It is very affordable in terms of tuition fees as well as living expenses. As Master Student studying Computer Science per semester your fees would be around 10k and living expenses per month would be around 450. If you are coming for Data Science or any other major that falls under College of Engineering you would easily get scholarship and your tuition fees would be halved.
It is relatively easier to get an on-campus job. There are loads of opportunities available for international students. There are fair amount of assistantships as well which could be achieved with a bit more research and networking.
The options in terms of subject selection are also vast and you could also see subjects that would be offered till next three semesters which makes planning selection a lot more easier.

Dislikes

There are too many international students enrolled for courses like Computer Science, Data Science etc which is not that great to be honest.
Although there are career fairs organized by the university, they are very rare, maybe 1 or 2 per semester so it gets a bit difficult to find a job.
The location being Houston is not great for Technological students since there are very less companies due to which the advantage of local hiring is pretty much nonexistent.

I found out about it through seniors via LinkedIn, who helped me with it. Monthly rent is around 350 for a 2b2b shared accommodation which most students prefer. It includes Central AC, Refrigerator, Oven and Dishwasher. Finding like minded roommates was the most difficult part.
I think students similar to me should reach out to seniors to know about specific details, however joining what’s app groups would provide sufficient details. There are two main housing options where Indians live 1. Camps Life : University of Houston!

It has a great atmosphere. There is diversity due to students coming from many different countries
Faculty are always engaged in research with the students. You get to meet your faculty more often compared to any Indian University.
Simple course structure. The courses are very simple and easy to handle, there is not much load about that

Dislikes

Medical insurance fees. You have to pay twice in a year, and that is damn expensive compared to the services you will be getting.
The security of the campus lapses sometimes. There have been many incidents of theft and robbery, where students' valuable items get stolen by the miscreants. It is a major problem, so need to be careful.
The university is a bit outskirts of the city. So it takes a bit of time to travel by bus to the university.

Monthly rent was around 650$ for a 2b2b including utilities and excluding electricity. It's an unfurnished apartment, you have a fridge and microwave in the kitchen.
It was not a very big challenge, I already had friends here before who helped me in getting an apartment.
I will say to join any online group for future accommodation, you will get someone who is looking for the same thing.
My apartment is around 9 miles far from campus. Most of the indian students including me stay close to the texas medical center area.

My dream University of Houston- My masters Experience

There are many peaceful and suitable places across the campus for study-work.
The professors are very interactive and helpful, and the education at the college is wrathful.
The management is beneficial, and there are many giveaways around the campus.

Dislikes

The weather is so humid and hot.
Most of the people are Indians (good point) but it also leads to less diversity.
There are fewer options for food on campus, and some of the classes have very odd timings.

Career Fairs - My University helped me to connect with professional people and expanded my network with UH alumni.
Infrastructure - UH has space or room for everything related to studies, recreational activities, sports, cultural activities, coaching, laboratories, dining, transportation, etc which helped me to balance work-life.
Resources - UH Library is one of the biggest library in Houston with huge volume of books and systems to do research which helped me to do academic projects.

Dislikes

Time Management: I did not like the time it takes to process documents related to CPT / I-20.
Shuttle Facilities: I wish there is free shuttle provided for students staying in the nearby community though we have paid metro.
On Campus Jobs: Competition for on-campus job is high so getting a part-time job immediately after joining is a concern.

Good old whatsapp group formed by our seniors helped us all find accommodation. We found roommates first and then we got on a call to look for apartments. All the facilities were looked for and the month rent did not exceed 400USD per month. Wifi and electricity not included. Electricity is around 200USD per month and Wifi is around 50USD per month. The challenge while securing the apartment was that no one told us that we had to get the electricity plan and insurance before getting the apartment. Lease application getting approved isnt a promise that you will get the apartment. You need to have these thigns in place before you get the keys. Look for accommodation close to the bus routes rather than the university. Bus routes will decide how easy your life is going to be in cities like Houston. Most of the indian students stay near the NRG stadium and that is the right thing to do if you have limited money to spend in the early years.

The reason why I got rejected from the colleges listed above is probably because I was trying to change streams when I applied for design and these colleges were offering more competitive courses that suited well for people who were already in the field or had some relevant experience. UW has a very focused HCI program, RISD is a hard-core design school. Both of these schools probably weren't suited for a novice designer like me.
University of Houston offered me room to grow and discover myself as a designer as opposed to accept me as one. It was also a very good research-oriented approach to design which is more empathetic towards those who want to enter the design world.
The admission process was very simple, first step of which is to apply online with all the required material (portfolio, GRE score, TOEFL score, recommendation letters, application fees and forms). Next was the most difficult interview that I ever had. They went through my portfolio in front of me through the call. They accepted me thereafter and then the regular process of applying to any other US college followed that involved the VISA process and paying the fees. There were no challenges as such except for the whole COVID backlash. Highlight was the interview because as nerve wracking it was, it was also something that gave me enough confidence that I can do it. GRE was just a formality, portfolio was the deciding factor. No minimum scores required.
I applied for the FALL 2021 intake. I wanted to change disciplines and with COVID receding it was the right time to make the move. The admission (right from filling out the required forms and fees in the month of December) to getting an acceptance (March), it was a three month long process. I took the GRE and TOEFL in September, prepared my supplementary material by the end of December and applied then. Gave interviews in the month of February and then got acceptances in March. After which i began the VISA process.

There are several options for on-campus housing, which can be found on the UH website, and off campus, you have Med Center Apts. , Scotland Apts. , Stratford Apts. among the few that are most taken especially among Indians. The rents start at a minimum of 650$ to 700$ for any kind of accommodation, but that may change depending on how many people will stay with you and how you split the bill. I would suggest contacting someone who lives in one of those apartments to know the cost deduction better

The Master of Science architecture degree here had the sustainable architecture line, and that was something I was really looking forward to learning and leaning towards as an architect. It was fun and a great experience. Got to meet a lot of new people and was able to find help easily whenever I needed it. And loved the hangout spots.

Divirsified University with Lot of things to see and learn

This University has a great program and the fee is moderate. Also the location's weather is similar to my own country.
Diversity. People from different cultures, countries and there is always something going on on the campus everyday. Great opportunities for networking, gaining knowledge.

Dislikes

Not many but I stayed around 5Miles from University, sometimes you could not find proper transportation. Little expensive to live in the University dorms.

I had a shared room which helped me to reduce the expenses. We had all the appliances installed. Average rentals will be around $600/month including groceries if shared.

It is a great experience. In my first semester, I been in a leadership program other than my own courses and next two semester, I have been in few clubs which helped me to socialize, build networks and finnaly made my experience unique compared to lot of other students.
