Colorado School of Mines Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Mines admission requirements centre on academic transcripts translated to the Indian scale, a verified English test score and, for most graduate programmes, GRE. Full checklists sit in the Admissions silo.

PG applicants:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognised Indian university, with an overall CGPA of 6.5/10 or 65% (recommended); 4-year Indian degrees are preferred.
  • English test minimum: TOEFL iBT 4 (1-6 scale) / 79 (0-120 legacy scale), IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, DET 105, or PTE 51.
  • Credential evaluation by a NACES or AICE member such as WES; course-by-course evaluation costs USD 150 to 200.
  • GRE required for most programmes; scores valid 5 years; institution code 4073.

UG applicants:

  • Class 12 with overall marks equivalent to 50 to 59% Second Class or above on the Indian grading scale (HSC, ISC, state boards, CBSE all accepted).
  • English test minimum: TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0), DET 105 or Cambridge B2 with 176.
  • SAT and ACT are not required for international first-year applicants unless applying to play NCAA sport.

Key insight: TOEFL iBT began reporting on the new 1-6 band scale on 21 January 2026, and reports through 2028 will carry both the new and legacy scores; Indian applicants should send Mines the full score report so admissions staff see both scales without extra follow-up.

Colorado School of Mines Acceptance Rate 2027

Mines does not publish an official cycle-level admit rate, but session-derived estimates for the 2026 cycle place the undergraduate acceptance rate at 60 to 63% (estimated). The figure has trended upward from an older cited rate of about 40%, reflecting enrolment growth alongside sustained applicant volume.

For graduate programmes, Mines does not publish a single admit rate; PG selectivity varies sharply by department, with Petroleum, CS and Mining considered the most competitive.

Reality check: The 60% headline hides significant variation for Indian applicants; competitive engineering programmes like CS and Petroleum typically expect a CGPA well above the 6.5 minimum and a verified GRE score, while lower-volume disciplines admit closer to the headline rate.

Colorado School of Mines Campus, Facilities and Student Life

Mines campus is a compact 373-acre site in the mountain town of Golden, Colorado, about 25 km west of downtown Denver at the base of the Front Range.

  • Location and transport: Regular RTD light-rail and bus service connect Golden to Denver International Airport in roughly 1 hour; the Front Range trailheads sit within a 30-minute drive.
  • Housing: First-year students are guaranteed on-campus housing at USD 900 to 1,600 per month equivalent; most graduate and upper-year students live off-campus in Golden or Lakewood.
  • Notable facilities: Marquez Hall for Petroleum Engineering, the Edgar Experimental Mine (a working teaching mine), and the CoorsTek Center for Applied Science and Engineering anchor Mines’ applied research profile.
  • Indian student community: The Indian Student Association and the Society of Petroleum Engineers student chapter run active social and professional programming; total international enrolment sits at about 11% of the student body.

What Indian students say: The engineering-only focus means peers are almost all STEM students, which speeds up group study but narrows social variety; Golden itself is quiet compared to a Denver or Boulder posting, and most weekend activity revolves around campus events or Rocky Mountain trips.

Colorado School of Mines Scholarships 2027

Mines stands out for its #1 global position in Mining and its concentrated STEM footprint; among Colorado peers, CU Boulder wins on breadth and Colorado State on scale, but neither carries a subject rank on par with Mines. For Indian applicants shortlisting by subject strength rather than headline world rank, Mines is a rare fit.

Key insight: Choose Mines over CU Boulder or Colorado State if the target career sits in energy, mining, geology or applied materials; choose the broader peers if the discipline sits closer to life sciences, general CS or business analytics.

Colorado School of Mines fits Indian students committed to STEM depth in mining, petroleum, geology, materials or engineering-adjacent CS, with a total annual investment of about USD 71,470 (INR 68.01 lakh) against a median starting salary of USD 76,400 (INR 72.70 lakh). The single strongest USA advantage is the 3-year OPT window granted through STEM designation.

It is not the pick for applicants seeking business, humanities, arts or medical training, since the campus is almost entirely engineering and applied science. Those chasing a top-100 QS world rank inside Colorado will find the University of Colorado Boulder a stronger fit on breadth and headline ranking.

Colorado School of Mines FAQs

Ques. What is the application fee at Colorado School of Mines for Indian applicants?

Ans. Colorado School of Mines charges a graduate application fee of USD 95 (about INR 9,040), non-refundable, payable online through the Mines graduate portal. Undergraduate international applicants apply through the Mines application, which also carries a similar fee. Payment is by international credit or debit card; the application will not be reviewed until the fee clears. Fee waivers are rare and are typically restricted to select US-based programmes.

Ques. Can GRE be waived for Indian applicants to Mines graduate programmes?

Ans. GRE is required for most Colorado School of Mines master’s and PhD programmes, and waivers are handled at the department level rather than centrally. A small number of professional master’s tracks in Computer Science and Data Science may waive GRE for applicants with strong undergraduate CGPA above 8.0/10 or significant work experience. Indian applicants should email the target academic department before applying to confirm whether a waiver is possible for the specific programme and cycle.

Ques. How many hours per week can F-1 students work on the Mines campus during term?

Ans. F-1 visa holders at Colorado School of Mines can work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during the academic term and full-time (40 hours per week) during official breaks and summer. Off-campus work is not permitted in the first academic year; Curricular Practical Training becomes available in the second year for eligible programmes. Common on-campus roles include research assistantships, teaching assistantships and library or dining hall positions arranged through the Mines Career Center.

Ques. Does Colorado School of Mines offer conditional admission for Indian applicants without English test scores?

Ans. Colorado School of Mines does not offer conditional admission tied to future English test completion at either the undergraduate or graduate level. Applicants must submit a valid TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, DET or Cambridge English score by the application deadline for the cycle they are targeting. There is no in-house pre-sessional English programme. Indian applicants whose Class 12 or bachelor’s medium of instruction was English should still send a test score, since Mines rarely accepts medium-of-instruction letters in place of test results.

Ques. What documents does WES require for a Colorado School of Mines credential evaluation?

Ans. For a WES course-by-course evaluation used by Colorado School of Mines, Indian applicants must submit sealed transcripts and mark sheets from every university attended, degree certificates or provisional certificates, and a completed WES request form. WES sends the evaluation directly to Mines. Turnaround is typically 4 to 6 weeks from receipt of all documents; Indian applicants should start the WES process at least 8 weeks before the Mines application deadline to avoid missing the cycle.

Ques. Are three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees accepted for graduate admission at Mines?

Ans. Colorado School of Mines evaluates three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees on a case-by-case basis and does not accept them by default for graduate admission. Applicants with a three-year BSc or BA are typically asked to complete a recognised postgraduate qualification such as a one-year Indian master’s or postgraduate diploma before applying. A four-year BE, BTech or BS from a recognised Indian university meets the standard entry requirement without conditions.

Ques. Which Indian education loan lenders recognise Colorado School of Mines for financing?

Ans. Colorado School of Mines is recognised by all major Indian public and private sector lenders offering study-abroad education loans, including State Bank of India, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Bank of Baroda and non-bank lenders like Avanse, InCred and Prodigy Finance. The Mines I-20 document, issued after admission, is accepted as visa proof by these lenders. Loan sanction usually needs an admission letter, I-20 and cost of attendance from the Mines financial aid page.

Ques. What is the OPT work authorisation duration for Mines STEM graduates?

Ans. All Colorado School of Mines engineering, applied science and computing degrees carry STEM designation, which grants graduates the standard 12 months of Optional Practical Training plus a 24-month STEM extension, totalling up to 3 years of US work authorisation post-graduation. Indian graduates use this window to secure H-1B sponsorship or transition to green card pathways. STEM OPT requires the employer to enrol in E-Verify and complete a formal training plan on Form I-983.

Overview

I was living in Florida and got a mailer from school. My family was in the process of moving to Colorado so I looked at Mines and the other large Colorado schools and really fell in love with the small size and feel of the campus. Everyone is friendly, and the coursework is rigorous. Many companies know Mines by name and seek out interns that are from our school which has been awesome in finding job opportunities!

Fees

We are a state school so tuition is around 20 thousand in the state or 40 thousand out of state not including room and board. I have student loans through Granite State Management and my parents have Parent Plus Loans. I also get the Colorado Opportunity Fund which is around 300 dollars per class I take.
