Florida International University admissions run on a two-intake cycle for Indian applicants, with a first degree at a 3.0 GPA (around 65%) plus IELTS 6.5 opening most graduate seats, and Class XII at roughly 75% plus IELTS 6.5 opening the undergraduate path.

  • Next live deadline: Fall 2027 graduate applications close 15 February 2027; first-year Early Action closes 2 November 2026.
  • The application fee is USD 30 (INR 2,863).
  • Basic eligibility (recommended): UG needs Class XII with around 75% in the required subjects; PG needs a four-year bachelor’s with a 3.0 GPA and IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 4.5 iBT, or Duolingo 110.
  • Acceptance rate: Around 55% overall; roughly 64% for international applicants in recent cycles.

Popular Miami-bound choices for Indian students include the MS in Cybersecurity, MS in Computer Science, International MBA, and MS in Computer Engineering, all of which are STEM-designated for the 36-month OPT window. Recent Indian graduates rate Florida International University highly for tech-industry links in South Florida, though several note that admission timelines move fast once departmental reviews begin.

Admission Status: Open. The primary intake is Fall (August). Graduate applications for Fall 2027 close on 15 February 2027, and first-year Early Action closes on 2 November 2026. The application fee is USD 30 (INR 2,863).

FIU Application Deadlines and Intakes

FIU operates two main intakes each year for Indian students: Fall in August and Spring in January.

  • The Fall intake is the primary window since it opens the widest set of graduate and undergraduate programs.
  • Graduate deadlines are set by the Office of International Admissions, while first-year deadlines run through the Common Application.

Florida International University’s primary intake for Indian students is Fall (August) — most programs open here.

Florida International University Eligibility

Eligibility at FIU sets a common academic floor across most graduate programs and a Class XII threshold for first-year applicants. Indian applicants must also demonstrate English proficiency because India is not on FIU’s list of 66 exempt English-speaking countries. Academic thresholds are held to institution-wide minimums; individual programs can require higher marks.

  • UG general entry (recommended): Class XII at around 75% from a recognised Indian board, with subjects matching the intended major (Mathematics for engineering, science subjects for nursing).
  • PG general entry: Four-year bachelor’s degree with 3.0 GPA in upper-division coursework, which maps to around 65% in the Indian percentage system.
  • English proficiency: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 4.5 iBT, or Duolingo 110

FIU PG Programs and English Scores

FIU’s popular graduate programs for Indian students sit largely in computing, engineering, business, and architecture. For a fuller cost picture, see the course-wise programs page. Every program below is STEM-designated unless the discipline is business or architecture, giving Indian graduates up to 36 months of OPT eligibility after completion.

Programme Duration Minimum Eligibility
MS in Cybersecurity 2 years Bachelor’s with 3.0 GPA in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
MS in Computer Science 2 years Bachelor’s with 3.0 GPA in CS or related quantitative field
MS in Information Technology 2 years Bachelor’s with 3.0 GPA in IT, CS, or engineering
MS in Computer Engineering 2 years Bachelor’s with 3.0 GPA in Computer or Electrical Engineering
MS in Information Systems 2 years Bachelor’s with 3.0 GPA in any field; foundation courses may be required

FIU UG Admissions for Indian Students

Undergraduate applicants from India apply through the Common Application for a four-year bachelor’s programme. FIU accepts SAT, ACT, or CLT scores as the standardised test component, and evaluates Class XII marks alongside subject coverage.

Programme Duration Minimum Eligibility (recommended)
BS in Computer Science 4 years Class XII with 75%+ including Mathematics through Class XII
BBA in Business Administration 4 years Class XII with 75%+ from a recognised board
BS in Cybersecurity 4 years Class XII with 75%+ including Mathematics
BS in Nursing 4 years Class XII with 80%+ in Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics

First-year admission is not test-optional at FIU; SAT or ACT is required. Score submissions use FIU’s ETS code 5206. Beginning with the 2025 to 2026 application, FIU no longer uses the science section on ACT composite calculations.

FIU Application Process Step by Step

The FIU application flow differs by level. First-year applicants use the Common Application; graduate applicants use FIU’s own online portal, MyFIU. The steps below cover the standard graduate route, which is the more common Indian-applicant path.

  1. Create an account on the MyFIU application portal and select your programme and Fall 2027 intake.
  2. Pay the application fee of USD 30 (INR 2,863) on the MyFIU application portal.
  3. Upload transcripts, statement of intent, resume, and recommender contact details.
  4. Order a NACES course-by-course evaluation for your Indian bachelor’s transcript (WES, ECE, or IERF).
  5. Send official TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo scores using ETS code 5206 where applicable.
  6. Submit any program-specific items such as GRE scores, portfolio, or writing sample.
  7. Track application status on MyFIU; decisions typically come 4 to 8 weeks after all documents arrive.

FIU Admission Decisions and Deferral

Decisions arrive by email with a formal offer letter uploaded to MyFIU. Offers are typically conditional on final transcripts and English score verification. Admitted students receive a link to submit Declaration of Certification of Finances (DCF) and passport bio-page before the university issues the I-20 for the F-1 visa. Deferral requests are reviewed case-by-case and normally granted for one term.

Florida International University Documents Required

Documents are submitted directly through MyFIU or Common App. Send test scores from the testing agency, not scanned copies. Missing documents are the single most common reason for a delayed decision.

  • Passport bio-page: Valid for at least six months past intended stay.
  • Official transcripts: Class X, Class XII, and every semester of the bachelor’s degree, in sealed envelopes from the issuing institution.
  • Course-by-course evaluation: NACES-approved (WES, ECE, IERF) for all foreign post-secondary coursework.
  • English test score report: Sent to FIU code 5206 by the testing agency.
  • Statement of intent: One to two pages outlining academic and career goals.
  • Resume or CV: Including internships, publications, and any work experience.
  • Recommendation letters: Typically two to three from academic or professional referees.
  • Standardised test scores: SAT or ACT for UG; GRE or GMAT where the programme requires it.
  • Financial documentation: Bank statements or affidavit of support to meet the DCF for I-20 issuance.
  • Portfolio or writing sample: For Architecture, MFA, and select humanities programmes.

FIU Acceptance Rate for Indian Students

FIU is an access-oriented public research university, meaning it admits most applicants who meet its stated requirements. The overall acceptance rate sits at around 55%, and the international sub-cohort has trended closer to 64% in recent cycles. Selectivity rises for competitive graduate programmes in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, and the International MBA.

Which FIU Programmes Are Most Competitive?

Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Nursing (BSN), and the International MBA see the strongest applicant pools among Indian students. For these, the departmental cut-off often runs 5 to 10 percentage points above the 3.0 GPA floor. Architecture admissions weigh the portfolio heavily rather than the GPA alone.

How FIU’s Position Compares

FIU’s institutional profile places it in a solid mid-tier US research band, with its ranking band across QS World, THE World, and US News putting it near BITS Pilani among Indian comparators. This makes it a realistic Reach-to-Target school for well-prepared Indian applicants.

Reality check: A 55% overall acceptance rate does not mean 55% for every programme. STEM-designated masters in Computing routinely reject applicants at or just above the 3.0 GPA floor because the departmental pool is deeper.

Florida International University keeps its admissions bar accessible to strong Indian applicants while filtering hard at the departmental level for STEM master's and the International MBA. Fall 2027 is the intake to target now: order NACES evaluations first, book the English test second, and submit the graduate application well ahead of 15 February 2027 to keep the I-20 timeline safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. Does Florida International University accept IELTS from Indian students?

Ans. Yes. FIU accepts IELTS 6.5 as the institution-wide minimum, alongside TOEFL 80 iBT and Duolingo 110. Some programmes, such as competitive Computing master's programmes, raise the TOEFL floor to 92 iBT.

Ques. Is the Florida International University application fee refundable?

Ans. No. The USD 30 (INR 2,863) application fee is non-refundable regardless of the admission outcome, and it applies to both first-year and graduate applicants.

Ques. Do I need GRE or GMAT for Florida International University graduate programmes?

Ans. It varies by programme. Most STEM masters ask for the GRE, business programmes accept the GRE or GMAT, and many humanities and education programmes waive both. Check the departmental requirements page.

Ques. Can I waive the English test if I studied in English-medium schools in India?

Ans. No. FIU’s English test waiver is country-based, and India is not on the exempt list. Indian applicants must submit a TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo score unless their full bachelor’s degree was earned in an exempt English-speaking country.

Ques. What GPA does Florida International University require for master’s programmes?

Ans. A minimum 3.0 GPA in upper-division undergraduate coursework, which maps to around 65% in the Indian percentage system. Doctoral programmes typically ask for 3.2 to 3.3 GPA.

Overview

My parents have also studied here and I feel like I have a connection to this place. Also, I would love to access the great opportunities and experiences from such a prestigious school. I've heard a lot about their standards and ethics and it really pulled my attention. It’s really going to be a memorable one I met a lot of interesting people from different culture and ethnicity, different race and also different people with different identity such as LGBT and I got to understand things from their perspective also, and I feel challenged everyday to learn more because it’s a competitive school with a lot of smart kids.

Overview

Local and close to my house, I didn't want to go out of state so I chose to go to this university because I knew I would be homesick especially going to school for 4 years would have destroyed me so I decided to just go to school locally.

Scholarship

Financial aid, all I really needed to do was to go on the FAFSA website and do what I needed to do and from there, there was no problem ever in my 4 years at the university. I didn't have any scholarships or any loans out during my time at the university.
