 41.04 Lakhs).
  • A Provost’s Scholarship trims that to about $31,000 per year (INR 29.59 Lakhs) net.
  • Combining MSU merit with the Inlaks Shivdasani Award can cover full tuition and living costs.
  • Next UG scholarship deadline: November 1, 2026 for Fall 2027 intake (early action).

Currency Note: All INR conversions in this article use the live rate of 1 USD = INR 95.45 as of August 2026. A "credit waiver" at Michigan State University means tuition is covered for a set number of course credits per semester, not a discount on the sticker price.

Michigan State University Scholarships for UG Students

The MSU Non-Resident Scholarship is Michigan State University’s core undergraduate merit programme for international applicants. There is no separate scholarship application. Your admission file is reviewed automatically after you meet the November 1 early action deadline.

Scholarship Amount per Year Duration Eligibility
President’s Scholarship $15,000 (INR 14.32 Lakhs) 4 years / 8 semesters Top academic band; strong GPA and course rigour
Provost’s Scholarship $12,000 (INR 11.45 Lakhs) 4 years / 8 semesters High academic profile
Dean’s Scholarship $10,000 (INR 9.55 Lakhs) 4 years / 8 semesters Above-average academics; competitive coursework
1855 Scholarship $7,000 (INR 6.68 Lakhs) 4 years / 8 semesters Solid academic record
Beaumont Tower Scholarship $5,000 (INR 4.77 Lakhs) 4 years / 8 semesters Consistent academic performance
Global Community Scholars Scholarship $3,000 (INR 2.86 Lakhs) 4 years / 8 semesters Base international student award
Presidential Study Abroad Award $3,000 to $5,000 (INR 2.86 to 4.77 Lakhs) One-time Enrolled UG within first 8 semesters; approved study-abroad programme

The four-year value of a President’s Scholarship reaches $60,000 (INR 57.27 Lakhs), which offsets more than half of typical out-of-state tuition across the degree. Awards renew automatically if you remain full-time in good academic standing. Apply through the Common Application or MSU’s own portal by November 1, 2026 for Fall 2027 entry. Admission and scholarship decisions arrive by January 15, 2027. Later applications still qualify for scholarship review, though awards shrink once early rounds close.

Michigan State University Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students

Master’s students at Michigan State University rarely receive named merit scholarships. Funding at the graduate level runs through assistantships: teaching, research, or programme roles that combine a stipend, tuition waiver and health insurance.

  • Teaching Assistantship (TA): grade papers, run recitations, lead labs; typical duty for Master’s students in Humanities and Sciences.
  • Research Assistantship (RA): faculty-grant-funded project work; the most common route for STEM Master’s and PhD candidates.
  • Graduate Assistantship (GA): administrative or programme-based work in a college office or centre.
Funding Route Value Duration Eligibility How to Apply
Half-time Graduate Assistantship Tuition waiver (9 credits fall, 9 spring, 5 summer) plus $22,000 to $32,000 (INR 21 to 30.54 Lakhs) yearly stipend plus health plan Semester-by-semester, renewable across the programme Strong academic record; department screening; English-proficiency clearance for teaching roles Contact department; some auto-considered with the admission file
Quarter-time Graduate Assistantship Tuition waiver on 4 to 5 credits; partial stipend; medical plan Semester-based, renewable Recommended for lighter research loads Departmental nomination
Lillian Kumata Scholarship Up to $2,500 per semester (INR 2.39 Lakhs); roughly $5,000 (INR 4.77 Lakhs) yearly Fall and spring semesters Enrolled international student; partial-need basis Apply through the Office for International Students and Scholars
Whittier Endowed International Health Scholarship Variable, project-based One-time per approved rotation Master’s or PhD in Human Medicine or Osteopathic Medicine; project involves international-health research College-specific application
Professorial Assistantship ~$4,000 per year (INR 3.82 Lakhs) for 8 to 10 hours weekly 4 semesters Honors College invitees; auto-reviewed for international candidates Automatic on Honors invitation

An assistantship pays out roughly $2,000 to $2,800 monthly (INR 1.91 to 2.67 Lakhs) during the academic year. Rents in East Lansing average $700 to $1,000 monthly for a shared apartment. That leaves a genuine surplus after essentials.

Reddit Insight: Indian applicants report that funded MS offers cluster in research-heavy departments like Engineering, Statistics, Neuroscience and the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Course-based MBA and Supply Chain Master’s programmes rarely fund international students in the first semester. Budget for a self-funded first term and pursue an RA from term two.

India-Specific Scholarships at Michigan State University

Michigan State University does not run a country-specific award named for India. Indian applicants pair MSU’s merit funding with the four external India-only routes below.

Scholarship Amount / Coverage Duration Eligibility Deadline
Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship Fully funded: tuition, J-1 visa support, round-trip economy airfare, monthly living stipend, insurance 1 or 2 years Indian citizen; minimum 55% Bachelor’s marks; 3 years relevant work experience; fields limited to 8 disciplines including Public Health, Urban Planning, Journalism, Economics Tentative May 14, 2027 (annual cycle) for 2028-29 batch
Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowship J-1 visa, monthly stipend, insurance, economy airfare, incidental allowances 6 to 9 months Indian citizen registered for PhD in India by Nov 1, 2025; thesis submission at least 3 months after fellowship ends July 1, 2026 for 2027-28 batch
Inlaks Shivdasani Scholarship Up to $120,000 (INR 114.54 Lakhs): tuition, one-way airfare, living, health, visa Up to 2 years for Master’s Indian passport holder residing in India; under 30 for most fields; secured admission at approved universities including MSU Tentative March 31, 2027 (annual cycle) for 2027-28 intake
JN Tata Endowment Loan Scholarship Interest-free loan up to INR 10 Lakhs; gift portion up to INR 1 Lakh for top scorers Repayable over 7 years post-graduation Indian citizen; secured MS or PhD admission abroad; first-class Bachelor’s or Master’s Rolling; tentative March 25, 2027 for 2027 cycle

The Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship is the marquee India-only route with total coverage. Many awardees graduate debt-free. The catch is the eight-discipline gate: if your target Master’s sits outside that list, such as MSU’s Supply Chain MS, Fulbright-Nehru will not fund it. Inlaks works differently. You apply after securing an unconditional MSU offer, so timing runs late in the cycle. The upside is broad field coverage, though competition is fierce, with roughly 25 to 30 Inlaks scholars selected across all subjects and destinations each year.

JN Tata is technically an interest-free loan, not a grant. It doubles as a signal of merit that strengthens your MSU financial aid file. Awardees also compete for a smaller gift component from the endowment fund.

Michigan State University PhD Scholarships

PhD students at Michigan State University receive the most complete funding on campus. Doctoral candidates in most departments enter with a five-year package covering tuition, stipend and health cover.

Award Stipend and Coverage Duration Eligibility Application
University Distinguished Fellowship ~$32,500 (INR 31.02 Lakhs) 12-month stipend, full tuition, fees, health insurance 5 years; year 1 and year 5 fully funded by Graduate School with no teaching or research duties Top doctoral admits; nominated by college and department; strong academics, research goals and leadership Nomination-based; no direct application
University Enrichment Fellowship ~$32,500 (INR 31.02 Lakhs) stipend, full tuition, fees, health cover 5 years; identical funding pattern Doctoral admits with academic strength plus record of overcoming obstacles or contributing to a diverse research community College nomination
Doctoral Graduate Research Assistantship $22,000 to $32,000 (INR 21 to 30.54 Lakhs) yearly stipend, tuition waiver, medical plan Renewable each year through the programme Match with a funded principal investigator; strong research fit Direct outreach to faculty; some offered with the admission letter
Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Full tuition plus $20,000 (INR 19.09 Lakhs) yearly stipend for the academic-year fellowship; summer version smaller 1 academic year, renewable Doctoral or Master’s students studying a modern foreign language via African, Asian or Latin American centres Centre-specific application; typically January to February

The University Distinguished Fellowship is the strongest doctoral prize on offer. Recipients skip teaching duties in their first and final years, freeing up roughly 24 months for pure research. That structural benefit matters more than the stipend for candidates writing time-heavy dissertations. Most Indian PhD applicants secure a Graduate Research Assistantship rather than a fellowship. The RA route ties funding to your advisor’s grant, so cultivate email contact with two or three professors whose work overlaps yours before applying.

External Government Scholarships for Michigan State University

Beyond MSU-run awards and India-only routes, four external programmes provide stackable funding for Indian applicants heading to Michigan State University.

Scholarship Coverage Duration Eligibility Deadline
Fulbright Foreign Student Program (via USIEF) Tuition, monthly stipend, health insurance, round-trip airfare 1 or 2 years for Master’s Non-US citizen; strong academic record; leadership potential; commitment to return home Tentative May 14, 2027 for 2028-29 batch
AAUW International Fellowship $20,000 Master’s (INR 19.09 Lakhs); $25,000 Doctorate (INR 23.86 Lakhs); $50,000 (INR 47.73 Lakhs) postdoctoral 1 academic year, renewable in some categories Women who are non-US citizens or permanent residents; strong academics; STEM preferred Tentative November 15, 2026 for 2027-28 cycle
Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Full tuition, stipend, professional development, airfare, insurance 10 months, non-degree mid-career 5 years of full-time professional experience; Bachelor’s degree; leadership record in public service Tentative May 14, 2027 for 2028-29 batch via USIEF
Cochran Fellowship (USDA) Short-term training funding, travel, stipend 2 to 12 weeks Mid-career agricultural professionals from India; nominated by the USDA embassy in New Delhi Rolling nominations; tentative Q1 2027 cycle

Reddit Insight: Indian PhD candidates in agricultural sciences and food systems consistently rate the Cochran Fellowship highly. It is an underused entry point into MSU’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Short-term visits often convert into full RA offers because faculty meet you before you apply.

The AAUW International Fellowship pairs cleanly with a Graduate Assistantship. Indian women applicants sit at a strong statistical position, especially in STEM tracks, given AAUW’s non-US-citizen preference. Combined, AAUW plus a half-time RA covers the full sticker price at Michigan State University for many first-year Master’s students.

FAQs

Ques. What is the maximum funding an Indian student can stack at Michigan State University?

Ans. An Indian PhD candidate on the University Distinguished Fellowship gets roughly $32,500 (INR 31.02 Lakhs) stipend plus full tuition and health cover for five years. An MS candidate can layer Inlaks up to $120,000 (INR 114.54 Lakhs) with a Graduate Assistantship tuition waiver, reaching near-total cost coverage. UG students combine the $15,000 (INR 14.32 Lakhs) President’s Scholarship with an external private grant to trim about half the sticker fee.

Ques. When should Indian applicants apply to hit every Michigan State University scholarship deadline?

Ans. Apply for UG admission by November 1, 2026 to secure consideration for all merit scholarships for Fall 2027. Master’s applicants should submit by their department’s priority deadline, usually December 15 to January 15, so assistantship review starts early. For India-specific external funding, file Inlaks by March 31 and Fulbright-Nehru by May 14 in the year before your intake.

Ques. Do I need a separate scholarship application at Michigan State University?

Ans. No. UG merit scholarships are auto-considered from your admission file, so a single application covers both. Graduate assistantships need a separate step: contact departments and named faculty before or immediately after applying. External awards like Inlaks and Fulbright-Nehru have their own application portals with independent deadlines.

Ques. What GPA do Indian applicants need for the President’s Scholarship at Michigan State University?

Ans. MSU does not publish a fixed cutoff. Historical patterns place President’s Scholarship recipients at a Class 12 percentage of 90% and above, roughly 3.8 or higher on a 4.0 scale, with rigorous coursework. Dean’s and Beaumont Tower awards typically pull from the 80% to 90% band. Standardised test scores strengthen the file though MSU is test-optional.

Ques. How does the Michigan State University Provost’s Scholarship compare to the Global Community Scholars award?

Ans. The Provost’s Scholarship pays $12,000 (INR 11.45 Lakhs) per year for four years, totalling $48,000 (INR 45.82 Lakhs). The Global Community Scholars award pays $3,000 (INR 2.86 Lakhs) per year, totalling $12,000 (INR 11.45 Lakhs) over the degree. Both renew annually on continued full-time enrolment. Provost’s targets top academic profiles; Global Community Scholars is the baseline international-student award.

Ques. Do Michigan State University scholarships cover living costs in East Lansing?

Ans. Merit scholarships alone do not. Rent in East Lansing runs $700 to $1,000 monthly for shared housing plus roughly $400 monthly for groceries. A President’s Scholarship covers only tuition partially. Assistantship stipends of $22,000 to $32,000 (INR 21 to 30.54 Lakhs) yearly do fund living costs after tax, and Fulbright-Nehru plus Inlaks explicitly include a living stipend.

  • You have a website called apartments.com which apparently shows all the off campus housing in that area, even university also helps us to find off campus accomodation like Club, Village and Landings are the places where most off campus students live. You need to apply with your i20 and stuff. Also you need to have a guarantor, if you dont you need to pay 2 months rent as deposite which would be around $1000.

Yes I had to submit SoP, three LoRs and CV. After that one round of interview with 3-4 professors Yes I did have one round of interview before I got an admit. They basically just wanted to check the fluency and how well you can speak in English I knew the prof I wanted to work with and the field in what I was interested in working It’s been great. There are so many resources available for helping you in any regards. People are very nice and helpful. College campus is very much safe and feels like home.

Scholarship

There are no scholarships associated with this program no matter how good the profile is. However, we will receive a $1000 fellowship in the Fall semester (last semester as it is a 12-month program that starts in Spring).

I'm not sure if I'm the best person to answer this question because I haven't really gotten complete college experience from MSU. That's because I'm enrolled with the 12 month program which is very fast-paced and barely leaves us time to enjoy and take part in other stuff on campus. But if I am to comment on my program and the experience that I am right now having it is very hectic and mentally challenging. The weather in Michigan also makes it physically challenging in the first four months of the program. Personally I'm loving this because I wanted to challenge myself when I came out of India and I'm getting what I wanted.

I knew that I wanted to go to a college in-state and an MSU was the leading college in business that really caught my eye. It was the perfect distance away from my house which was about an hour and that was great because I could easily get home if I needed to but I wasn't so close that my parents could come up any day or that I felt that I'd be going home too often. On top of that when I visited the campus it was amazing I really loved how everything was so tied in together and so large at the same time. I really felt at home and I really solidified that when I got there. I can go running or for a walk anywhere on campus and it feels like I?m just outside enjoying nature there?s a bunch of trees alongside a bunch of beautiful buildings.
